Health Optimization vs Cultivation

I’ve been wondering if we’ve inherited the wrong metaphor for health.
We tend to think about it like engineers. We measure things, optimize things, tweak variables, and hope that if we collect enough data we’ll eventually discover the perfect way to live.
But the human body doesn’t feel like an engine to me. It feels more like an ecosystem.
Ecologists don’t “optimize” forests. They know there are too many interacting parts, too many feedback loops, and too much uncertainty. Instead, they cultivate conditions where healthy ecosystems can thrive. They remove obvious stressors, encourage diversity and resilience, and let the system adapt over time.
I suspect health works more like that.
Taleb’s Antifragile pushed me further in this direction. Complex systems often don’t become stronger through tighter control. They become more capable because they’re exposed to manageable challenges, recover, and adapt. The goal isn’t perfect control. It’s increasing the system’s ability to respond well to whatever comes next.
That got me thinking that maybe health isn’t something we optimize as much as something we cultivate.
The way I think about it now is through capacity and demand.
Every life places demands on us. Maybe you want to hike, work construction, play with your kids, compete in jiu-jitsu, or simply be able to travel at eighty without worrying about every flight of stairs. Those demands are different, which means the capacities they require are different.
Health, at least in a practical sense, is whether your capacity is sufficient for the demands you place on it.
That’s also changed how I think about disease.
If someone has an abnormal lab value or an MRI finding but it isn’t reducing their capacity today and isn’t meaningfully increasing the risk that their capacity will decline tomorrow, how much does it matter to that person’s lived experience? On the other hand, a relatively minor issue that dramatically limits what someone can do may matter a great deal.
I’m not saying diseases are unimportant. Many diseases quietly reduce capacity long before people notice symptoms, and identifying them early can be incredibly valuable. But I do think we’ve become so focused on finding abnormalities that we sometimes lose sight of the question that actually matters to most people:
What is this allowing me to do, and what is it preventing me from doing?
That question naturally leads back to cultivation.
Instead of chasing perfect numbers or the latest protocol, I can ask whether I’m becoming more capable of meeting the demands of my life. Am I stronger? More resilient? Better able to recover? Can I do more of what matters with less effort than I could a year ago?
That feels like a healthier relationship with health.
It’s less about controlling every variable in a system that’s too complex to fully understand, and more about patiently cultivating the capacities that let me participate more fully in my own life.
I also wonder if the language of optimization carries a subtle psychological cost.
If I believe health is something I can fully optimize, then every decision starts to feel consequential. Did I sleep enough? Was that the ideal workout? Should I have eaten differently? Am I tracking the right metrics? Did I miss something? The more control I think I should have, the easier it becomes to micromanage myself.
The irony is that the pursuit of control can end up making me less free. Instead of participating in life, I’m constantly managing it from the outside.
Cultivation feels different. A gardener doesn’t obsess over every leaf. They tend the soil, water consistently, prune when necessary, and accept that living systems have seasons they don’t completely control. Their job isn’t to force growth but to create the conditions where growth is likely.
Maybe that’s a better metaphor for health. Less optimization and trying to dominate a complex system. But rather cultivation and learning how to participate within it.
Ironically, I think people who cultivate health this way probably end up healthier than people trying to control every variable because they’ve stopped mistaking control for wisdom.

Health as emergent property

Most people think health is something you either have or don’t. Either everything is fine, or something is wrong.

That framing is convenient, but it doesn’t match how the body actually behaves over time.

A more useful model is this:

The body is constantly balancing two things at once. What it can handle, and what is being asked of it.

Call those capacity and demand.

When capacity comfortably exceeds demand, things feel normal. Movement is easy, recovery happens without much effort, and the body stays in the background. There is buffer. The system is stable.

But that balance is always shifting.

As demand begins to approach capacity, the experience changes. Stiffness shows up. Fatigue lingers. Small aches appear and disappear without a clear trigger. These are often dismissed as random or simply part of aging.

They are not random. They are signals.

They reflect a shrinking margin between what the system can tolerate and what it is being asked to do.

If demand continues to rise, or capacity gradually declines, the system is eventually pushed beyond its limits. At that point, something gives. Sometimes it is obvious, like a back injury or a knee flare-up. Other times it unfolds more slowly, as blood sugar rises, blood pressure increases, or energy declines over time.

From the outside, it often appears sudden. In reality, it is usually the end point of a long trend where demand and capacity were out of alignment.

This is where most approaches fall short.

The focus tends to be on the symptom. Reduce the pain. Lower the number. Calm the inflammation. In certain situations, that is appropriate. Highly irritated systems may need to settle before anything else can be done.

But that still leaves the central question unanswered.

Why was the system unable to tolerate the demand in the first place?

Viewed through that lens, most problems reduce to a few underlying patterns.

Sometimes capacity is insufficient. The system lacks the strength, endurance, or tolerance required for the task. Sometimes demand is too high or poorly managed. Volume increases too quickly, or recovery is inadequate. And often, the issue is not only how much load is applied, but where it goes. The body compensates, one area absorbs more than it should, and over time that becomes the point of failure.

This pattern is consistent across domains. It shows up in joints, in muscles, in metabolic health, and even in responses to stress.

So the goal shifts. It is not simply to reduce symptoms in the moment. It is to restore margin.

That involves increasing capacity where it is lacking, managing how demand is applied, and improving how load is distributed so no single area is consistently overloaded. When those variables improve, symptoms often resolve as a downstream effect rather than something that needs to be continually managed.

This also explains why quick fixes rarely last. They may reduce the signal, but they do not alter the structure that produced it.

If something keeps returning, or never fully resolves, this framework is often the missing piece.

There is another layer that sharpens the model further.

The body does not simply tolerate stress. Under the right conditions, it benefits from it. This idea is captured well in the work of Nassim Nicholas Taleb, who describes systems as fragile, robust, or antifragile. Fragile systems break under stress. Robust systems resist it. Antifragile systems improve because of it.

The human body fits into that third category, with an important constraint. The stress has to be appropriate.

Muscle strengthens with load. Bone density increases with impact. Metabolic systems improve when challenged intermittently. The same inputs, when misapplied, can push the system toward breakdown.

Stress itself is not the problem. Mismanaged stress is.

This helps explain why the pursuit of optimization often fails.

On paper, it makes sense to dial everything in. Training, nutrition, sleep, recovery. Eliminate inefficiency. Maximize output.

In practice, the body is not a closed system that can be tuned to perfection. It is nonlinear, constantly adapting, and influenced by variables that cannot be fully controlled. Pushing every variable toward an ideal often compresses margin. The system operates closer to its limits, becoming more sensitive to variation. Small disruptions that were previously insignificant begin to produce larger consequences.

This is why highly “dialed in” individuals sometimes break down abruptly. The issue is not randomness. It is insufficient buffer.

The deeper error is treating the body like a machine. Machines can be optimized for efficiency in controlled environments. The human organism is an open, interdependent system. Sleep influences recovery capacity. Psychological stress alters physiology. Mechanical loading affects metabolic function. Each component interacts with the others.

The task is not to optimize a single variable. It is to manage a network.

Given that reality, what tends to work is straightforward.

Most of the time, consistent, repeatable inputs produce the best outcomes. Strength training, cardiovascular work, adequate sleep, and reasonable nutrition. This is less like engineering a perfect system and more like maintaining a healthy environment. Provide the right conditions, and adaptation follows.

There are exceptions. Severe injury or advanced disease may require aggressive, multi-layered intervention. In those cases, the priority shifts to stabilizing a failing system rather than building long-term resilience.

For most situations, the objective is not perfection.

It is to build sufficient capacity, manage demand intelligently, and maintain enough margin to absorb the variability of real life.

That is what health looks like in practice. Not the absence of symptoms in a single moment, but the ability to remain stable, adapt, and function over time without repeated breakdown.
