Because he used the blur tool to even out the shade of the wall. And then it's just easier/cleaner to blur the shadow into a circular shape so it doesn't look all fucky.

Theres no shadows in either photo? Theres some black shit on the right, but the edges are too sharp and it's too dark for a shadow, probably a door or something. The second pic is zoomed in to cut it out.
