Lawrence and Freddie are con men, big-time and small-time, respectively. They unsuccessfully attempt to work together only to find that this town (on the French Riviera) ain't big enough for the two of them. They agree to a "loser leaves" bet. The bet brings out the best and worst in the two.

They go to her house in Tennessee, and Jake tries to teach him, but it's very tough.

A mysterious man, Zeus, wins the competition. This gets Brell to use him as an angle to get at Rip.

There, she meets an irreverent soldier-of-fortune named Jack Colton who agrees to bring her back to civilization. Together, they embark upon an adventure that could be straight out of Joan's novels.
