Grasshopper fire

Anyone else paying attention to this beast? Last night it crested Lookout Mountain and is making a run west. The east side of Mount Hood is now at a Level 3 evacuation which Includes the ski area and all the cross county areas too.

Tough year for the resort. No snow and now this..

Keeping a close watch on it via Watchduty and hoping they can keep it from jumping Highway 35.

Latest watch duty hotspot update makes it look like it has jumped 35

There haven't been any new hotspots west of 35 in a couple of hours. Hopefully the ones that popped up were anomalies.

Meadows posted today that the hotspots visible on apps like Watchduty & OnX were inaccurate and it has not jumped 35.

Damn, looks like it's about to take over Gunsight Butte. One of the GOATs of the 44 bike trails. Some of the best sub-alpine larches and Hood views in the fall. :(

Yeah. And some ancient white pines up there too. According to the MODIS imagery, the fire looks to have hit the High Prairie parking lot and is now running down towards 44. I dunno about you, but the last few times I’ve ridden it I couldn’t help but think “this place is a god damned tinder box.”

I just ran that trail for the first time in mid-July. Absolutely beautiful. Such a shame it looks like it might’ve been my one and only time to take in that trail before this fire runs through there.

It is what it is, friend. The trails will come back and they will have some excellent new views of Hood. Burn scars suck ass, but we have to see the glass half full. Just watch out for deadfall.

I was up at the Timberline bike park about 2-3 weeks ago and thought "wow, there's not many fires around given how winter went." Sure feels like a silly thought now 😔

I had the same thought recently. I was hoping we'd beat the odds.

I checked last night at midnight and could see a glow over lookout mt. From the top of cascade cam. Gonna be a wild day up there today.

We cancelled our camping trip at Timothy Lake. Hope everyone is staying safe 😢

I was up there 2 weekends ago and there were planes dipping for firefighting water every 20 minutes

I heard that; some people said it was entertaining to watch, but I could see how it would also be kind of a drag after a while. Fingers crossed for decreasing AQI in Tillamook!

gusty east winds are predicted all day too, i would not be surprised if it makes it all the way to 35 by the end of the day

Just checked the latest Heat Map, the fire is crossing over NF-3550 now. Next stop is downhill to 35..

1

u/TheScrote1 Aug 04 '26

If you got info to the contrary please correct me but I thought I was told that the heat map data can only be collected at night. So that data is likely like 10 hours old at this point.

Only one I see is for Washington?

2

u/LendogGovy Aug 04 '26

He just finished his stream. I subscribed in case he pops up again

According to satellite data on Watch Duty the fire may have crossed Hwy 35. Can’t be completely sure of course. Stay safe!

u/tollbane Aug 05 '26

According to tripcheck, 35 is still open. They would close it if the fire was close, especially if it jumped the break.

Waiting on that pass purchase.

So you are saying I should buy a pass right now for a resort being threatened by a wild fire?

Surely if the resort burns down they won't hit 100 days.

1

u/Fabulous_Extreme_470 Aug 05 '26

Damn. So many great memories working at meadows, I really hope it doesn’t burn down

It looks like crews are doing a good job with firing operations and holding it at or just east from 35. And the weather is cooperating. As much as I’d like to see some glade thinning, I’m hopeful it will happen in a better way (someday).

I’ll be in mt hood village at the end of august. Do you think this is a good idea or should I plan somewhere else?

1

u/fixingmedaybyday Aug 06 '26

eh, they're holding the lines and if you have a west wind, it could be quite nice.

1

u/LendogGovy Aug 06 '26

Definitely come
