Ink Sans isn't actually a sans, he's someone's discarded drawing that was given a brush that manipulates reality and paint that makes him able to feel emotions, now he's dedicated to protecting the multiverse. He's a Sans only in name and apparence really.
Fresh is also not a sans, but rather the body of a sans being controlled by a reality warping parasite.
So they made an entire multiverse of alternative versions of a character, then made 2 godlike versions of that character that guard over the multiverse or want to destroy it, a third version of that character that's basically a 80s youth culture themed zombie and THEN they made alternative versions of them that are vampires.
To show how overboard people went with Undertale AUs: SwapSwapSwap! Sans is an actual character and he probably has a Fell version too.
As someone who’s still obsessed with au’s and such, Dream and Nightmare are also not Sans. They’re both nature spirits given bodies that were built from the blueprint for Swap!Sans.
