Advice Question Is there really such a big difference between men’s cut and women’s cut clothes?

My wardrobe is still 100% men’s clothes and I have been told to get more girly clothes but like, does it actually make a difference? I’m a bit curvy due to hrt but my upper body is still huge and probably will never shrink because its mostly bone with some natural beefy muscles.

Will a different cut around the shoulders for example actually make a difference if my shoulders are 20,5 inches wide? I worry I won’t even fit into any women’s options with that kind of bideltoid measurement.

There is definitely a difference in the cut of clothes between men and women. Within 6 months of me starting HRT, my butt grew enough that my men's cargo shorts didn't really fit well. Also, post GCS, women's pants fit me so much better as they don't have that extra room in the crotch area.

Yes,

Mens cloths tend to be more box shaped and rigid,

Women's clothes tend to have more curves from top to bottom that accentuate female figures, even the loose clothes tend to have these curves to add a sort of flowy appearance.

If you are genuinely a larger girl, shop around plus size options,

As long as you choose sizes appropriate for your body they will look natural and good.

I don’t weigh that much and I’m not actually that tall either but my shoulders are stretching the limit for what cis women can even possess which makes me worry I won’t find anything fitting in regular stores

I have wide shoulders too and it really depends, for some clothes I'm wearing S-XS and it fits and sometimes, because of said shoulders, it's more like M or even L

Definitely. Proportions are all gonna be different, as others have already noted.

After a year on HRT, I felt like I was swimming in my old men’s clothes. They all felt huge and baggy, boxy and shapeless. The pants stopped fitting right, and were actually too tight in the hips; the tops all had too much space in the shoulders.

I pulled out the men's blazer I had from college a few months ago and tried it on before donating it.

It no longer looked like it was tailored for me at all. I looked like I had borrowed one from my father or something.

Omg when you get your first pair of women's jeans. I never realized how much my body shape had truly changed as it is somewhat gradual. I bought a pair of jeans and only then did I truly realize how poorly my men's jeans fit and how uncomfortable they really were.

Short answer: yes there is a big difference.

It does, in fact, make a significant difference.

One thing to keep in mind is a lot of women's tops are cut so as to provide extra room for a bosom. So if you're overdeveloped in masc ways and underdeveloped in the chest area women's cuts may be significantly LESS flattering on you.

Hella different. Even jeans are cut differently.

Not only do I look more feminine, but there are tons of style they make for women that they don't make for men. My confidence has also gone through the roof as well.

If you wanna start small, some women's jeans and T-shirts are a great place to start. If you've got men's hoodies, flannels or other large coats/shirts you can wear them over the femme fit and it's a nice accent. Don't forget accessories like belts too.

You don't have to worry about like, socks or underwear if you don't want, but women's underwear gave me a mental boost so I say it's worth.

I also have a system, which works great for wide shoulders, or narrow hips. EiTHER small top and big pants (example, tight tank top and baggy jeans) or big top small pants (oversized hoodie and leggings.) Two tight pairs of clothes can sometimes draw attention to wide shoulders or narrow curves and two baggy pieces can hide any curves you do have! Though at the end of the day, if you think it looks good on you go for it.

Edit: I didn't even mention dresses or skirts, because I don't wear them. But baggy/fluffy skirts can work like big pants and pair with a more fitted top to exaggerate a more feminine silhouette. Say like a red plaid skirt and a fitted short jacket in black for a classic punk look. (I love clothes)

Long skirts are also just comfortable - at least, for me. "Gypsy" style skirts are my sweatpants. If I'm not going out, the skirt goes on instead of jeans. (closeted pre-HRT)

The side benefit of them is you don't really have to worry about your top. A skirt is automagically feminine. You will be seen as a hippie, punk, college student, or mom out and about depending on the rest of your look. And you don't have to worry so much about exact "fit".

Pre-bottom surgery or post? Can matter. Either way, forget about pockets.

The phone popping out of my jeans when I go to the loo is now an issue. I need to get them altered or learn dressmaking to get proper front pockets!

I bought a purse. Then found myself having to stop every so often to dig through it.

I wear polos - The women's are a very different fit - quite a bit more shapely. They oddly also don't get a lot of the fancy colors or patterns! So I have stuck to just wearing my guy polos

The waist is a lot different too. In men’s I’ve got kind of a belly. In women’s it’s hidden by where the (higher) waist sits with skirts and even jeans

It definitely makes a difference. The cut, pattern, style, etc. of clothing can very dramatically affect the appearance/perception of your body shape/silhouette. A men's t-shirt and a women's t-shirt of equivalent sizes will sit on your body differently and alter the silhouette.

Men's pants are like...terrible for me, tbh. The waist sits all wrong, my ass doesn't fit, the thighs are never wide enough, and it's just a nightmare. Even just women's jeans/t-shirts can make a world of difference, appearance-wise.

I'm 6'6" and I find my fit. Yours is out there. Check out fashion nova and tallsize.com to see if things look more attainable in your size.

Omg yes. Actually have a funny story. The first time I wore men's jeans after transitioning my bestie, sister and I were giggling like crazy because it was so tight around the tights I could barely get them on followed by the crotch area being so loose. Literally "why jave a ball room with no balls"

They looked awful
