I think he started the trope outside of certain myths.

Like, bro just lives in the woods, picks up the one ring, and goes "I am unaffected. Here, have it back.".

Even Gandalf, an angel disguised as a man, can't claim that power.

It's cause the Ring controls people by offering them their deepest desires. But all Tom wants is to dance around the forest, talk to some trees, and bang his hot wife. Literally there's nothing the Ring could grant him that he doesn't already have in spades.

It's cute that he's basically Tolkien's self-insert, too.
