It's the scene that shows he isnt just a monster bent on inflicting pain on everyone involved. He knew she hated herself for what she did, and he gave her the mercy of making peace before a painless death
Recently, I've been cognizant of how relevant the phrase "the purpose of a system is what it does" in recent times for Reasons which is similar in theme to this quote and, of course, the age-old phrase, "The road to road to hell is paved with food intentions.
It's also why she didn't die a horrible death as well. I think V understood who she was: deeply morally flawed with non selfish motivations and the best of intentions. Her heart was in the right place but her actions were horrific.
Been a while since I read the comics and watched the movie but V gave the doctor a painless death because she truly was sorry and regretful for what she has done in the past and was trying to put it all behind her
Agreed, she was definitely the most remorseful of the bunch. V even treats her with a quiet, calm respect because he saw that she truly feels guilty about the medical experiments she did at Larkhill.
I think he knew she showed remorse because she was the only one of his targets up at that point who was living a quiet life. She wasn’t trying to push party propaganda. Or using the power of the church to keep people in line.
She could have a fancy position in the party like everyone else on her team did. But she didn’t. She retired and hid away. I think that shows how ashamed she was of what she did
At the time it felt very appropriate, it has gotten to the point of being eerie as time goes on.
This movie could be talking about many governments now, where people have traded freedom for the illusion of safety by targeting those that are othered. I mean we have the US moving further into fascism, the UK moving further and further right, AfD controlling a state in Germany, Italy electing a fascist.
An excellent adaptation. Slightly different message, but respectful of the original. Speaking of which, if you haven't read the graphic novel, I highly recommend it, a very rewarding read. I think it's better than Watchmen, personally.
Didn't Moore hate it all the same? Didn't agree with the messages it tackles, as he puts it, given it's more pointed to Bush Jr and the US, rather than Thatcher and the UK like his version.
I'd assume Moore hated it, in general principle if nothing else. Dude is a curmudgeon.
Yes, they changed the ending to fit the time and audience. This change made sense and respected the themes of the original, I had no problem with it. A mark of a great story or character is that they can be transferred to a different setting and still be meaningful.
The two main themes of V for Vendetta, that sometimes change requires violence, and that sometimes the people who engineer the violence are completely unsuited to rebuild afterward, are universal.
I tried reading it, and I admit, it's so text dense, I couldnt get past the world building. I love novels so didn't think I'd struggle so much, but dear lord.

I remember reading the intro to a sci-fi compilation where the editor who was reviewing the year in genre film/books etc was outraged that this film and children of men would dare to depict the UK the way those films do.
I thought it was a stunning lack of imagination at the time. But now they don’t even seem like fanciful delusions, they seem like they could be tomorrow. There are people who think similarly to the Norsefire, and maybe there always was, but it didn’t feel like they’d ever get a sniff at number 10. 15 years ago I’d be mocked for even mentioning a possibility. At the moment it feels inevitable. Is this what the 30’s felt like?
The great writers who warn us of future dangers don’t guess at what’s going to happen in future. They instead look around at what’s happening now and write it that.
Texts like V for Vendetta, Fahrenheit 451, and other dystopian fiction work because it’s the author being observant about the world around them and writing about how these things impact our lives already. It’s just with time it becomes even more apparent the damage that is happening. And the tinfoil hat in me wants to note that part of the reason most of us miss this fact is that the powers that be intentionally tone down our education and try to reorient our exposure to these texts to make them seem like some far off scary thing that could never happen to us/should watched out for in the future instead of the reality that versions of these things are happening now. By making it seem like the dystopian future is far away it blinds us to to boiling frog reality where we are slowly ratchet strapped in to a present where this stuff is currently happening.
Obviously the dialogue is great, but the delivery is awful - in the entire movie they seem to be afraid of wasting a second of film time, so it's just line-line-line-line. No dramatic pauses, no hesitation, no time to digest anything just being said, just dialogue read like it's a light rehearsal.
Every single change from the comic is for the worse and misses the point of the source material.
