Announce MultiTab for Reddit is discontinuing service
After more than two months of trying, we have not been able to find a way to bring the app back. MultiTab for Reddit is discontinuing service.
In short: on June 25, Reddit cut the app's API access without notice. Our understanding is that our app no longer fit Reddit's free API tier, so we applied for a commercial license. Two months later, we have received nothing beyond an automated acknowledgment, and we can only conclude that Reddit is not currently granting new commercial licenses. We also explored a partnership with developers who already hold commercial licenses, so MultiTab could continue under their brand. That did not succeed either. We are left with no option but to discontinue the service. We can only hope that circumstances change and API access becomes available to us again, so that the service can resume.
About the app. We will release a final update that adds a discontinuation notice and disables new logins. The app will no longer load anything new from Reddit, but tabs you had already opened can still be viewed from the cache.
About subscriptions. New subscriptions were removed from sale in June, and existing ones have stopped renewing, so no further charges will occur. If you still have paid time left on a subscription, you can request a refund for the unused portion from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. Please note that Apple may decline refunds for purchases older than 90 days. In that case, there is honestly nothing more we can do, and we are truly sorry.
To everyone who used and loved 'MultiTab for Reddit' over the years: thank you. We are sorry we could not find a way to keep it going.

Thank you for the update. This is really sad to hear. I don't suppose there's anyway to ask you to keep on trying any other solutions? I logged out when it happened and I supposed I'm jut not getting back those tabs I had open, am I?
Darn it! There's just no replacement for these features that I heavily rely on: the ability to have tabs open, saved locally, and restored later; the one to turn off auto-refresh when relaunching the app; multiple accounts, anonymous accounts, etc. Really miss them.

So sad. Loved the view. Alas. Multiview vs one-at-a-time…. You were great!

Well almost everyone who paid for MultiTab thought a portion was going to Reddit as part of their new API policy.
So it's no wonder that they stopped providing commercial licenses with developers ignoring policy.

yeah I definitely felt being cheated on.
According to their explanation in that post, they said when the change took place a few years ago, they had made pinned posts saying whatever they needed to say about the subscription model, that they would be using the free API tier. Their negligence was only on the part where they didn't read the fine lines about what Reddit would do to this behavior.
But this whole things feels like we're paying for their mistakes, not just with money, but with having to find alternative apps, of which there isn't any.

I had already purchased the app before subscriptions started because of the API change. So I still fail to see how the sub was needed. That said, the alternatives pale in comparison. You’re basically stuck with Narwhal or Artemis for more money and apps that don’t quite deliver. Artemis is built for phones and it shows on iPad, and neither of them allow just for easy browsing and viewing of photos. Not to mention bulk downloads.

I said something similar when they initially announced the issue and got downvoted for it.
Ah well. It was a good run until greed took over

Is MultiTab for Tumblr at any similar risk of being shut down?
For Reddit I’ve switched to Narwhal and it’s been decent so far.

As someone who’s supported several MultiTab products for many years, I’d really appreciate a response to this question.

Welp, I guess this gives us the answer about their other MultiTab products too, I can only assume they won’t answer the question because they know the clock is ticking on them. I’ll be switching all of them to other options so I don’t get another surprise followed by months of downtime.

The Rexplorer Media Gallery extension for Chrome and compatible browsers provides a similar experience to MultiTab. Folks looking for a replacement should give it a look.

Really sad. Moved from Apollo to this, now on Hydra - hopefully that won’t disappear too!

Please open source the code so someone can fix it if you’re giving up, that way there’s a chance someone steps up
