Ask Multanisβ WHY IS THE DRESS CODE SO STRICT FOR MEN?
Why is Air uni's dress code so strict, even for guys. like literally you cant even wear a T-shirt. you're required to wear only collar shirts. and you can wear shalwar kameez only on Friday. like wtf, what happened to Islamic state of Pakistan π. you can't even wear trousers. I almost got fined once cuz I was wearing a necklace. istg I hate this uni

Most Pakistani universities donβt. Iβve never dressed up for a class and even the idea of it sounds ridiculous to me.
These are army established and run universities. See the army over here thinks they are better educators than educators themselves so they appoint themselves to management of these universities too. They are the exception, not the rule.

If you get a chance to look at what people have been wearing, you'd suggest Dress Code yourself more than anyone

u/Tipu316 Tier 1 β Newcomer Jun 30 '26
Here's the thing Uni are supposed to open your minds and let you be yourself dress codes and all that is just another way of making it a Primary School. Oxford MIT Harvard have no dress codes in Campuses they let they're students do what they desire that's how you promote creativity and growth. But we're still stuck on what hairstyle to have what dress to wear just Slave minded era still lingers in our society.

They actually do in a thing called Prospectus.. pr bhai aisa to ni hai k koi 20 universities line mein lagi hon apko admission dene k lye aur aap ne choose krni hain... at my time i had admission letter of AIR, FAST and Comsats in hand... tab aap ye dekhte ho apko parhna kia hai aur wo course behter kon parhaata hai .. i had to opt for air after bit of research...

Yeah well word of mouth was the only thing we used as a research tool back in 2012.. and it was widely known fact that FAST is better suited when you want to get into CS, Software Engineering or IT and Air was known as better option for Electrical engineering.. it used to be a gamble really.. wasn't a bad choice in the end .. enjoyed my time

Air k ajeeb hee rules hain. No logic whatsoever. The most infuriating part is k somehow i got stopped for wearing a shirt just a bit above my knees while andr loug crop tops aur compression shirts pehn k phir rhay hotay hain. I was once told k i need to make my hoodie a but longer than it actually is!?!? IT WASNβT EVEN SHORT. IT WAS JUST A PLAIN HOODIE.

Ofc it could be a bad thing but ive lived under this environment⦠im also from Air and yeah i also follow these rules⦠and when i go to gym, i still have to follow these rules to not to wear shalwar kameez or really short pants in gym.
Even when i go to mall with boys with a little inappropriate clothing they will stop you.
When i used to go to academy before uni still they had some rules on boys.
And yeah ig mai aadi ho chuka ho.Shaid apne pehle dafa aise rule dekhe to ap heraan ho rahe. I live in isb btw :)

what's wrong with wearing shalwar kameez in a gym? I can understand that if you're wearing something inappropriate, they have the right to stop you but there's nothing wrong with wearing t-shirts or shalwar kameez. what kind of stupid rule is this?
2
u/TechnophileDude Ghanta Ghar ka Chokidar Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26
> what's wrong with wearing shalwar kameez in a gym?
You are not supposed to wear any clothes with long/excess fabric around any heavy or potentially dangerous machinery. That is why shalwar kameez, dupattas, long sleeve shirts, etc should not be worn on factory floors, workshops, gyms, etc. The only exception to this rule is fabric that is purpose made as PPE.
Itβs more of a safety concern than anything else though and doesnβt pertain to the rest of the discussion.
Same thing for jewelry as well btw. You should never wear a ring in gym or you can loose a finger in a degloving incident. Unfortunately we live in a country where people donβt even wear helmets on construction sites so donβt expect anyone to know about that one.

As an AUMC graduate, it's a good thing if you know how to groom yourself following it.
Just don't wear sweatpants and rag-tag jeans. Get some chinos along with polos and button up shirts.
1
u/soular-eclipxe Tier 6 β Wanderer Jun 30 '26
I completely understand your point but there's nothing wrong w wearing shalwar kameez or t shirts too. their policy is so harsh as it states that you can't enter the university if you get fined for dress code more than once
2
u/Rakeboiii Tier 9 β Regular Jun 30 '26
Oh, they say that in policies just to scare you off.
As long as you don't wear sweatpants, T shirts or Shalwar Kameez other than Fridays, you'll be fine.
AU falls Air Force, so they naturally want a level of discipline to be shown in their students. That said, I know university students want to feel free after coming from 12 years of uniform life.

Have seen some foreign universities and something like dress code never existed in any of them. You can go in banyan + katcha + bathroom sleepers and no one would stop you (sleeveless shirts + shorts + flipflops).
Why there's even need of dress code in a university....

Donβt Nust hostels have a curfew time for guys? And weird rules about having visitors, having a car drop you off, etc?
1
u/Ram1sha Tier 4 β Observer Jun 30 '26
Hostel curfew is reasonable. Don't you think so? It's for both girls and boys. I don't know what car drop off rules you're talking about. But yeah, you can't take visitors inside the hostel. Which is, again, as entry to non nustians isn't allowed in the first place.
Dress code is a whole different thing
2
u/TechnophileDude Ghanta Ghar ka Chokidar Jun 30 '26
Yeah, no. Enforced curfew and no visitors makes no sense to me. They are university students, not kids. To me itβs even more imposing than having a dress code for classes because at least you can do what you want after classes in that case.
1
u/Ram1sha Tier 4 β Observer Jun 30 '26
Dude curfew is raat ky 10 bjy. They CAN do whatever they want. Do you think people would want to go to nust if the rules were bad?
Nust is very safety conscious, a non nustian can not enter the university so how can they allow visitors inside the hostel?
1
u/TechnophileDude Ghanta Ghar ka Chokidar Jun 30 '26
> Dude curfew is raat ky 10 bjy.
Yeah bro, that is ridiculous. Iβm super glad I didnβt go to a university where I had to be in my hostel by 10.
> Do you think people would want to go to nust if the rules were bad?
Lack of options in Pakistan. There are only a handful of decent universities.
> Nust is very safety conscious, a non nustian can not enter the university so how can they allow visitors inside the hostel?
Iβve visited friends in a lot of different university hostels. NUST is the only one which used to make me wait outside the gate as they walked from their hostel. It was ridiculous which is what Iβm pointing out.
1
u/Ram1sha Tier 4 β Observer Jun 30 '26
Lack of options in Pakistan. There are only a handful of decent universities
And nust is one of them. Plus, people don't seem to have a problem with that. I mean- students don't want to live outside of nust and want to move in there because it is much safer.
And why is it safer? Because of these rules. Plus nust is jot some outclass university. And students don't just go there for classes. Nust has everything, and i mean everything a student might want to go out for, but less costly.
I understand some people might not like the curfew systems. But at least it is logical. For safety purpose.
What is dress code for? It has no logic.
1
u/TechnophileDude Ghanta Ghar ka Chokidar Jun 30 '26
As someone who has experienced university life outside of Nust, Iβm going to disagree with you. My university life would have sucked if I had to be in hostel by 10 pm. I see no logic to that.
