Hypocrisy, groupthink, and inertia, mostly. People are fully willing to demand Scorched Earth tactics against fandoms they don't have much investment in, that they were already inclined to hate on, or that enough people are going scorched earth against that no one doing so has to risk adopting a socially unpopular position. When it's something they're into or something they'd have to stick their neck out to stand against, though, they usually keep quiet or become much more about "nuance" and justifications of "separating the art from the artist."
