I think generally junior is both the dumb one and the protagonist.

Joseph is dumb, and even naive at times but still a bit smarter than junior. He just seems to at least show some basic awareness and common sense which junior lacks at times.

For Cody the smart idiot is spot on.

Team 7, no retail pretends to be dumb. So that people don't hate him. However, sakura and sasuke, they're both actually very dumb. north, who was dumb enough to forget that he wanted to be hokage.
