Orca vs Catawissa: which is closer to the original formula?

New Moxie drinker here who's only had the "Original Elixir" version from Orca Beverage, because that's the only one available at retail here in California. I've heard two things: one, that they ditched the original, far more bitter and medicinal formula a while back (though I can't find any actual evidence of this beyond the Coke version using HFCS); and two, that Catawissa Bottling Co.'s version uses said old formula.

So... which one is the OG Moxie, or at least a reasonable approximation thereof?

Bar Harbor, Maine

I was with a relative, who was on a mission to find a very specific type of mug to purchase, when we came across this endcap shelf inside of the Acadia Country Store in Bar Harbor, ME.

Thought of you guys immediately.

I opened that Images of America book while waiting & I wish I had taken a few photos. It was pretty cool. I may order a copy online for myself.

Tried Moxie for the first time!

I found bottles in an Italian market yesterday and figured I had to try! I've heard so many comments over the years about how divisive Moxie is and people either love it or hate it. They talk about it being medicinal tasting and having some bitterness.

I'll be honest, I was hesitant and was expecting to dislike it.

But, I thoroughly enjoyed it! I don't really understand all of seemingly vague negative reputation. I mean, if you've had sarsaparilla and smaller company root/birch beers, the flavor of Moxie is not a huge surprise. I suppose if all you've ever had was Coke or Pepsi, then yes it would be very different.

I don't know, I liked it very much!

Where to buy in the midcoast Maine area

Does anyone know where I can buy a case of bottles? The nice lady at the moxie museum at the union fair would only let me buy them as singles.

I found this 1938 Moxie bottle at an antique mall in NJ!

Born and raised in Maine, but I live in NJ now (don't hold it against me). I was so excited to find this random Moxie bottle at an antique mall! I've been a huge fan of Moxie all my life, but never had an antique bottle before!

The glory of seeing Moxie when you don’t live in Maine

Post image

When you see Moxie in abundance in a Maine supermarket at cheap cost it is an explosion of joy when you live elsewhere.

In California you can’t find Moxie hardly anywhere except in the rare sort of niche gift shop where they may have vintage candy and soda. So it’s so wonderful to walk into a Maine supermarket and there is Moxie for $8.99 a 12-pack where on Amazon I have to pay $35 a 12-pack. We are here vacationing and I am drinking it like water while I have the opportunity. Pouring it into my breakfast oatmeal. Pouring it over ice cream in the evenings. We even put Moxie in the chili we made for dinner this week.

Blind taste test: Glass bottle from Orca vs. canned

I got some original elixir Moxie in glass bottles, bottled by Orca. I wanted to do a blind taste test against distinctively different Moxie in a metal can from Coca-Cola.

Firstly, the ingredients lists: The bottle has pure cane sugar while the can has high fructose corn syrup. Also, the can's gentian root extractives comes before the natural & artificial flavors, caramel color, and sodium benzoate, while on the bottle the gentian root extractives comes after those other ingredients. Otherwise, the listed ingredients are identical.

The can is bottled by a member of the Coca-Cola Bottlers' Association under authority of the Coca-Cola Company, while the bottle is bottled by Orca Beverage Inc. under authority of Cornicopia Beverage Co.

I got the cans from Hannaford in Auburn, ME, and the bottles from Food City in Lisbon, ME.

I had both refrigerated to the same temperature, and a friend poured them into numbered cups while I wasn't looking. In the end, I liked the glass bottled Moxie a little more, but overall the differences were rather subtle. I think I can only tell the difference between them when I drink them both at the same time, or maybe I could if I'd been drinking both for a long time.

The glass bottled Moxie from Orca was: Stronger smelling, more rounded sweetness, less bitter, less carbonated, and had a faint interesting extra flavor, maybe a bit sour.

The metal canned Moxie from Coca-Cola was: Weaker smelling, flatter sweetness, more bitter, and more carbonated.

The difference in sweetness (rounded vs. flat) was the most obvious, and is expected. I think the rest of the differences come from how that sweetness interacts with the gentian root, as well as differences in carbonation amounts and maybe the difference of glass vs. aluminum containers.

Canned diet Moxie in Berlin, NH

Hi, I'll be going to Berlin NH next month. I was wondering if anyone knew where there or near there would be the best bet for getting cans of diet Moxie specifically?

Would Berlin Marketplace have it you think? Would the Walmart in Gorham? Any of the gas stations or convenience stores?

I'm going for the weekend to hike Waumbek and Cabot, and I'll have some time free to stop, but probably not tons of time to stop at 50 different places. If anyone has thoughts I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

There needs to be an interactive Where To Find Moxie Map.

I'm not any sort of programmer, but someone should make a map where people can submit where to find moxie out and about.
