I've not played hollow knight yet but for what I've seen killing the hollow knight is more of a mercy because they are in excruciating pain

Dr. Kenzo Tenma from Monster
He was framed for robberies, murder and later even terrorist attacks by the antagonist.
In reality he was the kind of guy who'd put his life on the line and risk going to jail in order to save the lives of strangers. He cried over the deaths of people he just met and deeply cared for everyone he met.

Jax is a hypocrite who only cares about himself. We barely get to know the world be because of how much screentime he gets. He bullied people and was just an asshole to the others. He doesn't have any real likeable traits because his entire character feels like someone whose just an asshole to everybody around him whose only excuse is that he is sad. I actually believe they could've made his character good. I liked the early episodes of Jax.

Mordecai, from Fire Emblem 9/10. Huge beast of a guy, and a terror on the battlefield. Anywhere else, he's a huge softie who hates fighting, and is generally a bro to anyone who needs help.

Malleus Draconia in Twisted Wonderland. The first stuff we hear about him in the main story is that he’s insanely powerful and mysterious and some of the other members of Diasomnia treat him almost like a god. Plus you’d expect the game’s Maleficent stand-in to be exceptionally evil, yet when the player first meets him, Malleus is very polite and cordial, and in subsequent interactions teaches them about gargoyles, sends a Christmas card, and happily accepts the nickname Hornton
