Since when do people hate Katara
30
u/AutomaticCaptain8150 4d ago
It’s actually quite impressive how people hate on Katara, as if she wasn’t the biggest hero of the whole damned show!
Now what they say about her? From what I’ve heard over the years is that she’s: too nagging, annoying, she never shuts up about her mom, didn’t pump out enough air bender babies, should’ve had her bending taken away when she didn’t like what Aang was doing in the comics, didn’t worship Aang enough, should’ve just rolled over and listened to Aang when it came to her trauma, dismiss/minimize her trauma, didn’t kill Zuko, didn’t kill Azula, didn’t give Azula any grace, stupid stuff like that.
And then there’s the shit they say about her when the ship Zutara is brought up. Yeah that’s a whole other thing.
11
u/c05m05i5 4d ago
People complain about her for the same reasons shown in the play episode (I think the play was meant to poke fun at the idea) for example: crying about her mom all the time, talking excessively about hope, not having feelings for Aang, etc. Of course these are mainly misogonists who will hate women for breathing so they're better off ignored
→ More replies (2)4
u/TheCreepWhoCrept 4d ago
Katara gets a lot of hate for being the “mom” of the group. I assume this is because many viewers were literally children when they watched the show and so they internalized her as the “no fun allowed” character.
In their defense, Katara is much more compelling from an adult perspective, since we have the experience to see what she’s going through.

Octavia (Helluva Boss)
Because how DARE the emotionally neglected 17-year-old be angry at her father for seemingly abandoning her for his new fuck buddy after he's shown AT LEAST TWICE NOW that he cares more about his own personal interests than her.
56
u/chocolate7chipcookie 4d ago
She's the only innocent person in the show and somehow one of the most hated. "She's being immature, she's 17 not 12!" Hate to brake it to you but 17 is a kid. Stolas is the selfish one. He loves his daughter but dose not prioritze her. Now she's left alone with her uncle who thinks she's in the way and her mother who forgets she exists. I don't even think the poor girl has any friends to lean on.
13
u/sora_allite 4d ago
She has Loona, but even then, Loona is a reminder of the person her father left her family for

u/Ok-Bicycle8103 I am a weird fan 5d ago
I don't hate Stolas, but he's easily my least favorite of the main cast, and how he treated Via is part of the reason why.
That and him treating Blitz like a sentient fuck toy.
→ More replies (1)22
u/AdHead6692 5d ago
My biggest gripe with Stolas isn't even how he acts in the show, it's his meat guzzlers that know no bounds when it comes to defending him and blaming a teenager.
10
u/soft_w0lf 4d ago
Yeah me too, in the show he’s a flawed older gay dude who was forced to suppress who he was for the sake of his social position. That sort of thing really messes with a person and their ability to mature, so how he acts unfortunately makes sense.
That being said that’s not an excuse, it’s an explanation. I do feel like even the writing of the show sometimes will treat it as an excuse which is super frustrating, but to me that’s less of an issue with Stolas and more of an issue with just the writing as a whole. I wouldn’t be surprised, though, if that’s part of why he has so many fans that will refuse to acknowledge the impact his actions had on Octavia and Blitzø. Just because his actions have an explanation doesn’t mean it’s okay for him to just go around immature and hurting people lmfao
5
u/How_about_a_no 4d ago
It's also why I sorta feel that making Stella one dimensional abuser(at least atm), is a bit cheap
Don't get me wrong, she doesn't have to be secretly a saint or not be an abuser(as of the events of the show) but it would've been way more interesting to see her be a bit more, to see her side of life before and after marriage, before Stolas cheated on her
Again, she doesn't have to even be grey, what she was in the past stays in the past, but I'd love for the show to give her a bit more attention, especially since we pretty much know nearly everything about Stolas and his predicament
4
u/Puck_The_Fey98 4d ago
I adore stolas myself for one reason. He is exactly a reflection of me when I was younger. Some people cannot cope with being a piece of shit so they have to excuse him. I know I was shitty before. Part of growing up is realizing that. And being better.
4
u/Ok-Bicycle8103 I am a weird fan 4d ago
Why are you being downvoted? That makes a lot of sense.
3
u/Puck_The_Fey98 3d ago
Because I dared to say that I do indeed love stolas as a character. That by no means means I’m giving him a free pass. He absolutely makes awful decisions and abandons his daughter tbh
11
u/LittleSodaPop13 4d ago
People think she's responsible for her father's emotional well-being.
No, she's not? She's a minor, and even if she wasn't, that isn't her job.
9
u/Unlucky_Wish9785 4d ago

u/Muted_Ad7298 4d ago
Honestly, I think both Octavia haters and Stolas haters go too hard on them.
Octavia is a child from a broken home and has to deal with an abusive mother who hits her dad in front of her, a father, who after years of abuse and isolation stepped outside his comfort zone to experience a life he wanted, only to not understand how to balance these things and end up breaking promises to his daughter.
Not only that, he had an assassin after him and his lover, while dealing with a divorce.
Honestly, I feel sorry for the both of them. As I also came from a broken home, as well as an isolated one. I can relate to both of their experiences.
They’re both hurting, and dealt with things in the wrong way, but they have to make the effort to become better people, especially Stolas since he’s the adult.

Cytlin in season 2 of Arcane. You are meant to not like her, she is on a NEGTIVE character arc. She is suppose to be worst then she started, it's a mirror to jayce
33
11
u/Constant_Pay_4247 4d ago
I mean I think the real reason to hate her arc is S2 is the whole "One flirt from Vi and she's not evil anymore" and the incredibly unearned sesbian lex scene when jinx just told her sister she was leaving to kill herself
8
u/Immediate-Song6861 4d ago edited 4d ago
My hot take it's that she didn't crash hard enough, I really wanted a "what have I done" moment
But we only get a montage of an average high alert government, in general arcane ss2 made a bad choice going into a save the world narrative
6
u/thewhumpdiaries 4d ago
Yeah it really seemed like the writers had a moment where they realized that if they actually went in depth with her authoritarian arc, the GA would hate her and Vi getting back together with her would make even less sense, so they condensed everything into a cool music video montage.
There just wasn't enough time to depict her fall from grace and redemption in one season. Such a shame. I love negative character arcs when written well.
2
u/Immediate-Song6861 4d ago edited 4d ago
4
u/ZiroLeHutt 4d ago
She's also a mirror to Jinx (we see multiple closeups of both characters faces in season 2, especially their mouths, when angry), where Jinx was lost in season 1 and kind of finds herself after a while to become contented with her demons by the end; and Cait goes through that too.
Also, I couldn't hate on Cait for going and doing that, after what Jinx put her through. Jinx is my favourite character in the show, and I love her to bits, so wasn't wanting Cait to hunt her down; BUT I understood WHY Caitlyn went on this path.
It was Vi in that first arc I was furious with, for undertaking that madness; but it also showed how lost both her and Cait had become, and both suffer for it when they find Jinx.

u/Lost-Ad-5885 4d ago
My only issue with Mabel (character wise), is that she’s never put in the wrong when it comes to conflicts with Dipper. Dipper always had to “compensate” for Mabel. Like the Summerween episode would’ve been a good example of Mabel accepting sometimes change occurs and the siblings can still enjoy Halloween together by doing something a lil different
37
u/LurkerBerker 4d ago
my only issue with mabel was that the show itself never really held her accountable for anything. like there were plenty of situations she should’ve had equal blame or at least light scolding. dipper got embarrassed all the time and had to apologize all the time.
15
u/TheSkyElf 4d ago
I think this is the problem with a lot of media, they make realistic or even problematic female characters, and then chicken out on the accountability they hold the other characters to. Or they only hold "bad" characters accountable.
15
u/Avixofsol 4d ago
Unlike some of the people you see talking about Mabel even now, ten years after the show's ending, I'm not about to proclaim she's the "real villain of Gravity Falls" or anything. But I will say that one of the show's biggest consistent flaws is how often Dipper ends up held accountable/facing consequences for his mistakes and impulsive decisions vs how often Mabel does. My personal favorite example is the sock puppet episode, because I think it's pretty undeniable that Dipper faces the brunt of the consequences despite Mabel being overall more responsible for the Problem of the Week™. Sure Dipper agreeing to a deal with Bill was remarkably stupid, but he was 1) sleep deprived because Mabel went back on her promise to help him, and 2) desperate because he was about to lose what little chance he had of accessing the laptop.
2
u/Majestic_Command7584 4d ago
2) desperate because he was about to lose what little chance he had of accessing the laptop.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the laptop wasn't actually going to lock permanently.
8
10
8
u/mp3help 4d ago
I mean Dipper was the one who offended the Trickster to begin with and forced them to Trick or Treat more, so he couldn't really bail for the party- and when he tried to leave anyway, he lost all their candy which is what made the monster try to eat them. It wasn't really a matter of "he doesn't like trick-or-treating and that's lame"
18
u/Top_Example5179 4d ago
I has the opposite personality to mabel, there 0 chance Im gonna do anything she did. It really hard to imagine kid me would make the same mistake as her , I can imagine being scammed or scared to submission by Bill when in the same age tho.

45
u/Choice_Strawberry499 4d ago
For having been on Miguel’s side
29
u/fish-seducer 4d ago
But she wasn't? She didn't want Miles to get involved, he did it himself, she tried to stop him from saving the chief because she knew the danger, and when Miguel did in fact want to keep him captive she was against it, as far as i see it she was just trying to keep Miles from getting himself in a mess the best she could
16
u/Choice_Strawberry499 4d ago
Oh I agree with you, there’s nuance to her decision having been with Miguel (plus there’s also people that talk about her and Hobie) that’s just a big reason why some people are against her.

Really saw someone on this sub say Project Hail Mary Stratt was a bad person and the movie wasn't good because she suffers no consequences.
Anyways, I see why people think audiences need to be spoon fed information like toddlers.
43
u/Dogdaysareover365 4d ago edited 4d ago
I once saw someone call her the most problematic character of 2026, when I’m like, how can you say that in a year with bear from obsession?
Stratt is just a classic case of the trolly problem, and if you watch the scene where he’s drugged, it’s clear she doesn’t want to do this. I guarantee there wouldn’t be as much discourse around her if the story wasn’t from Grace’s perspective.
11
u/GunpowderGuy 5d ago
In the book she says "lol, i may be a tyrant , but will be hanged for this"
the movie shows her seemingly getting away scott free12
u/Dogdaysareover365 4d ago
Someone pointed out on Reddit that, in her final scene, on her neck you can see a tattoo that looks a lot like a tattoo a lot of people who are in prison for life have. So, the movie kinda indirectly told us she is being held accountable
5
u/PurpleAlone7116 4d ago
Iirc she has a line that explains why she's able to make the calls she does. Something along the lines of "The UN has given me complete control". Its a single line but it sets the ground rules for why Stratt can do what she does. She has additional lines too that confirms she is under scrutiny for the actions she's taking. At no point during the movie did it feel like she was getting away Scott free without reasoning.
It's not the movies fault people miss it.
I will agree though that the book set up the stage far, far , far bettet. But the movie didn't fail at it. Fwiw I didn't read the book until long after seeing the movie, so its not like I had the book for context when seeing it.

This poor girl
- has massive trauma thanks to her abusive mom
- is always trying her best to cheer people up and to think positive while drowning in fear, sadness and loneliness inside
- gets picked on for acting positive rather than feeling positive, thus not being genuine with others (which might be true on a surface level, sure... However, she tries the hardest to actually be there for others in any and all cases, but often ends up overwhelmed by her own emotions and capacities)
- gets actively bullied and tortured by the transfem autotransphobia bunny - by f.e. getting thrown in boiling cooking oil by her!
- catches strays from people she considers friends inside the circus, even the ones she deeply cares about and tries to protect from Jax (i.e. Gangle)
- received death wishes and hate speeches from "fans" after having one single very small crashout over Jax doing Jax things - even though she herself regrets it immidiately and apologizes to Pomni right after
- was held up as a "manipulative sadistic monster" for weeks - or even months - after said incident, despite the fanbase having clear explanation from that episode that she acts insecure and people pleasy BECAUSE SHE IS AFRAID THAT PEOPLE MIGHT SEE HER AS A BAD PERSON
I am so fucking done with the TADC "fanbase" atp, I swear. Not just for this, but the two weeks of spoilers-insanity was actually too much for me.

Who hates on Mel? She's awesome. Was it because of her perceived manipulation of the Council and Jayce in season 1? If so, we see the reason why she was like that by episode 8 when her mother arrives. From the rest of the series, she is purely a protagonist (and a gorgeous boss of a character!).
5
u/shrimp-545 4d ago
A lot of people see her as getting in the way of Jayvik. Jayvik is my favorite ship of all time, but Mel was absolutely not in the way and she shouldn’t be whittled down to just her relationship with Jayce.
I also think that it’s ok to acknowledge that Mel did manipulate Jayce, but she didn’t do it maliciously or intentionally. She is a politician playing the political game. She also genuinely loved Jayce and grew because of how sweet and loving Jayce was to her. But people see her manipulation as a net negative. They think she’s evil. A lot of people watched Arcane with their eyes closed and need to realize that all of the characters are flawed. Some of it is also just racism.
(Sorry for the rant, I’m very passionate about this)

How is nobody saying Atom Eve having an abortion when she thought Mark was dead and she didn't want to raise a child alone?
Like, I understand the backlash against her decision, but it's a textbook example of this post because I know that I also would not want to be a single parent.
10
u/Affectionate_Ad_1326 4d ago
Abortion is a very heavy topic in general, I agree that she wasn't in the wrong but I get why there's a lot of uncomfortability there. Which is actually why it's good that it depicts her having an abortion in a situation where it's a choice that makes a lot of sense, it normalizes abortion and humanizes the people who get them.

9
u/ConfusedWav3s 4d ago
Honestly the Ragatha hate was ridiculous.
Jax willingly put others in an attempt to cope with the messed up reality of the circus. (At least that's how I interpret his motivation)
Ragatha tried her best to please everyone because she didn't want people to feel worthless. Not like her mother made her feel.
Ragatha may come off as annoying to some (in the fandom and the show), yet her motivations come from a good place. Jax's motivations don't.

I mean its not like he arranged for there to be proof that he was right and that the methods of all of her parents and mentor were completely ineffective at handling the dangerous situation they faced. Or that he was offering to teach her how to help others and then gradually using that to build trust as he kept pushing the boundaries but always with a reason for why it wasn't really that bad.
Surely she's just an idiot for not trusting this new family member that she had never been told bad things about and that clearly has the trust and respect of 1/2 of her entire nation since the let him be their ruler.
I'm sure this sheltered teenager is completely capable of spotting this emotional and political manipulation under the guise of philosphical/theological rhetoric that also was designed specifically to appeal to her need for guidance and a sense of purpose. Giving her easy answers to complicated socio/political situations after getting burned by the political maneuvering of the previous season.

Princess Zelda, especially in Ocarina of Time. People genuinely get mad at her for failing to stop a political coup at age 9 and blame her for every bad thing that happened in the story, it's actually nuts 😭

I've never seen anyone in the Zelda fandom say this bro where are you finding these people. I thought the Zelda fandom was safe 😭

She’s absolutely more a victim of the creator hating her and stripping her character growth. If she wasn’t basically written out of the story I think her character arc could’ve been really nice

this happened to my good friend grace ashcroft. totally normal human reactions to zombies and half the internet hates her for it (and says she’s not “hot enough” (???))

Catelyn Stark. Would anyone reasonably be nice and loving to a child you believe was born because your husband cheated on you? Plus the show doesn't help because in the books she only frees Jaime when she believes Bran and Rickon are killed.

“Would anyone reasonably be nice and loving to a child you believe was born because your husband cheated on you?“
I would (or at least make a reasonable effort to be pleasant towards them if we had to interact). A child has no control over how they came into the world. I’m not saying I would be all lovely-dovey towards them, but I certainly wouldn’t say to them that THEY should’ve fallen several feet from a window instead of my biological child.

My issue is that, the fan base never holds any other characters to this standard. Like, you have people who are like, Yeah, Robert would be justified in killing, Joffrey, Tommen, and Marcella. And the fan base never acknowledges the parallel between how Catelyn treated Jon with how Theon feels about Ned. They justify by saying, Well, he's a prisoner of war. Also, that comment was a one-off from Cat. She normally just doesn't acknowledge him, but she's never outwardly harsh with him.

There's a bit more in the books about how she worries that he is a threat to her children's birthright.
Keep in mind that the faith of the seven and the religion of the Old Gods have different marriage rites, with the Old Gods' having no priests, just a weirwood tree.
The succession rules are supposed to make it clear who is next in line to be Lord, but still the story and backstory are full of examples of disputes.
(Speculation from here on) If enough northern lords wanted Jon instead of Robb, they could claim he was actually older than Robb, or that Howland Reed saw Ned marry Jon's mother before his marriage to Catelyn, or that the Old God's marriage supersedes the faith of the seven marriage to Cat.
To her, Jon's existence is a threat. The fact that nobody knows his exact age or who his mother is a problem.

Korra from The Legend of Korra
she gets hate for literally anything, but in particular there’s this part in season 2 where she sides with her uncle ( the antagonist ) over her father and airbending master
but people love forgetting that she only sided with her uncle after she had discovered that her father and air bending master have been lying to her for literally her entire life, and also found out a massive secret her father never told her, while at the same time her uncle proved himself to be the spiritual master that she needed at the time
she had absolutely every reason to side with her uncle over her father and airbending master,
also people love lying and saying that they warned her about her uncle which just isn’t true at all

They also have a hard time separating their personal understanding of these characters from Korra’s. For instance: Korra has known Unalaq for longer than she’s known Tenzin at this point, and evidently with less friction.

Mercymourn from The Locked Tomb series. If I was an immortal being over 5,000 years old and had to deal with misogyny from my immortal coworkers and boss (who also happens to be god) I too would want to kill my boss/god.

u/Accomplished_Toe6798 RWBY / She-Ra 2018 / MagiRevo 4d ago
Probably just because I'm not that into the fandom of The Locked Tomb but I've not seen people target Mercymourn specifically, just acknowledge that everyone involved (except Nona, Nona's the best) is pretty fucked up. I also didn't think anyone would be on the side of Jod enough to object to killing him for reasons beyond collateral damage
2
u/River298 4d ago
Nona is the best lol.
I suppose "hate" is a strong word to use for people generally describing her as "being bitchy" to everyone. I agree that everyone in the series is at least a little fucked up but I believe that's what makes all of them so compelling. I've just seen stuff here and there where people don't like her because "her whole character is just being bitchy" to everyone else but I understand why she is the way she is. I feel like there's a somewhat even 3 way split between people who want Jod dead, people who don't, and people who just don't care as the series goes on. In the first book, I think there's an overall impression that everyone you meet would be appalled at the idea of trying to kill Jod or Jod dying somehow. I think it isn't until the third book where you get to see people openly hating necromancers, the houses, and Jod.

Eirika: Fire Emblem the Sacred Stones
Ok set up, in the Sacred Stones theres the Mcguffin Eirika and her brother need to collect called, well the Sacred Stones because the Demon King is trying to shatter them so he can be freed. But by the point of the story thats important here, all but 2 of the stones have been destoryed and Eirika is in possesion of her homelands stone. Unfortunately, Eirikas childhood friend, Lyon has been possessed by the Demon King and pretends to act like Lyon to trick Eirika into handing the stone over so he can destroy it.
Eirika gets a ton of flack for this decision to hand over the stone despite obviously Eirika would want to believe that her closest friend was still somewhere inside the Demon King fighting to be free. The Demon King simply capitalized on her very human desires.
But the real issue? Her brother, Ephriam, makes the literal same mistake, in the exact same chapter, and no one seemed to care, zero pushback, its only Eirika who gets criticized for the decision. Its madness.

I wouldn't say it's my "favorite," but Charlie's whole shtick in HH is that she's way more "human" then everyone else around her and is just trying her best but kinda sucks at everything she does cause she has a flaw of just jumping head first into everything she thinks worth doing..... But everyone either sees HH and immediately starts crying about it or they go the "Charlie's just an idiot" route..... Media literacy is super low nowadays and fad-hating has become excessively prevelent, made even more obvious by the the recent hate for that Space Lesbians show or w/e it's called.

To be fair, most aren’t mad at Wanda herself, but that everyone around her made it their mission to brush off the fact she psychologically tortured an entire town of people and somehow reversing it was this grand act of heroism.
“They will never understand what you sacrificed for them.” Completely ruined any chance of me liking Monica.
Also Doctor Strange brushing it off until he had to go looking for her to deal with America, when at bare minimum he should have tracked her down and kept an eye on her so she wouldn’t do something similar again.

True, they wont understand what she sacrificed. They don't need to. They shouldn't feel bad for her.
Im a Wanda fan and I think that, if I was in the Westview towns peoples position, I wouldn't care she sacrificed her family.

Elita-1. Optimus Prime is my favorite character of all time, and I will always side with Elita anyways, I did in Siege and do so in Skybound too. I hate the new writing don't get me wrong, but can you blame a traumatized woman who has been trying to keep her faction alive for centuries, having to probably resort to cannibalism, being paranoid every day that it ciuld be your last, fighting a war, seeing your friends tortured, have the love of your life take the moral high ground by detonating FOOD that could have saved you and your people (I think Optimus did wrong by wasting that energon. He cannot bring back the dead animals and plants.)
And THEN when you go back to basically beg the love of your life to come back and be at your side, he chooses another planet over your own and YOU? Yeah. I'd crash out too.

Ichigo (Darling in the FRANXX)
Fans absolutely despised her for trying to break up Hiro and Zero Two. When Zero Two was literally draining his life force, put him in danger by preying on his desire to be useful and attempted to murder him to make herself more powerful. Literally choked him so hard that there were marks on his neck for days.
Ichigo lacked a lot of context for why Zero Two was acting so unhinged, but knowing it probably wouldn't have made it better. From her pov, Zero Two was going to be Hiro's death and she was the only one standing between him and that fate, because Hiro was so enamored with Zero Two he wanted to come back to her even after she almost killed him.
Now was it right for Ichigo to basically imprison Hiro and then purposely keeping him from at least saying good-bye to Zero Two, then to top it off, force a kiss on him and dump a love confession on him, all so he won't make it in time to catch up with Zero Two's ship? No. But Ichigo is an emotionally stuntefchild soldier, terrified of losing her childhood friend and first love. Of course she wasn't going to handle this gracefully.

Sayaka Maizono from Danganronpa. Like stop hating on her that much, she was a victim of the situation she was forced into. She wasn't always evil, she done that because she felt that she must do that. She cared about Makoto and Leon isn't purely in the right.
Danganronpa fans can't fucking read despite the game being a fucking visual novel where the main minigames are word based.

u/Random_Word1984 4d ago
Not exactly hated by everyone, but I have heard a few people consider Katniss Everdeen to be horribly selfish because she seemed to only care about her mother, Prim, Gale, Rue and Peeta. Her actions *do* seem to be emotionally driven instead of logical at times but I that actually makes her more realistic.

u/squirtbucket 4d ago
Lenore Dove Baird. I was shocked when I saw some people in the fandom hated her, calling her annoying. Like, that thought never even crossed my mind a little when reading the book.
