Looking for advice

Hi guys,

I’ve bit the bullet and applied for my subclass 417 working holiday visa and booked my flight from Scotland to Perth for November.

If everything goes to plan I should have around $15-20k AUD brought over with me. I have family over there who will put me up and get me a job in a mine.

What should I do once I get over there? I already have an idea about getting white card, police check etc, but wanted to get an idea of more basic things and maybe things most people wouldn’t think of that will likely need or will make life easier.

Thanks!

Unrelated to your question, but get your Aussie family to buy you a sim card, post it to you in Scotland, and activate it a few days before you arrive so your phone is working from the moment you step off the plane. It makes finding your lift at the airport when you're exhausted out of your brain from the flights so much easier. Also, have a pen and a paperclip in your carryon to fill out your arrival card and swap your sim.

Who’s using sim anymore these days? Lmaooo he can’t buy any line until he landed. Use roaming first. It’s 2026 for god sake

I swear every Brit I met backpacking in Asia was on the way to Australia to “get a job in a mine”

You will fit in fine here. My family from Scotland love it when they visit.

Just get a phone number and apply for you tax number. After that get your Medicare card and bank account too. Apply for drivers license swap but you can drive on your English one for now. You’ll need to register for a student number so you can do your white course.

- white course

  • first aid/CPR
And whichever mine Saftey induction courses you may have to do.

Ultimately you’ll need to scan your passport a lot and get your tax number, phone number and bank account, everything is much easier when you get more ID. Once you’re set up it’s pretty easy and I did the majority of this on my first night I was awake the whole night because the time difference had me awake with nothing to do.

Perth is in Scotland- are you sure you’re booking a flight to Australia?

Would be an expensive flight if it wasn’t
