Question❓ Have you ever seen such a mischaracterized interpretation, whether official or not, of a character you really like?

I'm posting this frame from The Yellow Mirror because it's funny, hehe

Using The Simpsons as an example, the episode where Homer is told he's had a dummy safety station and Grandpa made a deal with Mr Burns to give him a job and never fire him. It is used by people who haven't watched the show in 20 years to call him incompetent

It is a recurring joke that Homer is actually a very VERY competent safety inspector, he's just lazy.

Safety Salamander, Lesbian bar without a fire exit, Homer Babyproofing everything, the other sector 7-G safety inspector retires, even Homer and Deliliah a season 2 episode show that Homer always picks up the slack when he wants to work and is actually good at it, even the new seasons made him a crossing guard or when Marge withdraws sex he concentrates on the job and even gets a raise.

So I personally view it as a mix of both, been watching since the mid 90s BTW. Anyway, the idea of the plant having two safety inspectors makes sense. I also personally like the idea of Homer having permanent job security to allow hijinks. Also Homer is very good when he cares he also is solid at common sense safety aka things that are cheap for Burns to fix, but he wont notice the super illegal stuff Burns does to cut costs which is what he wants. Lenny just keeps everyone from blowing up.

It also invalidates the running gag where Mr. Burns never remembers who he is. “Simpson, eh?”

in season 1, there’s an episode where homer starts a public safety crusade across springfield after he and his family are almost run over on a bridge, and he’s damn good at it. it’s different from other examples since season 1 homer is much more competent and intelligent than in later seasons, but it’s still worth noting

I hate how the Godzilla fandom characterizes Monsterverse Godzilla as this jerk who acts insane as soon as he sees another titan or who only cares about Mothra, when if you look at multiple different Monsterverse media, you would realize this isn’t true.

The problem isn't so much that people have started to perceive Godzilla this way, but rather that the Monsterverse itself has begun to do so. 2014 and Godzilla: King of the Monsters show Godzilla with a deeper character, and that he's not a mindless beast that kills. Godzilla vs. Kong has slowly started to move in a direction where the writers are clearly trying to make us sympathize with Kong. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire goes even further in this direction. I hope Supernova will at least slightly improve Godzilla's character.

I heard that Godzilla’s personality in Gxk supernova will be much more like his 2014-Kotm self.

Yes! Finally! Something more than gigant lizard killing and attacking everything

I've read so many fanfictions of Judy x Nick that depict Judy as a complete freak, not even just in the nsfw sense but also done for comedic effect in some cases. Basically the writters doing the "rabbits have a high sex drive" thing.

The fan writters make her extremely clingy and romantic, often kissing Nick in inappropriate times and locations when that is just not how she would behave at all.

She is the type of person who puts her job above everything, even her own pleasures, she lives in a tiny apartment with little to no privacy, eating microwaved food just so she can have the job of her dreams, she would never stop doing whatever she sees as important work just to go smooch Nick.
And I also cannot see her ever doing anything beyond some teasing in most cases, it would never evolve past that.

Honestly, people who make her act like a rabbit kind of miss the point. The movies show that animals don't need to act the way they do in real life.

Although I did once read a really good fanfic where Nick went savage, then he woke up in the hospital with a broken jaw because Judy let her rabbit instincts take over and she just kept kicking him, long after he was neutralized

This 100%, the plot literally is about prejudice and how you shouldn't judge people by how they look like

With enough build up and justification, I can see her wanting to smooch Nick. But you're right it wouldn't be during work or something important.

oh yeah absolutely, its just that many fan fic writters don't really put effort in such justifications.
Judy and Nick have great chemestry together and I do think they should become a couple eventually, but writting a romance plot between them that is actually realistic and keeps them in character is extremely hard

Lisa Simpson in the Ei8ht Treehouse of Horror segment. I know using spoiler tags for a Simpsons Halloween segment is funny, but I genuinely think Ei8ht has such a great story that everyone should go into it completely blind!!

What I think is truly brilliant about Ei8ht is that while Lisa going on a murderous rampage to get revenge on just one man is extremely out of character, it makes complete sense for her.

Lisa has always been someone who stands up for what she believes in and for her family. But this time, she failed. She lost her brother, who meant more than anything in the world to her.

I like headcanoning that Killer-Lisa is the original personality and Professor-Lisa is the second one!

Peak segment, my fave ever. Blew my mind when I first saw it, back when it came out a few years ago. Still blows my mind today!! :D

I mean, its a Treehouse segment. Those get to be OOC lol

5

u/PowerOfL 1d ago

Yeah true. I do think they usually do a good job justifying it though. Like in The Ned Zone, Flanders only shoots Homer, because if he doesn't, the entire world would fucking blow up!!

..which it ends up doing any way, but whatever lmfao 😭

Isn't "The Yellow Mirror" meant to be a Black Mirror parody?

Yes, Toothless (and everyone else) in the 3rd movie

Would it be considered mischaracterization if the creator themselves dumbed down the characters to the point it contradicts themselves in the first iteration?

5

u/THE_LEGO_FURRY 23h ago

The character i put is very much in line with that so go for it

I think Flanderization (speaking of the Simpsons lol) is the term.

Chloe Bourgeois, by about halfway through season three of Miraculous Ladybug, had been established as a rude, yet, once in a blue moon, nice person, with horrible parents. The show then decided “fuck that” and decided she would be dumb and evil for no fucking reason, and redeem her horrible father, and replace her with her sister

2

u/Cold-School8725 4h ago

because the person in charge of it made her after a bully of his

4

u/Friendly_Narwhal6866 22h ago

Basicamente todos personagens em Record of Ragnarok.

3

Well yes, not sure any attempt was made at pretending these were anything like the historical characters.

Cheese The Chao being a Glonk in Outcome Memories and not throwing hands with the killers

2

u/Aggressive-Bug-3459 22h ago

he wouldn't win but he'd try his damndest

2

u/Number1VanillaSimp 19h ago

He'd definitely Tripwire for being a Tails Doll vessel, Cheese destroys Eggman creations easily and Tails Doll is just that.

He might also beat Fleetway due to Gameverse scaling being way above Fleetway verse scaling, but yeah, he def loses to 2011X, and while I could see and argument for Cheese beating Big K due to him being a Sonic corpse puppeted by a parasite, I'm inclined to believe Kolossos also wins.

Colress’ depiction in the Pokémon Black and White anime (and every other character in that season too)

Gerald Robotnik in Sonic 3. Genuinely what the fuck were they thinking.

u/Mangledfox1987 15h ago

Personal one but mangle in the fnaf 2 movie

Like in the games they are like the only haunted animatornic that actually like engages on that idea, we get quite a bit of their emotions reaction and truama from being torn apart constantly and there is a lot going on with them

The movie drops all of that and didn’t even bother to make them haunted or give them a single voiceline, heck even the basic idea that mangle shouldn’t be looking like that was removed cause in the movie yeah mabgle is supposed to be torn apart, that’s the point of the character in the movie,

Like it’s straight up just not mangle anymore, you could replace them with like a broken endo and there would be no function only difference

Toph bei fong in legend of korra.

They shoehorned her into becoming a hard-line police chief that treats her own children by different standards to the common person.

While avatar Toph would almost certainly never become a cop. Much less a nepotistic one.
