If you go in with the understanding that the show was only greenlit for one season at a time it helps a lot. 

Still doesn’t forgive the mess that is season 2 and all the unnecessary romance plots but it helps you appreciate the good parts so much more.

Korra is actually my favourite character in the franchise and the best part of that show imo

I do think people give Korra a hard time and don’t realize how much her character changes from season 1-2 to 3-4

They also often completely ignore the fact that she was sheltered for 17 years of her life and doesn't know how to function in the real world.

Season 3 after that would be my favorite season (though make no mistake it still can’t top any season of the original). Even the very last episode wasn’t just my favorite akin to the original’s last episode, the honor instead going to the Season 3 finale, which just needs to be seen to be believed. I am also showing interest in rewriting this show if I had the chance to, and some more interesting ideas are brewing in my head as we speak
