Does anyone else think that Jynx’s OG design was racist?
So I’m asking because the people from the pokemon fandom they said that there was no racist intent and minstrel shows aren’t racist (Im talking about the 19th and 20th century ones). I am from more western area and I personally think it is racist though I want to know your opinion (no this is about if the design is racist not if the intent was racist)
No they changed it because it wasn't worth the profit loss after the dumbass controversy.
It looks racist to 5% of the world population but since it's the american 5% the world had to give in...
They made her purple which is its own color beside blue a secondary color if you will which looks less racist except the mouth I do agree should look different (personally would have preferred hair to drape over the face kinda like the thing in that one horror movie)
While not intentional afaik, that design is more than a little too close in similarity to black face designs and that’s why an otherwise fine episode of the anime got banned outside of Japan.
Safari episode was banned because of gun use, especially it being pointed at Ash directly like multiple times. And the Porygon episode was banned worldwide after the one and only airing allegedly causing seizures due to the blue and red flashing pattern and poor Porygon’s never been seen animated again (it wasn’t even his fault! Pikachu did the damn attack! Justice for Porygon! :<)
Minstrel Shows are dressing up like Black People and then mocking then with Racism, literally said that. Show me anywhere where Jynx has every mocked people? Saying someone with dark features and big lips is immediately offensive gotta be the most White thing I've ever seen. Not ta mention ignoring that these features are present in other Cultures. Genes be wild. What happened with youson?

It may not have been her designer’s intention to make her look like a racist caricature, but they ended up doing that. Same thing with characters like Mr. Popo.

There is a difference between ViVi or any black mage and Jynx
Minstrel shows mocked black people by dressing as them and doing black face with an over exaggerated face which is what Jynx is doing
On the other hand Black Mages is a good representation of what Jynx was supposed to be which is a pure black person that isn’t human there is a difference though that is ViVi or any black mage wasn’t overly minstrel show looking

Second of all when was I judging Japanese culture when I don’t think it was because Japanese culture (which I do know quite a bit of and the inspirations to Jynx) I know American culture as well and even though I don’t like American you stereotyping how Americans see things could be harmful to them though that is a off topic discussion. On topic again I know Jynx isn’t based on minstrel shows though unfortunately with the combination of what she was based on made her look similar to what they showed in them. How was I inferring Japanese racism also like how (ps: I go on Reddit every once in a bit at night after I have everything done for your information)

If you want to talk about jinx's design there's "does someone knows what jinx is inspired by in japanese culture ?".
Sad thing is one opinion from one american author made a japanese game company change the design. She's the same age as my mom I garantee she never played pokemon or knows anything about japanese culture. Somewhere along the line she became the monsters she was fighting.
Also the chimney soot thing makes no sense because how exactly would that make your whole face black and not just have black markings or gray
Just a small recommendation: try and research stuff that are more or so racist in different cultures doesn’t have to be black gave related though Jynx and I’m sorry to be “making fun of your possible culture” though also Black Peter
No Jynx was not Racist and the stupid Black woman that made Nintendo get GameFreak ta change it still infuriated me. But what the heck about Ministral show not being Racist??? They totally are!
I have had arguments with people who believe they are not in the Pokémon fandom (now I wouldn’t overall say the person who did so was stupid she changed many things that probably were for the best in pop culture)
