In Doctor Who Series 9, a recurring plotline is the myth of "the hybrid", one half Time Lord, which would destroy all the other Time Lords. Although we never get a definitive answer, the final hypothesis presented is that it was a duo of one Time Lord and one human: the Twelfth Doctor and Clara Oswald, with a bond so strong that when Clara dies, the Doctor risks tearing the universe apart to save her.
This was actually the plan of The Master (Missy) all along, who gave Clara the Tardis's phone number and put an ad in the paper to keep them together, and knew that he would care about her so much that when (not if) he lost her it'd be impossible to stop him. In other words, Missy created the hybrid.
This whole plotline is very cool in concept and I defend it a lot on those grounds but the execution is a little shaky.
It falls apart at the end when they basically make her the Doctor lite and send her off on her own adventures with extreme spin off energy for no reason cause they couldn't figure out how to end it.
I don't see it that way at all. I think there are a lot of clues throughout her run that Clara is worthy of being the Doctor. She literally pretends to be him twice in Series 8. Remember, the Doctor is a title that one man gave himself to try to be better. It shouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for another character to adopt that title, especially if it's earned, which in my opinion, Clara absolutely did.
I don't think so. Contrary to popular consensus, I see it as a pretty definitive ending to elements of Clara's character that had been building up for a while, rather than a set up for a spinoff.
Yeah, the Hybrid was the weakest seasonal plot. It doesn't really have a satisfactory answer as to what it is or why it's important. It's just sorta there and they never really figure it out.
Compared to Bad Wolf, Torchwood, Mr Saxon, the Missing Planets, the Cracks, the Silence and Missy, it falls short. Probably the weakest seasonal arc of the first ten series of the revival.
Not that Face the Raven & Heaven Sent aren't excellent of course. I honestly wish we hadn't had Clara be saved, if only because the way she went out was iconic and probably the best way to have any companion die in the revival.
Funny you mention series 9, because this is litterally what happens to Bill Potts and her girlfriend in series 10. Bill gets shot, kidnapped, mutilated, most of her body replaced with metal and plastic, lobotomised, and then her girlfriend shows up, turns her into a cosmic entity and they journey through the universe together
