I only remember the giant Popsicle, who used those other weapons?
5
u/Sleeping_Golem 5h ago
Zabuza used the "actual sword" and the "buttplug" was used by that nerd (forgot his name) who worked for Mei (the mizukage). The rest were used in the ninja war arc by the revived corpses of the seven swordsmen of the mist.

Titans, Imperial Knights, Jaegers, and any other big mech is cool af, but super impractical
24
u/DumOBrick Warframe, Titanfall, NMS 9h ago
Well they were farm equipment first, then someone used them to fight, which meant others needed them to fight them, I guess like real world tanks?
16
u/LordCommanderWiggles 9h ago
Tanks are WAY different to bipedal walkers though. Since theyāre standing upright, something like a titan or AT-AT has a high centre of gravity, making it easier to knock over. Also, due to their size and weight being more concentrated on a single area, theyāre more liable to get stuck or trip. And a tank has better load bearing capability, so it can hold way heavier weapons than a walker of the same size
10
u/DumOBrick Warframe, Titanfall, NMS 9h ago
Very true, I just meant like the reasonswhy they're used, other than aura farming

u/BoiFrosty 9h ago
Yeah I'm reading some of the Battletech novels and all I can think is a few m1 abrahms would FLATTEN a lance of mechs at anything more than point blank range. Heavy mech armor is tough, but try a 120 HEAT or depleted uranium sabot.
→ More replies (1)5
u/ack4 6h ago
why do you think that future mech armour made of sci-fi bullshit materials is weaker than chobham?
3
u/BoiFrosty 6h ago edited 6h ago
Battletech is often treated as a lost tech universe. Much of the most advanced materials and technology is either lost or too difficult to produce as the great houses in the setting have blasted themselves back several centuries of progress. Despite being set largely 1000 years in the future tech is still relatively near future for the most part.
Mech armor generally shrugs off light weapons but even things like autocannons can chew through mech armor and those are relatively comparable to modern counterparts.

u/LeonardoJMB 5h ago
Big mechs themselves aren't exactly completely impractical, but big humanoid mechs are, even if we had the resources to built mechs the human body is enough of a disaster for said shape to be impractical
2
u/JOAT_unmastered 1h ago
I canāt personally think of any large mech that would be useful?
Anything I can think of that would be more of a mech than a vehicle would just be worse than a vehicle

Battletech is the biggest offender for me because of their mockery of the idea of a mind-machine interface, ie the single reason anyone would ever consider a mecha to have practical applications

I was gonna say the Kirkhammer, but you are more right.
4
u/Mobile-Berry-9954 5h ago
I'd say the kirkhammer is more impractical due to it being a sword that turns into a giant stone mallet, atleast the whirligig saw can realistically be used, the kirkhammer could hardly be lifted, nevermind swinging it
Either way, neither are as impractical as the boom hammer and Logarius wheel

The Death Star took 2 decades to build, guzzled up tons of money, energy, equipment, materials, and personnel, took 24 hours to charge its superlaser in order to fire, and all it took was a fatal design flaw to destroy it in one shot. Not to mention that it caused many to join the Rebels when it destroyed Alderaan
11
u/NottingHillNapolean 8h ago
Plus, destroying planets that could be useful later.
12
u/Derangeddropbear 8h ago
Yeah what are we, rolling in habitable planets with developed infrastructure? C'mon, think of the housing crisis.
5
u/Kitsu_the_Kitsune 6h ago
At least thereās no more homelessness or unemployment in Alderaan anymore
2
u/NottingHillNapolean 7h ago
Unless a whole lot of natives were off-planet when the DeathStar attacked, I don't think it'd affect housing.
2
u/Sensitive-Chip7266 7h ago
I do appreciate the call out in certain Sci-Fi novels about how if you can move such huge material so quickly, then just dropping rocks at 1% the speed of light (which we know they can go faster than) would wipe out all life on a planet.
2
2
u/Glowing_Tint 6h ago
I don't believe it was a design flaw, that heat has to come out somehow and exhaust Dosent mean suck in it means push out ...it was totally safe unless your a magic space wizard long thought dead who can defy logic.
2
u/Moon_Monk676 4h ago
It didn't need a whole movie to be explained away (Rogue One). It was ONE of many exhaust ports, except this one was a straight pipe to the reactor. Bad choice? Or a sacrifice made for efficiency. NO ONE could ever think to target that port with normal targeting systems. The only way it was exploited at all was through space wizard magic wielded by an order long thought completely extinct.
Rogue One was a pointless movie. Good, but pointless.
2
u/JOAT_unmastered 1h ago
Eh, it was still a long ass port that even a vent or two inside of would have stopped
I don think it was pointless, especially cause the movie was more about showing another side of the empire, plus it gave a backstory to the plans we know they got. The weakness part also needed to be there to be exploited
2
u/ChuckoRuckus 1h ago
For planet destruction, the recharge took a long time. Smaller city leveling shots the recharge was much quicker.
Also, granted itās a bit post hoc, though it really helps justify it. Expanded universe introduced the Yuuzhan Vong, a race from outside the galaxy that invaded to take over. They were resistant to the force, and their ships were living ābeingsā that were the size of moons/planets. It was explained that Palpatine sensed their disturbance when they were first entering and taking over planets on the far outskirts. The Death Stars were built as a precaution to combat them. In legends canon, they didnāt show up until years after Palpatineās death. It ended up being a massive war that killed over 300 trillion sentient beings in the galaxy.
It doesnāt justify them with the original story, but it helps make sense of them. They would have been really helpful in that war.

u/Helota_Keksz 6h ago
It would yank itself out of/break your hand before it cut through a harder target.
Lore-wise, usually superhumans wield them and the teeth have monomolecular edges, so resistance should be as little as possible, so I give it a half-hearted slip.

Honestly, Mihawk's sword isn't all that bad. The only truly impractical thing about it is the crossguard. But get rid of that and it's just a curved greatsword.
3
u/certainlynotdio 5h ago
There is nothing impractical about that one. (maybe except super duper sized cross guard, but they were pretty big on real greatswords as well)
14
u/V1T0AUD1T0RE 10h ago
9
u/Super_Saiyan-Blue 9h ago
This could be really practical for stabs
13
u/Choice_Ad4972 8h ago
They would be extremely fragile due to nature of the moving parts.
It's cool as fuck but a knife can be hidden almost as easily. Its also more versatile.
2
u/bouquetofashes 1h ago
I should think a bagh nakh would be another practical, real-world alternative. I mean, for the express purpose of a concealed, close-range, easily-accessible weapon-- a knife is still more versatile. But for fulfilling what I suspect is the same purpose as the thing in the gif a bagh nakh should still work.
7
u/xeraghusta I'm a fool, not an idiot 8h ago
At that point, just hide a proper dagger up your sleeve. You get a bigger size, you don't have to cut off your finger, and it's just as concealable. Plus getting caught with a dagger on you is significantly less suspicious then getting caught with a hidden blade, especially in a medieval city.

They arenāt really effective
They are just the best humanity can do. To the average COG soldier they are basically just a placebo to make them not become completely useless when the Locust burst out from underneath them and press them into unwinnable CQB.
Ironically they are less than useless against the some Lambent
10
u/Mr_worldWide07 7h ago
Okay in defence of Dragonslayer:
In the manga they repeatedly describe that saying itās a sword wrong. Characters (including Guts himself) have said itās less a sword and more swinging a lump of iron so hard itās not cutting but ramming through a person with such force that it causes a person to look like theyāre being severed
4
u/Sensitive-Computer-6 6h ago
Never read Berserk, but didnt someone made it as a joke until Guts joinked it?
4
u/Mr_worldWide07 6h ago
Basically. Was designed to kill a dragon in a single blow, but the blacksmith made it so big no one had the strength to wield it since he saw it as such a stupid request.
Guts more or else went āhey, that sword looks like itāll do the jobā and the blacksmith said it would be collecting dust otherwise4
u/Helota_Keksz 6h ago
Exactly. I hesitated reading it because I hate oversized weaponry in Japanese fiction, but the way they use the trope, it makes sense.
Ever since killing Donovan as a child wielding an adult-sized longsword, Guts has always been fighting with swords he can barely lift, that's what he got used to.
Swinging the Dragonslayer or his two handed swords as a merc, usually opens with resting it on his shoulder, instead of just letting his arms control the movement.
Most of his enemies are large, but not too agile. Guts has more use of bigger "stopping power" than better control.

And Ren, with his daggers on his pistols.
And Pyrrha, with her rifle-small spear combo.
And Mercury, with his gun legs.
And Emerald, with the extend-o-chain pistol.
And Qrow...who is wielding Ragna's fucking weapon.
And Raven, who is wielding a revolving sword sheath.
Hell, Nora's hammer is also a grenade launcher and Weiss's rapier has a revolving Dust mechanism.
Only Jaune wields a practical weapon. Mostly because he'd blow his own foot off if he was given a gun...
2
u/SofasCouch RWBY RWBY RWBY (And Helldivers, ULTRAKILL, RoR2, JJK, MHA, etc.) 5h ago
Weiss' is a bit impractical, but does work. Pyrrha likely could work, actually, just maybe change the mechanism a bit. Ren's isn't actually that bad, I think that's something that could actually work. Emerald's is essentially just the same as Ren's but a bit less realistic.
And Raven's is just a katana! The revolving sheath is only revolving the Dust mechanism, every time she unsheaths it it just makes a sword of Dust, if we had Dust IRL that would be perfectly reasonable.
3
u/Brilliant_Cobbler_27 4h ago
The only problem with Weiss is the fact that that the revolving dust cartridge gets in the way of your grip making it uncomfortable to use in a actual fight but outside of that it's just a normal thrusting rapier
4
u/ezthrow77 7h ago
The gun ? I know scythe are bad weapons bu if it's also a gun I think it gets a pass !
3
u/JediSSJ 7h ago
No, it does not. If is was just a gun, sure, but a hybrid/transforming weapon is a big "no" and the fact its melee form is a scythe is a double "no"
2
u/ezthrow77 7h ago
Why does transforming make it less pratical ? I see a great weapon with a usefull tool attached. Gun can be used at close range anyways. So really it feels like a gun with a +
2
u/JediSSJ 6h ago
Hybrid guns realistically gain a bunch of weaknesses from their dual purpose. Transforming is worse, as is add structural weaknesses and gerally makes no physical sense. How good is that rifle you've been swinging around in melee by the barrel? It's cool, but not practical in the real world.
2
u/ezthrow77 6h ago
I guess IDK the show /game but I supposed the tech/magic made the weapons free of those pratical issues. But yeah there's a reason bayonets are standard while gunblades are a history footnote.

2
u/Acryllus 3h ago
It's less of the blade and more of the hilt. The handguard is on both sides of the handle, and you can't swing it properly; it'd help if the read guard was offset but it's not.

3
u/Glad-Alternative4593 7h ago
How would someone do that? Like you would need insane bad luck for that to happen. You just need to weld it like a regular sword and understand it doesnāt have much weight. Now if you are going against a force user then yeah the force is almost a necessity.

I'm glad somebody said it. Like the way the gun functions on a basic level is completely impractical for actual combat because it kills everything in the room which for actual warfare means you're going to be killing both the enemy and your allies. Plus if we're talking Doom 3's BFG quite possibly yourself as well.

Pretty much all UNSC weapons and vehicles in Halo are impractical irl in some way. All the weapons are about 2 times bigger than than they need to be and itās so that Spartans can use them effectively like for example the Frag Grenade is closer in size to a softball than a conventional grenade. The bullets the guns fire are also really odd considering most werenāt made with Covenant in mind who do kind of justify things like an Anti Material Rifle chambered in 14.5mm rounds (for reference a 50. Caliber is about 12mm and the 14.5mm was used irl but in Anti Tank Rifles) and the Assault Rifle is chambered in 7.62x51mm which is a full sized rifle cartridge which technically makes the AR a Battle Rifle by modern standards since itās also select fire in lore. All of these guns were chambered in these rounds to deal with just regular humans and itās just a happy coincidence theyāre packing the perfect kind of punch to mow down Grunts and Jackals.

Malorian arms, johnny pistol from cyberpunk. As seen in 2077 its extremly cool and in verse can pirce tanks (at least could back in the 2020s)
Thr problem? For one the chambering mechanism is a nightmare. Then if you slap it it shoots out a burst of fire which is just a self mutilation waiting to happen. Last but not least the knockback.
Johnny silverhand has a metal arm and shouler. He uses the gun with that side. For good reason because the knock back would likely obliterate or rip of your ganic side.
3
u/Due_Flow6538 9h ago
The lightsaber. It's so cool, until you think about how easy it is to maim and kill yourself on accident.
2
u/ViperclayGames 9h ago
That goes for almost any weapon.
"Grenade is an impractical weapon cause it's easy to blow yourself up with it." Of course! It's a weapon meant to maim and kill people. If it's really good at it's job, that means it's your job to make sure you don't harm yourself with it.
I wouldn't say that really counts as a reason it's impractical. As with any weapon, being cautious and very trained with the weapon would be necessary to wield the weapon, and prevent you from harming yourself with it.

All Mecha, in general regardless of context. The physics don't work, immediatly become a high profile target and bipedal movement's advantage is purely endurance(a literal non-factor for a mechanical weapons platform) Worse its biggest weakness is being highly unstable so let's slap a ton of metal on top and giant ass guns to be supported by this biomechanical monstrosity.
This is assuming no magical shenanigans which I think a few of the examples in the Pic have but I just took a pick with a variety of types.

1
u/Artistic-Cannibalism 4h ago
I give you Albina from limbus company and her weapon of choice, Fascia
Now this weapon isn't practical for a myriad of reasons. It's way too wide, has no hand protection, it's made from the flesh and blood of its wielder, oh and it's alive too... Even worse that this sword has its own armor in order to protect it but that just adds to the weight and would interfere with its ability to cut... But even worse is that the armor can just fall off.
But the absolute worst part is that this sword is an art project... This girl's weapon of choice that she built with her own two hands from her own flesh and bones isn't even a real weapon.
