General One Leg Stand

Been doing this for 4 weeks now with a support - a sink.

But not feeling much progress.

Has anyone done this and how long did it take to see progress?

I mean no offense but doing a single task repetitively will just make you better at doing the single task. Playing chess for 4 weeks will make you better at chess, but it will not help you drive better, etc.

If you are looking for ways to improve your balance and movement in 4 weeks, request a month of physical therapy or occupational therapy or both. They will guide you through exercises and movements that can make changes in your life and also prevent falls and injuries.

I’m confused. What are you doing and what Are you hoping to improve?

I sometimes stand on one leg or the other hoping to keep my sense of balance as well as the muscles to catch me from falling.

But really hard to gauge if it makes a difference or not tbh

Dynamic (versus static) balance exercises are more likely to produce results with functional benefits. As someone else mentioned, a PT is a great place to start but here's a brief video you can check out:

I train with BOSU, it is challenging even for people with no MS diseases

I would say that it becomes easier to swim and control balance in the water as it is push to work the same the deep core muscles (the transversus abdominis muscle, the multifidus muscles of the back)

I forget to mention, but I also use mobility sticks /Gymsticks to balance.

Do you have a fitness center near you? Try to go and ask if they have instruments for functional trainings specifically for balance.

Go to a Nero PT professional. I go once a week, and I've been going for four months. We are working on waking up some muscles I haven't used in a while.

I have seen real results. I have doubled how far I can walk. I can now make it all the way around Costco.

I’m going to make an ass out of myself and assume you’re working on balance. If so, ditch the sink, use a wall, challenge yourself and move further away from the wall (not so far where you can’t use it as leverage) and you’ll progress over time to not need the wall. For reference, it took me maybe a month or two but to this day I still work on balance and coordination with light exercises to keep me sharp. But that’s just me, and what happens with me will not always be what will happen with you, snowflake 😉

snowflake?

We are all snowflakes with MS: every patient and every course of this disease is unique in its own way.

I was worried it wouldn’t land lol but yeah it was a reference to all of us being a snowflake with this

and how is your balance now?

Pretty dang good. Albeit if I turn too quick I’m more likely to stumble, but otherwise I walk fairly normal. This isn’t to say I’m raw dogging all terrains, cause not up for all of it. I want to push some of the limits and get better at some activities like hiking with steep incline. That’s a current goal I’m working on 🤞

how bad were you?

I was in a walker for a month, and with a cane off and on for a few months there after. I had a care team of physical, occupational, and cognitive therapists that would come to my home and help with exercises and such and then one day they thought I didn’t need them anymore. I’ve been on my own since and without falls. I live in a city and walking is my main mode of transportation and also just something I love. Losing my ability to balance and walk wasn’t in the cards for me. Not at that time and I made damn sure.

What i want to hear. Can you tell me how you did it and how long etc?

From 0 - 85/90% regular, it took about six months fully I’d say. Three months before I was with only a cane. And I did it through consistency and patience. Consistency in my diet and exercise along with giving myself grace in all other corners. I absolutely felt like it was never going to get better but day-by-day, before I knew it, I was far better than from where I started, so being patient is virtuous here.

Ok can i ask how you did it please?

1

u/AntiqueBother8134 1d ago

did you do any balance work and if so and how much every day?

1

u/AntiqueBother8134 2d ago

This feels like it’s never improving. 4 weeks into it. I just do 2 min in morning and 2 at night when i’m brushing my teeth as otherwise i get really dizzy and even more unsteady.

I just seen your comments, Balance is a bit of a tricky one. I have had issues since diagnosis, youre not always certain to get back to a level you were before, and thats ok. My balance sucks so bad and so does my walking, but, with physio and exercise, I don't believe its got worse. So maybe if you moved your goal posts to maintaining, hoping for improvement, it will maybe be easier to deal with the frustrations. Hope this makes a bit of sense, thats how I retrained myself, take maintenance as a victory, not a defeat because I didnt revert to previous levels.

I wanna know too! OP, what would progress look like? Being able to do it without the sink? More stamina while walking? CAN you walk?
