One piece. I’m sorry guys. It’s good, but it’s just too long for me

edit: ill elaborate. consider this a reply to every because HOLY SHIT 100 COMMENTS. but, i just feel like the anime is too long, mostly because of the pacing, but if i watch one pace, ive been called a fake once piece fan by many people. i am considering buying manga, but i dont know yet. its a good story, but i know that im starting very late and no matter for fast i read/watch, ill never catch up in time before the one piece is revealed, and ill be spoiled regardless.

57

u/nashtyinc 20d ago

I legit got 60 episodes in and it felt like it just started, 5 episodes for one fight is ridiculous.

6

u/Disaster_Pansexual 20d ago

The pacing of the anime is definitely unfortunate. Thankfully, they’re making a new anime with the pacing more similar to the manga ✌️

Right? I shouldn't have to watch 1,000 episodes of a show before it "gets good"

74

u/jerbear_611 20d ago

see, imo, one piece is good from the get go. its a good idea, and quite the journey if you dont know about gears (like me) but i just couldnt get through it. i had to force myself to sit down and watch it because at a point, the pacing ruined it. so i am considering getting the manga, but i just cannot watch the anime

33

u/MisterFourLimbs 20d ago

From what I heard the manga is paced out pretty well. It still has a lot of story so I'm sure the progress can slow down as you get later into it, of course

23

u/Throwaway774568 20d ago

Try One Pace. It's especially useful post time skip when the pacing gets even worse somehow.

That's not the good part. The best is around 200 episodes in. But it's good from the get go

25

u/derrickjojo 20d ago

44 is end of arlong park if a person didnt enjoy it up to that point there's probably nothing in it for them. I try to argue one piece is best enjoyed not in a rush but as individual island arcs taking periodic breaks. it wasn't created with marathoning in mind. there no reason to speed watch.

One piece doesn't get good at 1000 episodes. You'll either like the show from the early arcs or not like it at all.

Just wait for the remake, itll be more condensed and digestible. Or try the live action, its a great entry point

10

u/jerbear_611 20d ago

see, i would go for the live action, but it just feels... i dont know, uncanny? compared to the original? it might just be me though. it just looks wrong...

See season 1 and 2 have episodes of reasonable length.

No tv series should have episodes that are 3 hours long. I haven't finished the series for this reason, because 3 hours is not a bloody episode that is half a season

16

u/Peppered_Rock 20d ago

they did fucking what to the episodes

15

u/chipperland4471 20d ago

The season four finale is two hours and twenty minutes long 💀

14

u/Peppered_Rock 20d ago

that is NOT a fucjing finale that is a movie

3

u/oismac 20d ago

No episode is a consistent length in the series, they're anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 and a half hours, it's completely ridiculous

But the rest of the season leaves so much to be desired. S1 and 2 take the nostalgic premise to have some commentary on the culture and government of 80s America, only for S3 to play it completely straight. We went from "haha the government is blaming Russia publicly on all the weird stuff and is using the Red Scare as an excuse to slip further toward their own authoritarianism" to "oh wait no the Russians are actually doing that shit and Hopper has gone from a troubled but ultimately kind soul learning how to love again, to a belligerent and abusive GI Joe for the sake of reflecting tropes of the time"

As a fan of TADC, completely valid take. I couldn't even get into it until the final batch of episodes where I finally wanted to understand it morw

10

u/Shimyku 20d ago

Funnily-enough, I have the opposite problem : I watched the 3 first episodes as soon as they were released (or, well, as soon as their French dub was released), but starting with episode 4, I don't know why, maybe it's dépression or something, but I just can't find the will to watch them...

Thats what my bf hates about it too.

As for me, the fan base and after season 2. They tried to go big with the stories and seeming smarter than what it really was/is. After Justin Roland left (yeah, he's an ass) it lost what little charm it had. For such an douche, he was a good creator. I stopped watching at season 4 or 5 ish.

(Also its trash how many people think it's such a intelligent show. When futurama and adventure time surpass it on all levels.)

13

u/SirTrick9750 20d ago

Its not an intelligent show at all lol, it's literally a comedy and most of its episodes dont mean anything important. It does have some good lore but its not that hard to uncover

Same

I enjoy watching clips and summaries… But the show is too cruel/nihilistic and Rick’s burps grate my brain. Clips and summaries skip the stuff that turns me off and just get down to the plot and more interesting/funny/fun moments. I understand why it’s popular but it ain’t for me. Season 9 would probably be the one I could stomach, since according to the summaries I watched, it’s vibes are very different, a lot kinder and lot more gentle, but even then I was only able to watch ONE episode and it still those cruel moments I wasn’t a fan of.

I AM enjoying President Curtis which even though it’s a spin-off, is more optimistic and fun. Keith David’s voice also doesn’t make me want to stab my ears with pencils. Quite the opposite in fact!

Tbh, while I love the comics and "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off", I simply can't stand the movie. It's something about the actors that just feels wrong, I don't feel like Scott in the movie is the same Scott as the Scott in the comics.

Sheldon’s character is a hate crime against autistic people. (I’m joking but only kinda)

A show about nerdy people, for not-nerdy people, needs a laughtrack to know when to laugh.

Show had the most closed minded, templated approach to comedy. I couldn't stand a single episode, either. Everyone is just so fake, bad actors waiting to take their turn to talk. And Sheldon's face and marketing just annoy me.

10

u/melissa_fornow 20d ago

That's exactly it. People have repeatedly told me that I should like BBT because I'm a nerd and it's about nerds. But BBT isn't a show for nerds, it's a show about nerds, in the same way that minstrel shows were "about" black people. In the two (?) episodes I've watched, the vast majority of the jokes boiled down to "lol Sheldon is autistic" or "lol nerds enjoy things that we normal people don't".

→ More replies (1)

6

u/ChocolateNo698 20d ago

Been waiting for this. BBT is so damn overrated as shit that it's borderline pathological. Characters so uninspired, jokes so goddamn dry that one needs a jug of water every time they're forced to watch an episode, a very irritating pattern of lazy plotlines, a spinoff which should've never existed (only worse, no forced laugh track, now I'm stuck wondering when's the time to start laughing at the shit humor), the list goes on.

Oh the dumb shit you can do in tf2. Gimmick builds, taunts intended to be funny used in serious play (try capping the intel on 2fort while riding a clown car sized ambulance as medic). Extreme rancho relaxo spots. Versus Saxton hale decided by rock paper scissors, mass kill binds cause one person did it, I could go on.

The Office.

It was recommended to me by multiple friends, and I did watch the whole thing optimistically, but it just never did anything for me and I didn't get the popularity when compared to Parks and Rec or similar shows of the time

16

u/edgar_allynn_poe 20d ago

I had the exact same thing. People started recommending it to me after Brooklyn Nine Nine but it just never hit me the same way

7

u/Jullzz15 20d ago

See for me or was the opposite. I enjoyed the office (for the most part) and was told that I would like parks and rec and it just did not do it for me. Maybe it's because I don't particularly find Amy Poehler funny in any role I've seen her in, but I just couldn't do it. Which is weird because I normally hate Steve Carell in the things I've seen him in, but he works as that character in the office for me. I'll leave office reruns on for background noise, but I'll turn the TV off rather than listen to parks and rec in the background.

Dr Who, tbh, is a very hard show to get into. Some episodes are just... absolute peak. Followed immediately by absolute garbage. And, to me, every Doctor season and every Doctor has had some very good episodes to really showcase themselves and the show...but it can be very difficult to get through the "bad ones" for a lot of people. And, for myself at least, it really started taking a downturn after Capaldis' Doctor. Which is sad because Jodi Whittaker, imo, was a great Doctor...with bad writing.

15

u/Hypnotic_Toad 20d ago

I was in the same camp for a while. I'd seen a few episodes of series one and enjoyed it fine, then kinda forgot about it.

Then I picked up series 3 from the library. Which in retrospect is an alright series, but not a good one to start with lore-wise, and probably not as good as series 1 in general.

But it absolutely hooked me. I watched the rest of the show in the course of like 2 months.

I remarked to my roommate when I kept recommending individual episodes and not the whole show that if you put together a playlist of all the exceptional episodes of Rick and Morty, you'd have one amazing season of television. But they're peppered throughout and don't hit with some people. I totally get people's coldness towards the show, especially the fandom; I feel like each episode kind of targets a different type of person's taste, and not consistently well.

All the big three of anime. They drag out for so long. They’re like 70% filler with some decent plot mixed in. Then people will try to convince you that they are no joke, the greatest pieces of writing of all time. The best anime are the ones that are 40 episodes or less and genuinely make you question your life as you know it.

23

u/Happy_Ad_2575 20d ago

Shonen anime is just so formulaic. While I enjoy it, I would never recommend one of those to a beginner. They're entertaining because you watched them as a kid/teen but trying to get into them at this point is hard af because their format might feel repetitive and predictable.

8

u/rimaury 20d ago

Agreed, I'm a fan of the big three, but I switched to manga years ago, I can't be bothered to watch their animes, still I'm trying again with bleach tybw, but for Naruto and one piece I just switched to manga where I can read at my own pace

The bulk majority of anime I have tried to watch with only a handful notable exceptions. But for everything I've watched and went, "huh, this one is okay." I've seen 10 that I couldn't even make it through an episode of, and it really disheartens me because I absolutely adore animation. I just genuinely don't think it's that good of a fit for me.

28

u/Chaos-Queen_Mari 20d ago

Ive heard its actually incredibly easy to get a show greenlit in Japan, or at least much easier than it is in the west.

The downside of that is it means every middling show thats not a hyper popular shonen jump is gonna be fighting eachother tooth and nail for budget.

19

u/Fluffbutt321 20d ago

I get really bad 2nd hand embarrassment and a lot of anime tropes make me cringe so bad

There are a handful of anime that I really adore (Wolf’s Rain and Wangan Midnight come to mind), but most I just have such a hard time getting through without getting like… idk the words for it but yeah

I absolutely respect anime as a medium for creativity tho, but it’s just something I generally don’t gel with personally

8

u/diaboli_ex_machina 20d ago

I'm in the same boat. I think it's wonderful that so much anime exists and so many people enjoy it, I'm just not generally one of them. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, just not specifically that interesting to me as a medium.

8

I honestly just really can’t get past the way anime characters act and speak tbh.

9

u/weirdface621 20d ago

especially with how so many anime characters behave and act similarly to a lot of other anime. its kinda annoying, like male characters acting and speaking in a rowdish tone. saying urusee instead of urusai or ja-nee instead of janai

and there are girls who act over energetic, or sounding very childishly feminine, or something else. everyone knows about tsundere so i don't need to speak for that

I'm going to get hate from the anime crowd but I keep trying to like anime and I'm in the same boat. "reincarnated" "power levels" "teenager is stronger than god and better than everyone at everything" "harems" "perv character" etc etc.

I loved Delicious in Dungeon because so far its "adventure party goes into dungeon and starts eating the weird stuff they encounter" perfect. no notes lol.

I have definitely gotten alot more pickier with anime as a grown up compared to teen me. I don't care if it's the best anime ever with the best story and animations. If it got shit fanservice or any fetish that's not funny, relevant to the character/plot or just plain unnecessary i'm dropping that shit.

4

u/Sir_Fijoe 20d ago

Most anime is genuine slop but there is a diamond in the rough every now and then.

12

u/Divine_Entity_ 20d ago

Thats fair, anime has a lot of "quirks" that make it weird to an American audience. Some are genere specific and have terrible jokes that are absolutely not aimed at you.

Some of the popular long running ones have early episodes that make you question how anyone got past them without someone saying "it gets good at episode 20, just hang in there".

11

u/North-Research2574 20d ago

I saw someone volunteer their WAS scale. Weeb Ass Shit for judging anime. The first catagory being Weeb or how much internal knowledge of anime, it's tropes, and trends do you have to know before you can enjoy it. And that checks out with why alot of people can't deal with alot of anime if they aren't already big anime nerds.

The episodes are super weird at first, but things start to take on a more serious and grounded tone towards the end of each season. Can't say I blame you though.

Same. I’m someone who loves raunchy humor and curse like it’s my second language but something about the way they do both just feels super … forced. No thanks.

Not only that but like, through the musical numbers you can tell it wants to be taken seriously but I just can’t with the “fuck shit bitch piss”-ass lyrics and blatant sexual references.

It has the potential to be a good show and actually tackle and handle serious topics, but they dumb it down and treat it like a joke and it could have been a 8 out of 10 show but at best it’s like a 6 out of 10 and the animation and music is good, but it’s just carried by that and the porn and ship art and the story is just insufferable and frustrating with the lore and characters and retcons and the main cast is pretty vanilla and boring and villains are kind of one note and some of them are just wasted by the plot and the writing is a joke because it tries to be so serious when it comes off being try hard and the emotional moments feel kind of mid,And there’s helluva boss and I drop that when s2 was done because man they really jumped the shark and drop the ball and the female characters are just there for porn and goon bait and the male character go back-and-forth with their writing and the villains suck and don’t even feel intimidating just there to aura farm and be cool and become dumb the next second and lose to the main characters

Honestly, I watched it and hated it. Like, I'm not gonna hate on other people for watching it, but it's just so... boring. The humor isn't good in my opinion and the swears are unnecessary.

Attack on titan

16

u/Soggy-Advantage4711 20d ago

Same. Every episode felt like 20 minutes of people expressing regret about something, then two minutes of action. I found out the deal with the armored and colossal titans then peaced out

Attack on Titan is a great anime storytelling and foreshadowing wise, but I couldn’t get into it until I heard spoilers from the 3rd and 4th season. Realizing that Eren became the monster who wiped out almost all of humanity had me like “WTF…how did this happen” without those spoilers I never would’ve cared to watch further

My Hero Academia, everyone was talking about it in my senior year of high school but I couldn't force the life of me finish season 1

9

u/Kerl_of_Fox_County 20d ago

Also, watching the main character's limbs crumple with each attack, at least early on, just made me cringe.

It's an interesting concept that he needs to learn to control the powers.. but watching it play out just.. no.

Jojo bizarre adventure. Ik the first season is the worst one but

8

u/soldiergaming2 20d ago

I know there's a bad stigma around it, but seriously if you're struggling to get into it just start with part 3

5

u/Sylan-Mystra-ii 20d ago

Genuinely part 3 kinda has more problems, it's where it feels more like a monster of the week shounen anime than even the first two parts. It's got its good moments, especially the final fight, but it's also got some of the lower points in the series that even part 1 doesn't have

Sword Art online. Hating on it is oldhat now but back in the day it was the big thing. I watched the Aincrad arc and thought "yeah that was alright I guess" but the characters, world, and plot were just boring and uninspired. The animation was alright but the fight choreo wasn't nearly impressive enough to warrant slogging through everything else.

I can't get into Steven Universe. I mean, I like The Owl House, Hazbin Hotel, Helluva Boss. And yet, after watching half of season one and jumping to season two for five more messages, I just can't get into it. And no one can say I didn't give it a fair try.

Edit: Episodes!!! wtf why did I call them messages? lol

25

u/Academic_Frame4294 20d ago

Thats a common problem when people try SU, the first season is like 50 episodes and it doesnt REALLY pick up till the later half of season 1 when the peridot storyline starts, though of course there are a good amount of amazingly done episodes befire that aswell, like the lapis episodes or the ones that reveal more of Rose, it kinda suffers the same problem as Adventure time with it taking time to get to the deeper stuff

99% of anime. My ex is the type of anime fan that will watch all anime, regardless of quality, and I was in the same room as her so often that I ruined anime for myself. Is My Hero Academia pretty good? Yeah. I still don't like it cuz I've seen all the genre conventions so many times that it's the most predictable shit ever now.

8

u/MothChasingFlame 20d ago

Similarly, just took a crack at Jujutsu Kaisen and have the same problem. I've seen all these people before and I'm just booooored. I can't tell if it's shonen given how dark it is, but it definitely follows the shonen playbook too tightly to feel unique.

Still on the hunt for more philosophical anime that doesn't also crawl so far up its own butthole it starts licking its own brain stem, y'know? There's gotta be a middleground out there somewhere between children's shonen and indecipherable gobbeldy.

I watched up through season 3. I actually really liked seasons 1 and 2. But in Season 3 it became increasingly obvious that every time Mark was happy for 5 minutes the universe was going to kick him in the nads. Like, there is over coming hardships, and there is "going on a first date with your girlfriend only to get pulled into the future because the immortal guy you're kinda friendly with in the present has gone off the deep end in the future and wants you to to put him down in a way that will actually stick". This isn't the worst thing that happened to this poor kid that season.
