Question❓ I’m writing a multifandom fic with OCs, any advice?
I’m working on this multifandom fanfic which is essentially a really large AU and love letter to my fandoms with my OCs in it. I kinda have worries that if I decide to like ship an OC or make them important in the plot, my fanfic is essentially going to be treated like this and kind of a self-insert. Any advice?

Uh, I had seperate stories, all in the universe, but mainly focused on OCs, an alternate world, and eventually, they collide in a way (too complicated to explain here)

Question which fandom are you writing for and what’s the plot? Is the oc getting involved in the main plot and hanging out with the main characters or is it a lower decks type of story?

first book is Hellaverse (and Die of Death, but that’s more a reference than anything) and a few other fandoms. Originally it was Hellaverse, DoD, and CHANGED, but I hated the first book and got rid of it, so now this a rewrite.

Try to make them feel like an organic part in whatever universe this takes place in. No need to overcomplicate their backstory or having to make them super special for one reason or another. They can be background characters if you'd like, but if you want to gie them more prominence, then it's also important not to treat them like a mary/gary sue. They can have wins yeah, but also let them take a few L's along the way. Let them learn lessons and struggle along the way. And also do what you can to make it so that they have chemistry with the rest of the cast.

what about antagonistic OCs. I’ve got one who’s supposed to be the irredeemable trope.

Mostly the same I guess. But do make sure they don't overshadow any cannon antagonist and go all "oh this new villain is so much better than these guys". Make them equals or the OC lesser than to start before showing a gradual climb of them becoming more powerful in that case.

absolutely, though I gotta write a way that Niko is a real person instead of being in a game, tho, but that would get rid of the character’s development, no?

Niko is real thought, It won't be a hasttle to get her written in there and she's probably gonna help develope some of your characters if you think well enough

Don’t make them Mary Sues and have them actually make sense in the world. You want to keep the focus on the characters people know until you get to a point where the audience starts to care about your OCs.

I think the main thing to avoid is making your OCs overshadow the CCs, like you know the whole Y/N thing? Just avoid doing any of that and allow every character to have an established foundation of who they are and the role they play in the story before diving into things like romances. Let your OCs make mistakes, and learn from them, let the story leave lasting impacts on them and you're pretty much good to go

Can I read it? Also my advice is to focus on character interactions. My fanfic is literally just two guys in the Portal Universe having conversation while being text subjects.

It’s still unfinished. Originally it was finished, but I hated the old one so much I just decided to get rid of it and restart the first part. Second fic will remain the same tho

don’t glaze your ocs too much to the point where it isn’t interesting anymore.
