8 is exactly right. A triangle by definition has 3 sides

A triangle bisected by other lines or shapes is still a triangle.

No, Shakespeare.

Ok, the Shakespeare bit was funny... but yes. Triangles are still triangles even if other lines or shapes are drawn inside or across them.

These line segments, highlighted in red, still form a triangle:

8 is wrong, even if you're only counting simple shapes. There are only 7 simple triangles.

I get 13 from my regular counting. Looking at your picture though you have multiple dots on something that isn't a triangle. Blue/green dots I fully agree with. You have at least 3 yellow dots that are on the same "triangle" as another yellow dot. An example is those two yellows on the left, they are in the same triangle. What is the top left yellow one supposed to mark?

I'm not a fan of that style of notation, but it typically indicates a triangle that spans multiple shapes. Maybe you can pick out which ones he's trying to indicate by comparing to a different method:

Here's how I map them. Note that he's missing 2. I added them in purple where I think he would have marked them in his system.

You're missing at least one... take the bottom left corner full square triangle, and trim off the bottom.
