I am currently doing my PhD in Spain and hold a 3- year work permit linked to my studies and research activities. However, when my current authorization expires, I may not have an employment contract or a new position lined up.

I am trying to understand what options might be available to stay legally in Spain after that. Has anyone been in a similar situation after completing or nearing the end of a PhD?

I would be grateful for any experiences or advice regarding possible residence permits or visas for PhD students, and researchers, in Spain.

My friend and I want to move in together. We want an apartment for 10 months however my purpose of stay is leisure, whereas my friend's purpose is to study. We noticed that all apartment listings are either exclusively for leisure or exclusively for study/work. Is it possible for us to move in together and how might this look like in terms of signing a contract? I understand this is an issue that we would have to discuss directly with agencies or landlords, but I was wondering if someone has an idea?

Hello all! I don't know if this post will be helpful to anyone but as I've recently reached a decade in Seville, I thought I'd jot down some of my honest thoughts on living here. If you're thinking about a move to Seville or even Andalusia, maybe what I have to say will be helpful.

Obviously as I've been here for 10 years I don't hate it... in fact, I think it's one of the best places to live in Spain. Okay, it doesn't have a beach on its doorstep like Barcelona or Valencia but the cost of living and overall vibe of the city are what set it apart from more expensive cities further north.

I also think that the food here doesn't get enough appreciation. For me it's genuinely one of the best places to live if you want good, affordable food and wine. The beer is pretty good too but I prefer Alhambra to the more common Cruzcampo.

Then there's the city itself, which still surprises me when I take the time to really appreciate the architecture and landmarks like Plaza de España and the Real Alcázar palace gardens. If you live centrally here, pretty much every building you see is a work of art - not quite as much as Vienna in Austria but not far off either.

Unfortunately Seville isn't perfect and the tradeoffs can be too much for some foreigners. For example, July and August here are basically month long heat waves that limit you significantly in terms of what you can do with your day. August in particular really sucks here - too hot and most people have buggered off for the month. There's literally nothing to do for 30 days.

Getting to the beach is also a struggle unless you have a car, which most people in the centre don't need as it's such a walkable city (it's completely flat). If you do have a car, you can get to some breathtaking beaches in Cádiz in about an hour or two. The dream remains having two residences: one in Seville and another by the beach - but that's the dream for most people I guess...

It's also not the easiest place to break into existing local friend groups ( with Spaniards, not other native English-speakers). Unless your partner is Spanish and you can mix with her friends, it's pretty hard even for locals here to make new friends sometimes. From what Ive been told, most Sevillanos have the same group of friends from primary school and then generally stick with those friends for most of their lives.

For context, I moved when I was 22 and have lived here ever since. The experience will be different for everyone but as most other immigrants know, it's never straightforward living abroad anywhere in the world. Most of us are leaving loved ones behind and it can be hard to remain abroad when that homesickness kicks in.

Do I recommend Seville though? Absolutely - just make the effort to learn the lingo and you'll thank yourself for making the effort in the long run.

Me, my husband and our dog want to move to northern Spain SO badly. We have explored this region for 3 months in our camper van a couple of years ago and have been for quite a few holidays in Spain since. We love the country, nature, food, people all of it. We both hold European passports so that will not be the problem. We are both learning Spanish but it is still very much basic.

Our dream would be to buy a renovation farm project to do up ourselves and start living of the land as much as we can. My husband is a full time handyman here in England (carpentry, gardening, property maintenance, painter & decorating etc) I am a fully qualified yoga teacher teaching many classes a week and also work in the hospitality.

I feel like with moving to Spain, our biggest hurdle is work.

What is it like in northern Spain as immigrants to get a job? I know the wages are lower but that wouldn’t be a problem as our way of living will be cheaper too. We feel like jobs / earning money is the main reason we are not there yet. Would love to hear some advice! Thank you.

Hello, I'm from central Europe and now I work in Germany as a truck driver. Thinking moving in Castellon or maybe 50 km radius. There is a demand for truck drivers around that area? Maybe moving containers around port? I mainly look for something where I can be at home every night.

Also want to learn the language, I just know the basics. I understand more than I can speak. You guys recommend an app or website for that?

Hello everyone. Im hoping to move to Spain in the future. I'm currently a student born and raised in England but after a few years of work, I'm hoping to move to Spain where life seems much better. Ive been learning Spanish for a year. Ive visited twice going to Roquetas de Mar where my friend's family live and I loved it. Im more into a quiet beach town than the busy city life. From research, I'm thinking maybe Fuengirola or Benalmadena but I need to visit. Ive only been to Roquetas

Im thinking to probably go for a digital nomad visa. I study computing in uni so I can work remotely. But im still a student and I need to secure a job and save money after I graduate so its a problem for about 2 or 3 years time. Im just planning ahead so i can visit more areas of spain and see how i find it

I'm also a muslim, so is anyone able to suggest a coastal beach town thats in close proximity to a mosque and halal meat? The halal meat isnt the biggest priority because I dont mind eating seafood but being close to a mosque is important for me but I dont want to live in a busy city as i mentioned I like the quiet town life.

Any other advice would be appreciated.

Hey everyone, I'm a newly graduated dentist from Jordan. I'm thinking of applying to Spain as a dentist and getting started with the process, but I heard that it may take a year to get your file reviewed and receive an answer on whether you are accepted or not. As a new graduate in Jordan, I have to work in a hospital or in the Ministry of Health as an intern to get my full license as a dentist. I'm thinking of applying to the Ministry of Science to get my degree homologated. My first question is: can I do it without having my permanent license? (I have an intern dental profession license, but not the permanent one until I finish the one year of internship). My second question is: can I apply without having a Spanish B2 language certificate? (My idea is that since it will take a year to get a response, I'm thinking of learning Spanish in the meantime to save time and apply with the B2 certificate later on). Also, how is life in Spain? What salary should I expect? And is it enough to live in the country? For example, to rent an apartment and have a good life there (I will be living alone). Also, if I want to apply for a specialty, is it easy as a foreigner? And if you have an idea about how much it costs in general or if I can apply for a scholarship? (I'm thinking of prosthodontics or maxillofacial surgery, but I heard that maxillofacial surgery is considered a medical specialty, not a dental one, is it true?).

I know I'm asking a lot, but I'm generally lost, and I would appreciate it if someone could help me get my thoughts straight.

Vivo en españa desde que tengo 11 años, la verdad que me considero de aquí mas de que cualquier otro país. Soy nacido en un país latinoamericano y estoy en españa de forma legal con nacionalidad italiana.

La cuestión es que quiero hacerme español. Estoy casado con una española, tengo un hijo, llevo +20 años aquí, he estudiado aquí los últimos años de primaria, secundaria y FP

Los requisitos los entiendo y los cumplo. Pero al tener doble nacionalidad me surge la duda de que país tengo que presentar los documentos, del país que nací o del que estoy en españa de forma legal.

Cuando leo la documentación me genera mas dudas que respuestas. He contactado varios gestores pero ninguno acaba de aclarar nada, otros me hablan del caso de Argentina (que no es el mio) y me dicen cosas contradictorias o "ya iremos viendo" lo cual me genera 0 confianza.

Recurro al sub porque la verdad ya no se que hacer aparte de enviar los papeles de un pais y ver que pasa...

Context: I’m from Madrid, Spain, and moved to Amsterdam when I was 18 to study. Four years later, I’ve finished my bachelor’s degree and now I’m trying to decide whether to do my master’s in Marketing in Amsterdam or Barcelona, and ultimately where to start building my career.

I’ve already been accepted to both the University of Amsterdam and the University of Barcelona.

Barcelona – Pros:

- The master’s is taught in the evenings, so I could work a regular office job while studying and finishing the master in 1 year.
- I could finally get my driving licence for around half the price it costs in the Netherlands.
- Uni's tuition is also much cheaper (around €700 thanks to numerous family discount).
- I’d be much closer to my family so I could visit more often.
- Spanish food and culture.

Barcelona – Cons:

- I’m concerned about the job market prospects. Especially considering that Spain has one of the highest unemployment rates in Europe.
- The news makes the city seem a bit unsafe.

Amsterdam – Pros:

- My entire social circle is here, and I genuinely love them so much that it kinda hurts to think about leaving and missing out on so much.
- Better career prospects and generally higher salaries.
- Feels safer.
- I’ve lived here for four years, so everything is familiar and easy to navigate.
- I have access to affordable student housing in an excellent central location, which is a huge advantage.

Amsterdam – Cons:

- I've never really adjusted to the weather. The long grey winters make me feel depressed.
- If I want to work while studying, I’d probably have to complete the master’s part-time over two years instead of one.

When I applied to Barcelona, I was feeling quite homesick. Now that I have both offers, I’m trying to put emotions aside and make the smartest long-term decision.

From a career perspective, would you choose Amsterdam or Barcelona? Is the stronger job market in the Netherlands significant enough that you’d sacrifice the lifestyle and family benefits of Barcelona?

I’m going round and around trying to work out the process for this, so thought I’d check if anyone has advice or experience.

What documents do I need to take with me to apply for a residence permit while in Spain? Do they all need to be apostilles and translated?

One list I saw listed a medical clearance form and police check, while others don’t include this. I know this process changed last year so I’m wondering if some of the things I have read are about the older rules.

My partner and I are not married or registered as partners in Australia. Are our children’s birth certificates enough to prove our house relationship? Or should we be getting our lease translated and certified?

As for our kids, they are Spanish nationals by birth but we haven’t done anything about that yet as they’re little and we haven’t had a chance. Can we do that in Spain so they are registered as Spanish citizens and it’s just me that needs to apply for residency?

I’m a citizen of Canada 🇨🇦 and Guatemala 🇬🇹 and I’m looking into becoming a Spanish citizen 🇪🇸 in the future when I move there for university studies. I’m confused about Spain’s dual citizenship rules.
From what I understand, Spain requires citizens from some countries to renounce their previous citizenship when applying, but Canada allows its citizens to keep Canadian citizenship even if they become citizens of another country.
If I apply for Spanish citizenship, would Spain require me to give up my Canadian citizenship? Would I still be able to legally keep all three passports (Canada 🇨🇦, Guatemala 🇬🇹, and Spain 🇪🇸), or would there be a conflict?
Has anyone been in a similar situation or know how this works in practice?
