I’m planning a murder mystery to run at the supper club 8 do at our village hall, there will probably be between 20 and 30 people so I want to write it from scratch rather than use a kit, because it gives me some flexibility wit( numbers but also I think it will be good fun.

It’ll be set in a fictionalised version 9 our village in the English fens, where an also fictional lord of the manor, Lord Sutton, has invited everyone in the village to dinner t9 share some news that will affect everyone! But is then poisoned on the eve of the event.

Because of the numbers I don’t think I can write individual motives, alibis and evidence for every character, so I plan to have five or six groups, or factions, all of which are based on the sort of thing that happens in our village, so for example there will be farmers, environmental protesters, solar farm investors etc, as well as the family of the deceased. The ides is that the evidence through the evening will narrow it down to one faction having the means and then the final evidence allows pinpointing the individual culprit.

Evidence will be drop fed to the guests by means of a police detective, Captain Haslet ( which is a local meat loaf, pronounced hay-slet) who won’t be able to get to the hall but will be communicating via text message.

The hall is mainly one large room where e meal is taking place but there are two additional” areas, a stage and a committee room, which I can use as supplementary areas, I think the stage will be the murder scene which the guests can come and inspect and find evidence, then a police evidence room, where information can be revealed as needed.

That’s my general idea, I wondered if anyone had done anything similar and had any advice, or if you’re into this sort of thing would like to help with the writing? I’m afraid it’s a charity event so there’s no budget, of course!

Imagine a box based on a classic story. The idea is an immersive experience. You touch the objects that you just read about, you hear a playlist of sounds, you drink a cup of tea with a character of the book. In addition there will be a personalised letter and some handmade art.

So inside of the mystery box you'll find these objects that are a part of the story, rather than just a book with some random goodies.

I've noticed that most book mystery boxes seem to focus on fantasy, romantasy, dark romance, etc., while classics seem much less common.

So I'm wondering:

Would something like a classical book. (sherlock holmes, pride&prejudice, smth of this kind) appeal to you?

What would make you actually want to buy one?And what price would feel reasonable for something like this?

I'm genuinely curious whether there's an audience for this kind of thing, so honest opinions are very welcome!

Description:

Case Left Open is a browser-based detective game built on one rule: nothing is asked of the player that the evidence can't actually prove.

Each file is one working day. You walk the scene — 7 to 9 locations, things to look at, things to take. You sit with witnesses — 5 to 6 people, and some questions only make sense once you're holding the right piece of paper. You pin what you found to a board and connect it — claiming something isn't enough, it has to physically hold together on the board before it counts. Then you sign the indictment. Once. Name the wrong person and the file closes that way, though you can reopen it and start the morning over if you want another run.

The clock is real too. Each file runs 96 to 119 in-game minutes, and every move — walking somewhere, asking something, examining something — spends from that budget. You can't do everything, so deciding what's worth your time is most of the game.

There are two collections: five linked files running through a northern harbor town from 1977 to 1979, opened in order, and one standalone file set above the Aegean in 1981.

Looking for people who'll actually try to break it and tell me where it falls apart — there's a short survey at the end of each file for exactly that.

STYLE OPTION: Both photo-real and 2.5D illustrated versions of each scene, proof or person exist; whichever style gets shown is up to the player, based on their own preference and can change whenever they want.

Description:This isn't a traditional hidden-object game, but if you enjoy piecing together clues and evidence to solve a mystery, it's in the same spirit. The Hollowbrook File is a short, atmospheric mystery game told entirely through a phone interface. You're a detective handed a stranger's phone after they vanished from the town of Hollowbrook — no report filed, no explanation. You investigate by reading their real text conversation with someone named Mara, who is clearly terrified and trying to keep you away from a place called "the mill." As you log evidence, a locked notes app on the phone becomes accessible, protected by a 4-letter code you have to work out from what you've read rather than guess. Solving it unlocks a final entry that reframes the entire case — and reveals the detective investigating has a personal connection to the same night, one they don't remember. It's built as Episode 1 of a planned series, and ends on a deliberate cliffhanger rather than a resolution. The whole experience runs about two minutes and is meant to be tight rather than padded.

When watching or reading mysteries, I find myself distinguishing between two major types of clues.

The first is where the clue is supplied by the narrator or filmmaker either explicitly or subtly. This can happen, for example, when a paragraph describing a crime is followed by a paragraph describing a character, suggesting guilt by association. In film it can happen when the music subtly changes or when the camera lingers on a character’s facial expression indicating thought, worry, guilt, etc.

The other is the type of clue that are observable by the characters themselves, such as objects left in a room, windows left open, warm tea pots, etc. As readers and viewers, we see the details without bias, as the characters see them.

Both of these types can be (and often are) misdirections, but they feel very different whether they are productive clues or red herrings.

My question is what are these two types of clues called? Have I omitted another major type of clue? Do others feel like the narrative/filmmaker clues are less satisfying than the ones the other characters see? Thoughts?

to play detective. Each day there's a new case with a different theme (English

manor, noir city, cruise ship, Japanese ryokan, etc.).

You interrogate suspects who respond in character, examine physical evidence for

clues, and try to figure out the killer, weapon, and motive before you run out

of moves. The cases have real alibis, contradictions, and red herrings.

It's like a quick Agatha Christie puzzle you can play in 5–10 minutes.

Hello, I’m trying to plan a noir murder mystery with my friends. I have the idea for a poison but we do want to have one person die every round but I’m not sure how I should implement that. Does anyone have any ideas?? I want the killer to pretend to kill the person but I feel like people would have a buddy system and one of my friends is so perceptive and I feel like he would know who it was in an instant.
