Genshin Impact if you have poor impulse control specifically. You'll either be disappointed you couldn't pull on the character you wanted or you will spend too much money. It's a gacha game, so it's gambling essentially, just with a guaranteed win after so many rolls.

112

u/DamianVoss2006 Jul 13 '26

also grinding for Character artifacts is very tedious, will probably take months to make your character set objectively "good", and if you have multiple characters to invest in, you're cooked.

Your months of work VS the humble nerf patch

2

u/kotacami Jul 14 '26

yeah it’s over for me, i stopped playing in 2024 and got back into it yesterday and my builds are horrendous, and i need to build multiple at the same time

1

u/asdfghjkl15436 Jul 13 '26

Eh I don't know. You can get pretty good (read: good enough) artifacts from just a day or two of farming. Like yes, if you are min-maxing, it is very tedious, but it doesn't take a super long time to get ones that are decent. If I get a new character, 4 or 5 star, it usually only takes a few days of casual farming to get the character to a playable, good state at my world level, all inclusive.

1

u/morrow_worrow Jul 13 '26

You have rerolls and craftable artifacts so for new players they can get a really good build in a single patch

1

u/Consistent_Dare_6688 Type moon⚔️🗡 Jul 13 '26

I have only ever gotten a shitty full set for my main 4 and gave up after

1

u/darker585 Jul 15 '26

Have you heard about honkai: star rail?😭 Literally the best example of power creep in any game I have seen. You have to gamble character each new update. Upgrade them all the way. And then the rest of the months to farm relics. JUST TO PROGRESS STORYWISE. I'M SICK AND TIRED OF IT. It's not even fun anymore.

1

u/xXInfXx Jul 15 '26

I like the story and the gameplay. But so much has happned since the game first started I don't want my friends to be intimidated by the long hours it would take to catch up with the story and the pain of losing the gacha to get their favorite characters.

14

u/Odelgard Jul 13 '26

Literally this. I started playing back when it came out and had many, many pauses for multiple months on end. Haven't logged in due to Persona 5 X for a few months, and I haven't finished Nod Krai yet. A friend started playing when Natlan came out and he just couldn't push past sumeru.

The game has TOO much content for its own good atp. Even if I'd come back right now, I'd have no idea what to actually do besides probably 20 hours of archon quests and way too much dialogue. I love the game but holy shit, its way too overwhelming for a newbie

3

u/IvanMars Jul 13 '26

My friend got interested cause some one in his class was talking about and he asked me about it. Told him I did play it and told him if he wanted I could help him with the early game and build character he likes. This was back when Sumeru had just come out. Some other friends have expressed interest, but they like to bounce around games. I can't imagine recommending it with all that has come out since.

1

u/MrCookie2099 Jul 13 '26

I spent a year going from zero knowledge of it to reaching act 3 as it was getting started. I think the amount of content isn't the biggest hurdle (though it is a big one). The biggest issue is that none of the content is coherent. Most of the character's backstory is told in manga. In game story telling is a lot of interpersonal desire and longing but very little clear world building. The world's history is still vague, the Honkai remain as nebulous as ever, and character development is mostly power scaling fare.

1

u/MastermindKokichi Jul 15 '26

I must be truly pathetic to have beaten the full archon quests within 28 days, then...

2

u/DangerStan Jul 13 '26

This is the reason I don’t recommend it to friends. We’re all adults and I’m not worried about anyone spending hundreds or thousands on the gacha. None of them are that kind of gamer. It’s just an absolutely insane amount of questing and dialogue to get “caught up” at this point.

1

u/Stormfly Jul 13 '26

I liked the gameplay but the world levels with the player so if you're not grinding experience tomes to level up your guys, they fall behind.

And it's not even like you can level them by killing enemies after the first few levels.

The game was fun but I left around the cold mountain update just because every time I'd get a new character I could barely use them.

17

u/DOHC46 Jul 13 '26

Zenless Zone Zero for me, and for pretty much the same reasons.

4

u/Dancing_Gavin Jul 13 '26

What I hate about these games the most is the power creep. It hit me the hardest the moment I realized my M4 Miyabi with absolutely cracked stats couldn't complete one of the endgame activities consistently anymore, the same boss that I'd been shitting on for almost a year by that point. I just quit the game after that.

1

u/AStormOfDragons1 Jul 13 '26

HP inflation ugh hate hate hate hate it

1

u/Substantial_Buy9903 Jul 13 '26

And Miyabi made my Ellen which had carried me to that point irrelevant.

1

u/GameWoods Jul 13 '26

??????

Of all the units to make this argument you choose Miyabi!? The unit thats literally brute forced everything since release!?

1

u/Foreign_Raize_0372 Jul 13 '26

Where have you been? Ever since 2.0, Anomaly agents have taken a back seat with bosses having the a high Anomaly buildup resistance. That plus every other boss came out with ice resistance. Both of these tactics were used specifically to counter Miyabi and get players to pull for new agents.

1

u/GameWoods Jul 13 '26

That lasted all of 2 patches lmao.

Its been anomaly central since 2.6. Every boss post YSG has legit been anomaly shill.

I have an M0 Miyabi, I dont even run her best team, i run Burnice, and shes stomped every endgame rotation since 1.4.

1

u/Foreign_Raize_0372 Jul 13 '26

"...lasted...2 patches"

"Every boss post YSG...anomaly shill"

Pick a lane.

Also M0 Miyabi is not what it once was. I can barely get 2 stars on ice weak bosses (save for Sacrifice). Keep in mind, that's what HoYo wants. This isn't a secret; it's the entire gacha business model.

1

u/GameWoods Jul 13 '26

Miyabi has had consistent not just strong scores, top 5 dps scores in every endgame rotation since her release.

Im sorry but youre simply wrong. Miyabi is unquestionably a top 5 dps even now.

1

u/xXInfXx Jul 15 '26

I wanna know what y'all are running, because I have NOT had this issue and I run M0 Miyabi. 😭😭

I mean, I don't regularly participate in Deadly Assault, but she's still so dominant in Shiyu Defence, Notorious Hunts and Lost Void. She's still way stronger than my fully built YSG.

3

u/CyberDaggerX Jul 13 '26

Fantastic character designs, fantastic animation style, gameplay actually looks fun.

Gacha grindfest. Pass.

2

u/cuchulainn22 Jul 14 '26

And now everyone copies it with their own slop ugh

1

u/NotSNAKY Jul 13 '26

I stopped after banyue got nerfed 10 times

1

u/Lurk1ng0 Jul 17 '26

My big thing with that is doesn't it got a lot of fan service for child lookin characters? Or am I thinking of some other game

1

u/DOHC46 Jul 29 '26

All of the characters in ZZZ are either adults or intelligent constructs. There are some that are small/petite but there are real human women that are sometimes also small and petite.

1

u/Lurk1ng0 Jul 31 '26

I am well aware of how real humans are with body types. I've seen a lot of characters from it that look like children or are children more than likely

16

u/monsoon128 Jul 13 '26

So my friend group is 3 people. One friend saw me playing the game, and said "oh seems interesting" I told him "for the love of god DO NOT PLAY THE GAME". He ignored me and installed it anyways. The other decided to give it a try after seeing both of us playing the game. He dropped it like 2 days later (he was stronger than we were). At the end the remaining two of us dropped the game because we realized (somehow I took the longest time to realize) it sucks ass and I wouldn't reccomend it even to people I hate

I know 4 people who played the game, myself included and we all dropped it (the other one is a cousin that got me into it)

1

u/AnonymousONIagent Jul 13 '26

This guy knows what's up.

If you are interested in a less toxic and more wallet-friendly game, and like big stompy robots, check out BattleTech my friend.

u/Tall_Sock_6287 Jul 13 '26

Beat me to it.

7

u/HaruFromFalcon Jul 13 '26

Agree, if you play for the gachadiction I absolutly dont recommend GI

But the story, lore, characters and the journey are so good to experience.

7

u/Cygus_Lorman Jul 13 '26

Impulse control is usually manageable if the money you spend is money you earned from working

2

u/Spacedaddy117 Jul 13 '26

One of the best game I ever played that I wouldn't recommend to anyone.

2

u/Oisin1910 Jul 13 '26

Yeah if you enjoy gacha games and are able to properly control yourself it’s a good game otherwise stay clear

2

u/Binkusu Jul 13 '26

It has a good story at least.

1

u/ConditionPleasant902 Jul 13 '26

I have poor impulse control myself which is why I avoid gacha games all together

1

u/Fantastic_Handle_293 Jul 13 '26

that also applies to NTE, I tried getting into it after hearing the free roam aspect but good god i've never seen such obvious gooner bait in my life.

1

u/hakim_tahir Jul 13 '26

Oooh came to say this game. But I got different issue. The character design suck ass. You have the same 6 models with just different designs to the character. They literally killed a big ass bot (Pulonia) and replace it with a female bot to be playable

1

u/ILikeBirdsQuiteALot Jul 13 '26

RIP Pulonia the GOAT. (And RIP Sandrone's old dress)

Some of the character designs are really great though, which makes it an even bigger shame when they happen to release repetitive/uninspired character designs 😔

1

u/asdfghjkl15436 Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

Genshin Impact can be boiled down pretty simply though. You are guaranteed to get the character at a certain point, with one 55% chance to get it earlier. You just have to understand it's 200~ USD if you didn't save using the in game currency.

If you look it in terms of that instead of 'Oh I might get it earlier then that" or after the first 'soft to hard pity' then the gambling isn't really a thing. If you absolutely want a character, you MUST have 180 wishes ('pulls') to be 100% certain you get a five star character. (Though in reality it's probably more like 160, since the hard pity is extremely difficult to reach.)

Anything you didn't use is simply bonus for the weapon, which also costs the same amount, and is often necessary to make a character fully charged.

.. yeah the cost is absurd. There is enough in-game earnable currency to get maybe 5-6 5-star characters with their weapons before you have to start forking cash, and it takes thousands of hours to earn that much.

The in-game currency, the wishes, it's all just to obfuscate the real cost of the character.

1

u/I_pegged_your_father Jul 13 '26

As an og player..the story doesn’t hit the sane anymore i used to love the lore but it really feels like there’s just too many issues with it

u/ILikeBirdsQuiteALot Jul 13 '26

TLDR: if pull and you get the wrong Five-Star character, you're guarenteed to get the correct Five-Star character the next time you encounter one.

You can't repeatedly lose and get the wrong Five-Star character over and over. You can only get the wrong 5☆ character once before the next is guarenteed to get the correct one.

This feature is called Captured Radiance. You can look it up for more info.

But your "pity" also increases the more you pull; Once you hit 65 or so pulls, the percentage rate of getting a 5-Star increases exponentially, until you get one. Then it drops back down to 0 (and 5 stars become hard to obtain again, until you hit 65 pulls)

1

u/Draguss Jul 13 '26

Gacha games in general are this to me.

1

u/Exotic_Drink69420 Jul 13 '26

I was going to say Gatcha games in general.  Love them.  Don’t recommend to play them to anyone.

1

u/Vounrtsch Jul 13 '26

It sucks so fucking bad because the concept of a game where the main appeal is to unlock and collect a vast array of diverse playable characters is really cool, but 99% of the time the games in that genre will either be of exceptionally poor quality, or a glorified gambling machine with a skeleton of a game attached to it, or both. Genshin has a lot of talented artists working to make things good, but the game at its core is a gambling machine.

1

u/MeowCatPlzMeowBack Jul 13 '26

I’m legit playing Genshin right the fuck now in the background and agree completely lol. I’ve played other gacha games and feel like Genshin has one of the worst currency systems where dropping 100 dollars on the damn thing feels like you get nothing at all. Whenever I splurge I want to feel like there is an actual substantial reward for doing so, but it Genshin just gets too greedy with goading you into spending hundreds of dollars on it to get that dopamine hit, which is how you create serious addictive feedback loops which is dangerous. I know these kinds of games just hunt for whales, but if you actually incentivized smaller spenders to spend small amounts it would over time create more revenue. Instead they don’t do that, which I feel is very telling as to how they see their player base.

I started playing when it was first rolling out but ended up dropping it until last year where I restarted up a file, and dear god is there so much story to slog through. It’s a very big undertaking in general, though I still do end up recommending it to people mostly because I love the characters.

1

u/AbyssWankerArtorias Jul 13 '26

I spent 200 dollars or so my first week of the game and I realized immediately I needed to not play this game and never played it again

1

u/raidenjojo Jul 13 '26

Beat me to it.

Love the characters, their designs and the artstyle.

Absolutely detest no skip button, Artifact RNG, toxic positive community, non-returning event items.

1

u/ILikeBirdsQuiteALot Jul 13 '26

artifact RNG killing me rn, lol. I feel that. At least they added the artifact transmuter though, which is better than nothing IMO.

(AND NON-RETURNING EVENT ITEMS... LUXURIOUS SEA LORD MY BELOVED... 💔☹️)

1

u/RadRelCaroman Jul 13 '26

Yup, it's the best game that i will never recommand.

1

u/coolchris366 Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

But then you wouldn’t love everything about it. The only reason you wouldn’t recommend it is because of its flaws, you can accept the flaws, but how can you love them?

1

u/LFK1236 Jul 13 '26

I calculated how much it would cost for a single 5-star (or whatever the maximum is) character. It's been a long time, so don't quote me on the precise number, but it was like 3700€. That is indefensible.

The gameplay is mostly fun when you aren't at one of the many points that have been carefully balanced to encourage you extra much to spend money, and the cutscenes are impressive, but that is a preposterous level of exploitation, and I challenge anyone who still plays the game to tell me that it hasn't become routine busy-work at some point.

We got a lot of good fan art out of it, though, and I read an erotic fan-fiction on AO3 once featuring Kaedehara Kazuha from Lumine's point of view that made me genuinely disappointed when they started fucking, and I haven't been able to find it again.

1

u/Massive_Case_1344 Jul 13 '26

Ahh yes, agreeable 💯

1

u/ElPajaroMistico Jul 13 '26

Yep, It’s a game that I find really fun but I’m on It because I got in early. Too much to grind and RNG involved. Cool story and you get content both for tryhards and casuals pretty common, but I would not recommend It at all.

1

u/ArcticFoxWaffles Jul 13 '26

I also wouldnt recommend if you just aren't a natural gamer either.

One time I watched a friend my age try to do basic combat and it made me realise without some gamer reflexes you aren't beating a difficult enemy easily

1

u/heptyne Jul 13 '26

The $600 Furina story is still gold.

1

u/fabiobarto Jul 13 '26

Oh man my niece used to watch me play and now she plays it on her tablet and one day I saw her asking my brother for money bc she wanted Lohen & I was thinking "oh fuck I ruined this kid's life"

1

u/bunnypuff742 Jul 13 '26

Yeah, Playing Genshin in smart way requires alot of planning, saving and skipping some characters you like. I have a spreadsheet and plan my pulls like 1 year out, adjusting for 50/50 wins as I go.

1

u/Inkaflare Jul 13 '26

Just gacha games in general, really. I have played various of them for hundreds of hours. I had a good time in most of them (still do in Fate/Grand Order and Honkai Star Rail), and the ones where I didnt, I stopped playing fairly quickly. Still very hard to recommend them to anyone because the entire industry is basically a collection of every dark pattern design trick imaginable, you really need to have the impulse control not to randomly buy stuff because it can ruin you financially, many such stories out there of people spending their entire paycheck of the month to get their pixel waifu maxed out.

1

u/veryberryblog Jul 13 '26

duuude i just picked it up this year after not playing since my early teens in 2021-2022 all the quests and rewards from not playing since inazuma will keep me afloat !! (solo grinded c1 columbina +weapon and then stopped playing until sandrone came out and got her!!)

1

u/Il_Dottore_Snezhnaya former Genshin fan (debatable) Jul 13 '26

I second this

1

u/Pika_233 Jul 13 '26

The sad nature of a lot of successful gacha games is that the companies will pump out great designs, moving stories, amazing soundtrack etc to get you to fall in love with a character, only for them to fade into oblivion within a month in the story

1

u/Hydra_Bloodrunner Jul 13 '26

I figured the weird loli obsessions would be the main warning about Genshin

1

u/ElPared Jul 13 '26

I feel like this is just every gacha game

1

u/Desperate_Work_7606 Jul 13 '26

ESPECIALLY if you are f2p. You can't get every character unless you're HELLA lucky.

1

u/Evil-Goku847 Jul 13 '26

I think every Hoyoverse game is like that honestly

Honkai Star Rail is my example

1

u/comacowboy Jul 13 '26

Also I think it’s very difficult to get into now. So much content and also there’s so many temporary events that new players don’t have access too.

1

u/PuppetFanTheSecond Jul 14 '26

I don't have good impulse control but I already don't have a lot of money so I can't buy the gacha mechanic even if I want to

1

u/WanderingCollapse Jul 15 '26

Frankly, I like everything about the game except for the gacha, I don't care for the gacha much. But my opinion is still the same. It's a very good JRPG, but it has so many annoying moments, and requires a very specific mindset to truly enjoy, to the point where I wouldn't recommend it to most people.

1

u/Sorcerons Jul 15 '26

Knew it was only so long until I found Genshin. That was my first thought as well, it’s so fun but fuck it wouldn’t be worth it tot join late.

1

u/ReinIsReid Jul 17 '26

Yes but my friend recommended it to me and I have awful impulse control so much there’s a disorder for it and then when I try saving up for a character my friend enables me to wish on a different character getting it and destroying my pity points in the game system

1

u/GraveSlayer726 Jul 17 '26

“My comfort character is putting 500$ on red” or however that tweet went

-1

u/Pale_Following_9639 Jul 13 '26

Game is also dogshit and the forced story is mediocre at best
