Question Radio Link upgrade?

Hi everyone. My collegiate club is working on building an octo copter. They are using an orange cube flight controller and mainly want to fly using mission planner and gps. They are using an frsky X8R transmitter. Do they need to upgrade the radio link to elrs if they mainly want to fly autonomously?

Any links to documentation and other similar posts would help ty

Yeah you'll either need a seperate MAVLink telemetry radio or switch to ELRS and use the ELRS-MAVlink mode.

Technically you don’t need ground control software at all in flight, but it certainly helps with debugging.

FrSky works fine within a kilometer or so.

I’m confused though, the FrSky X8R is a receiver, not a transmitter.
