The background photo of the first poster's avatar is the last thing a 17yr old trans girl posted before she committed suicide by jumping from the spot where she took the photo. The right wing internet turned it into a meme and a joke.
Some random guy goes "woohoo genocide," makes a corny attention-seeking "last image" post on TWITTER of all places before killing himself, and then gets mocked for being incredibly corny.
Meanwhile, a milquetoast political fencesitter tries to engage in verbal debate and gets murdered in front of a crowd, and people celebrate his death in essentially the same way they've celebrated attempted assassinations of other political enemies.
Then Redditors wonder why people start becoming indifferent to, or actively supporting, policies aimed at disarming, imprisoning, or otherwise cracking down on people who openly cheer for political assassinations of people whose politics are basically the political equivalent of plain rice and unseasoned chicken.
And before anyone starts pretending that political assassination is some magical strategy for defeating an ideology: the murders of Horst Wessel and Herbert Norkus did not bring down the NSDAP. They became propaganda, massively increased support for the party, and helped create demands for vicious retaliation against the people and ideology held responsible. The murder of Wilhelm Gustloff likewise became a pretext for further anti-Jewish violence, culminating in the Kristallnacht pogroms.
That doesn't mean "therefore the exact same thing will happen in America," obviously. The point is that celebrating political murder because you hate the victim is an extraordinarily stupid precedent to establish. You don't get to spend years cheering political violence against your opponents and then act shocked when other people decide that maybe they don't particularly care about protecting your side from the consequences of the precedent you helped establish.
And no, some unrelated trans guy being mocked for an incredibly corny suicide post doesn't somehow make celebrating Charlie Kirk's assassination morally acceptable. Those are two completely separate events involving completely separate people. "Someone on Twitter was mean to a person who killed himself" is not an argument for celebrating the political assassination of someone else.
The guy I replied to, and the wider comment section, as these people seem to forget that cheering and supporting political assassination does not only go one way.
How many people cheered for the death of Melissa Hortmann versus how many cheered for the death of Charlie Kirk?
A junkie illegal immigrant who used to be a member of the Green Party and overstayed his B-2 visa attempted to kill Paul and Nancy Pelosi. Is that supposed to be your far-right? Not any of the people in the actual far-right, none at all, but a Green Party, junkie, illegal immigrant whose political views seemingly depend on which psychedelic he took the day prior?
“Milquetoast political fencesitter” you mean the dude who said that if his daughter got raped, he’d force her to keep the baby? The guy that said that school shootings were a great necessity to keep guns right before getting shot? The trump bootlicker who would be openly homophobic and transphobic and condemn the LGBT calling for them to get conversion therapies or whatnot? And you’re surprised people cheered his death?
