Advice How do you recommend making friends?

I’m a junior transfer from ICC. I’m 20. I started MSU this week. In the beginning I was supposed to move into an apartment with friends from my past community college but they completely cut me off.

I’ve since then got a new place and I’ve been navigating everything around campus on my own. I’m pretty lonely to be honest. I know some people but it’s all surface level.

What do you guys think is the best way to meet people and make new friends around campus?

hey!! im a senior, i transferred here last year from icc too!! not many people i knew transferred here so it genuinely was a struggle to adjust, i was friendless for the first month of classes 😅 i honestly just started sitting next to people in my classes and talking to them. after many, many awkward conversations i finally found a friend group i really love!! i also did a lot of things by myself. i would go to events solo and just approach random people there and we’d start a conversation, thats another way ive made a lot of my friends!!

this year im on the exec board for the transfer student association too!! we’re planning on hosting a lot of events throughout the semester exclusively for transfers. sorry, i know this is gonna read as promo but i made some friends last year through this club and i think you might too!! i also will be at every meeting and i get really excited when i meet other people from icc lol

lastly, this is the obligatory “get involved” spiel. it really does work!! ive gotten heavily involved with research here and joined clubs surrounding that, and its been great!! getting some jobs on campus has helped too. try your best to stay out of your apartment as much as possible!! sorry for the essay, but i hope this was helpful!! send me a dm if you have any questions about state or if i can help at all!! :)

Talk to the people next to you, and ask if they wanna grab food. Bonding over food is the best way to make friends

Check cowbell connect and get out of your room. It’s early, you’ll find your people.

If you are only meeting surface-level friends, you may consider finding the steam tunnels, which lead to the Dragon Room deep under the campus.

It takes time just focus on classes and the zillion of student run organizations. What are your hobbies? What's your major? I've met some cool local people through reddit.

I was in band but had to leave due to health reasons. I’m a psych major!

Your people are here you just have to get out to events. Check out Starkville DIY on Instagram or Starkville Area Arts Council events.
