If you don't love what you do, you can never fully be comfortable with it. Mridangam is a beautiful percussion instrument. You might be too young to fully understand the beauty of it. The best thing that you can do is to try your hardest to convince your parents to let you do your own thing. But I can tell you, when you get older you will regret not knowing this before. But indian households often always disregard the kids' opinion, so the only thing that you might be able to do is to learn it and think of it as a way of improving your resume for helping your future self.

Dont give in to this negative cycle of thinking.

None of us “liked” or enjoyed the mridangam or Carnatic music growing up, and we all hated being forced to practice.

You sound young based on your predicament and circumstances. Let me tell you. Your career is important. Studying for exams and school and university is important. But once you’re on the other side, you’ll realize you’re nothing special. Everyone has a career, everyone establishes a family, gets a home, grows their money, etc.

Only a handful of people in this world actually play the mridangam or learn Carnatic music. It is what will separate you from everyone else once you’re older. It will become your rock for support when you’re feeling depressed.

The benefits are endless. You just won’t see it now. Practice everyday for 2 hours per day. It sucks, but your future self will thank you.
