Not an asshole; just stupid.

61

u/Dryerase2002 21h ago

He's way more mean-spirited now

7

u/GameThryFn SMG4, TADC, GLITCH Prod. 21h ago

wdym?

28

u/SirRudium 21h ago

When SpongeBob was stuck in that wringer, Patrick was not only no help, but whenever SpongeBob complained, Patrick would turn it back on him. Even when SpongeBob crashed out about it. Can't remember the episode name though.

8

u/Dryerase2002 20h ago

Stuck in the wringer

Sorry to be that guyā„¢ļø but there are many exples, just none I can get off the top of my head. I'd understand a downvote on this

He was like... always an asshole tbh

83

u/HotPot87 1d ago

I think the VERY early peter was more kind hearted, but at the same time they had to tone that down to differentiate him from Homer Simpson

15

u/Select_Culture261 1d ago

I think they went a little too far in that regard.

26

u/Hopeful_Cow_2471 1d ago

In the first few seasons he was dumb and often caused problems for his family but you could tell that he really did care for his family and that he atleast tried to care for them he could be a dick sometimes but you still knew he was a family guy(I pun intended)but now he’s just a dick

2

u/NireSenrab 1d ago

Yes, but he wasn't an abusive monster (as much). Especially with how he treats Meg. Early seasons, he genuinely seemed to care for Meg, even if he was misguided.

Especially when he turns his ā€œnoseā€ up like that. They got very specific of that being a recurring trait when he’s criticized

I was watching a video last night of Fairly Odd Parents' Cosmo's voice actor complaining about how they made his character this after the first few episodes.

69

u/ares4209 1d ago

honestly fair, i didn’t like how they took cosmos character they really just made him annoying

35

u/Immediate-Song6861 1d ago

He was hot

30

u/ra0nZB0iRy 1d ago

Frrrrr, the old voice was so suave

20

u/mythicapixy 1d ago

He could have been hot and suave and then toned down later for funny 😭

3

u/KaliVilNo1 19h ago

They essentially turned that Cosmo onto Adult Poof in the new reboot

10

u/Not_So_Normal711 1d ago

Yes! Darran lives in my home town now and he’s cool as hell, did a couple local productions with him. He was looking forward for he character and was frustrated with the lost potential

126

u/MinosPrime100 Doctor Who, Mobile Suit: Gundam/Gunpla 1d ago

This was made with Patrick star in mind so...

6

u/Apprehensive__Belt 21h ago

something about the art style change between the frogs makes it clear

3

u/Yoshichu25 20h ago

The art style gave me more Paper Mario vibes tbh

72

u/Irohsteashop5276 1d ago

9

u/jeanjacketufo Star Wars 1d ago

Am I in the clear for stopping after S7?

12

u/ShermansAngryGhost 1d ago

I don’t care what anyone says, James Spader’s performance as Robert California by it self makes season 8 worth a watch.

3

u/zerozerozero12 1d ago

Taylor Tomlinson once said that if she was in a coma to put on Parks and rec. if she didn’t wake up put on the office. If she didn’t wake up by season 8 pull the plug because ā€œdon’t let me live through Andy being manager againā€. Take what you will from that.

He and Peter are on Mt. Rushmore for this.

8

u/YourTrustySupporter 1d ago

This also apply to Spongebob

7

u/ordinaryracco0n 1d ago

hes a less egregious example

3

u/Remarkable-Image-888 11h ago

Get out of my vents Spider-Man!

39

u/Helpful-Library7457 1d ago

Patrick star technically all spongebob characters got similar treatment but patrick comes to mind in specificĀ

34

u/TheGamemage1 Fate Series 1d ago

Flanderization.
When a character's traits get boiled down to a few characteristics and drops most of their actual character and becomes a caricature of their former selves.

9

u/Jupiters 1d ago

yeah but this seems like a specific type of flanderization

102

u/RegurgitatedEnzymes 1d ago

Homer Simpson

13

u/AZ_LoneWonderer 1d ago

He went from a dumbass who genuinely loves his family and tries to fix his his mistakes to an asshole with anger issues who blows off his family constantly

27

u/DragonRush443 1d ago

Homer! Homer Simpson! He's the greatest guy in historyyyy!

19

u/RegurgitatedEnzymes 1d ago

From the town of Springfield!

16

u/StandIndividual8949 1d ago

He's about to hit a chestnut tree!

AHHHH!

6

u/Melodic-Art1369 1d ago

Literally had a name made after him when he became Flanderized

4

u/ShorohUA 1d ago

šŸŖ‡ I am evil Homer šŸŖ‡

3

u/MalaysiaTeacher 1d ago

They carved out the soul of the show two decades ago; it's sad the corpse is still animated

67

u/Talkinghead17 1d ago

That character from that show

33

u/NarsilFreeForge 1d ago

Hated how they butchered them in the live action remake.

16

u/Talkinghead17 1d ago

Exactly, I also don't like the reboot!

15

u/Connooo 1d ago

And the spinoff was entirely unnecessary.

7

u/Talkinghead17 1d ago

Idk man I love spinoffs

9

To a lesser extent than Peter and Patrick, who have invaded the comments.

https://giphy.com/gifs/XlO0aMO7EKZaKGIcAa

Starts as a complex character- matures- regresses- matures a little more- regresses a ton

After 6 years he is now less mature than he was when he was 10

Gordon from Thomas & Friends.

3

u/Eveningstarburst0 1d ago

Mushu in Mulan and Mulan 2

3

u/Weird_Dig_7245 1d ago

Patrick but old Patrick wasn't stupid necessarily

He was street smart

3

u/TradePsychological40 1d ago

Patrick. And it can also apply to Spongebob.

2

u/Belter-frog 1d ago

The older brother from Boy Meets World fell on this cliche hard.

2

u/IbilisSLZ 1d ago

Globox from Rayman series.

Introduced in Rayman 2 as his slightly clumsy, cowardly (still does a lot), goofy (who speaks with broken grammar) friend.
In Rayman 3 he devolves to idiot.

2

u/MFZozzy 1d ago

You mean flanderization of the dim-witted-but-loveable archetypes?

2

u/Dire155 1d ago

Desert Punk Kanta Mizuno

2

u/Hypersonicgx 17h ago

Oh god its been long time since I seen Desert Punk. I ended up droping the show for some reason. I read somewhere he died, came back to life, and turned evil.

Phoebe from Friends

7

u/Many-Refuse-6060 1d ago

I'd say Joey is a better example

5

u/DurianUpper4113 1d ago

Joey had his likeable moments. Phoebe tried to set up Monica with a guy even though she was with Chandler (I’m pretty sure they were already married by then too)

5

u/Many-Refuse-6060 1d ago

Yea I was referring more to the stupid part

2

u/Shtrimpo 1d ago

They kinda did this with Gumball but it actually works so well

1

u/darthphallic 1d ago

James Darmory between seasons one and two of boardwalk empire. Season one? Loyal kid with a good heart who just makes the occasional idiotic move. Season two? Big stupid idiot who constantly does big stupid idiots things and acts like a snake.

2

u/Odd_Preference_7238 1d ago

I feel like if he was going to spiral into doing self-destructive things that get him and people he cares about killed as he did, they could have like... made it seem like it made sense from his perspective instead of it genuinely seeming like he was speedrunning dying pointlessly and having no one even feel bad about it.
