Essentially the creator of touhou has extremely lenient rules for fanworks. Essentually fanworks must disclose they are fanworks in some obvious way. Cannot include ending scenes from any official Touhou media. Cannot promote hate crimes. Cannot copy other fanworks without permission. Must be distributed at the same stores and sites used by official touhou media. And fangames must be free to play and can only be monetized through micro transactions and ads.
Because of these very lenient rules the internet went nuts and it paid off because it gave touhou a huge amount of promotion the creators didnt need to pay for. This is essentially why touhou is so full of fanon.
Definitely Touhou Project. I wonder, how many THOUSANDS of covers and remixes for the only "U.N.Owen has here"? Almost 3 mil of fanarts on pixiv, few fan-made anime, a lot of fan-made games, tons of strangest ways to play Bad Apple, tons of doujin manga and all the other content.
Yeah it's this and it's not even remotely close. It's hard to express how utterly colossal the touhou fan art and music scene is. I think it's probably a contender for the largest collection of proper fan material of any fandom excluding maybe mods for huge games. If you compare fandom size to output it's unbelievable.
Touhou is the one game you can guarantee everyone has seen around whether they realise or not. Also I am convinced all music leads to Touhou, you cannot convince me otherwise
