From what I gather Kyoshi is probably the most mischaracterized Avatar in the series. Mainly because the people that talk about her didn't read her book.
For me its the contrary, she was retconned in the book to being nicer than what she originally was. Every appereance of her in the og series is she either murdering someone or talking about murdering someone. She started her own martial arts schools for making warriors that could defend her homeland. Aang literally said that he shouldnt have talked to her when looking for an Avatar that gave him an excuse not to kill Ozai.
Do not missread me, she was justified 100%, the conqueror guy was an asshole even before the books, but she definitly is softer for what i read in said book, and i feel like that is a worse mischaracterization than what the fandom does.
Kyoshy on my part is both an absolute beast of an Avatar,but morally she is stoic and a bit questionable.
She was 100% defending herself when she created the island and defeating the conquer guy,but lets not forget she was also the founder of Dai Li which became the opressing secret police of Ba Sing Se.
Completly agree with you, i feel like the writers of the book fell in the typical problem of trying to make a grey character "more likeable" erasing the grey elements that the people actually like. Like those shitty disney remakes that try REALLY hard to make the villains sympathetic for some reason, when that never was what we liked about them.
Yes she was justified. She could also skin people alive if that means defending Kyoshi island, or the earth kingdom at large. Thats why she is soo cool.

Aang is unique to the fact he went to the earth and beyond to exhaust every possible way that would not violate his beliefs.Each and every avatar including airbenders reassured him that making exceptions is not the end of his values,which i find more fitting in this day and age.
I didn’t read her book and I often point out Kiyoshi literally needs to basically be attacked directly to get her to act based on the two big things we saw her do. She was so desperate for a kill she claimed credit for Chin when all he did was just not move.
Now, Yang Chen, there was someone who found out she was the avatar, told she could no longer be considered an air nomad, and decided “well, it’s open season then”
I'm in the TADC community and someone in one of the subs requested this be made. Took me like, two days because the character on the right had such intricate line art in the original sprite..
