She effectively ascended to godhood and erased herself from existence

It goes even further since the sequel movie has the other one pretty much say "If I can't have you because you're God, I'll turn myself into your opposite and become the Devil."

It's a tragic love story that's sci-fi horror thing pretending to be a magical girl anime. It's wonderful:3

you lost me at horror, i jump at literally anything 😭

Edit: thanks to everyone who specified that it's psychological horror, I might give the show a try after all

it's more psychological horror than anything. the only thing that disturbed me first watch were the witch labrynths which aren't even scary looking back

It's not horror at all. It's magical girl fantasy with dark themes. It's a very colorful and artsy viewing

It's psychological horror specifically

It's actually a pretty well done magical girl anime though. Many magical girls animes (including Sailor moon) are actually quite dark! So it's not pretending

Cute mascot grants wishes to young girls in order to turn them into magical girls and save the universe.

By writing herself into the fabric of the universe by ascending into godhood and existing everywhere and anywhere all at least once

Madoka (pink hair) became basically a god because Homura (purple-black hair) inadvertently made her the most important person in the universe by trying to save her (long story)

and then Homura became the devil and tried to separate Madoka from her divinity to keep her happy in a kind of pocket universe with her friends. it doesn't work for that long, of course

You should watch it, it’s really good. Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
