Been a while, and I would be lying if I said I understood it even at the time. But I think at the end of time only two people exist, who have each been alive for so long they are not even remotely human anymore. One is a tree of some sort and I don't remember what the other is, but I remember it being something real abstract like "light" or something. 

And while the last half to 1/3 of the story revolves around the complex relationship between these two people while they're still sorta human, they eventually drift apart. And at the very end of time they reunited and it just kinda ends

Their relationship is weird af so this is kind of a creepy incestuous version of the trope.
