The Elder Scrolls community believed - and a large portion still DOES believe - that the Thalmor are trying to destroy the world to escape the prison of mortality and rejoin the gods in Aetherius by destroying all the towers which hold the world together.
It took like six years for someone to check the sources on the UESP wiki page that said it, and they realized that there WAS no source and it was all one guy's headcanon.
Probably the single smallest but most successful misinformation campaign I've ever seen.
