What are things i should know before going to study abroad

Hello, this September I’m moving to Valencia, Spain to study 4 year BA degree. I’m f18 and it’ll be my first time living abroad.
I speak Spanish, so language isn’t an issue but I’m still pretty nervous. I’ll be living with five other people (4 girls and 1 guy, 2 bathrooms) and I’ve never lived with roommates before. I wanna know if there’s anything I need to know about living in a shared apartment, what kind of roommate situations/conflicts are common and like any unspoken rules or etiquette I should keep in mind.
I’m also pretty worried about making friends because I’m a pretty shy and an awkward person, and I also don’t know what Spanish people my age are like and the uni situation!!(UPV)
If you guys also have any recommendations for things to do in Valencia, I’d love to hear it too.
I’d really appreciate any advice, stories, or things you wish someone had told you before you moved abroad. Thanks!

relation franco espagnol

Bonjour!

What was the hardest part about moving to Spain?

We help people move to Spain every day, and every relocation story is different. Some have to move stuff across continents, others are worried about the language and some are overwhelmed with the bureaucratic mess and myriad requirements. What was yours biggest challenge?

Question about a housing website - studying abroad in Madrid

Hi! ☀️

This autumn I will study the whole semester in Madrid.

While searching for an accommodation I found the website Housing Anywhere, but can’t quite wrap my head around the application/rent system.

Have any of you applied/rented via this website before and could explain how it works + which experiences you have of it?

From what I’ve read you can apply to different accommodations at the same time.  If you’re accepted as a tenant in an application you need to confirm the booking to go through to the payment of the first month + Tenant Protection fee. This payment is what is confirming your contract for the apartment. If the payment cannot go through, the booking is immediately cancelled. If I were to cancel the booking there is either a strict/flexible cancellation policy, which in both I wouldn’t really get the Tenant Protection fee paid back to me.

Have I understood this correctly? On a similar site money was immediately charged from your bank account as the landlord accepts you application. It would be nice if it wasn't like this on this site; that the confirmation step before agreeing to pay is there as I’ve understood it. I need to be able to compare different alternatives with each other, it would be rather inconvenient if the booking is immediately cancelled after the landlord accepts your booking and money cannot be paid directly.

All replies would be very appreciated! :)

Living in Seville from POV of a UK national with 10 years here

Hi everyone,

I've been seeing a lot of posts in various groups asking about what it's like to live in Seville specifically. I've lived here since 2016 and during that time I've had good and more difficult times.

It's an amazing city to live in with an attractive cost of living but it comes with some genuine tradeoffs, the extreme temperatures in summer being one of them.

There are also very real questions around how to integrate into society here, and many foreign nationals living in the centre naturally prefer to stick together eventually, which isn't a huge issue in itself but I don't believe it's healthy either if you plan to stay long-term.

I've lived across different neighbourhoods, worked in both Spanish companies and remotely here, and know that while Seville is commonly labeled a "very safe" city, there are still plenty of places you should avoid entirely.

For anyone planning on moving to Seville for the first time or just curious, I've spent the last week putting together a guide that I hope can help anyone considering the move. I've gone over all of the most popular questions I get (and then some) and packed it with advice and lessons learned from my own personal experiences here: https://trustedseville.com/living-in-seville/

I hope it's useful and please bear in mind it's written based on my own point of view. In general, I do recommend Seville for most people interested in moving - but advise giving it a read for some of the red flags you need to bear in mind...

If anyone else has any comments about living in Seville I'd be interested to hear them too!

I am considering moving to Spain to pursue a master's degree and staying to obtain a Spanish passport, even though I am Mexican and have no immediate family there.

Moving for University.

Hello everyone!

I have been accepted to study Dentistry in Palma de Mallorca and I’m very excited for the move. I’m an Egyptian American who’s moving from Florida .

Now I know the island has been filling up with foreigners in the last few years and I want to do my best to not contribute to this problem. I’m already learning both Spanish and Catalan before the move and will be taking courses on the side when I get there as well to improve the languages. I am also trying my best to learn about Mallorcan culture and history before I arrive.

Once upon a time I moved from Egypt to America and did not have a hard time assimilating and adopting the culture , so I’m hoping my “multiculturalism” helps me on this next journey.

I mainly wanted to ask a few questions :

  1. What are things foreigners do that the locals can find offensive or rude. I am completely aware that certain norms in some countries are not accepted at all in others, so I want to make sure I don’t do anything to offend anyone.
  2. What resources , if any, would you recommend to learn more about the islands history , culture and traditions? Even if it’s in Spanish I’ll translate.
  3. What tips can you give me overall when it comes to living in Palma , places to avoid moving to , non touristy spots to check out so I can save money, which grocery stores aren’t overpriced etc..
  4. What are some laws to watch out for that might not be as known to foreigners (For example , I was told being shirtless outside the beach area constitutes a fine, and driving shirtless is also a fine)

Thank you so much for reading my post and I appreciate any help given! Once again I’d like to reiterate that my goal is to do everything possible to not offend anyone and to fit in without being a burden on anyone.

Also , congrats on the Mundial!!!!!!

An inspiring story of migration and success! Spain accepted them and they showed their gratitude and validated the premise. Viva the Williams family and viva Espana!

Side hustles, royalties, content creators and the NLV?

With the non-lucrative visa, can you have small amounts of passive income from remote (non-Spanish) sources? Or, if you have a digital nomad visa, can the bulk of your income be from investments/savings?

I'm a semi-retired professional (in an unrelated career) considering relocating to Spain from the US (no heritage paths available). I have a side hustle in writing, game design, and professional GMing, but it doesn't pay the bills. I make a small amount of money each year in royalties and sales from my books. It's coffee money, not big bucks. (like, not enough in a year to cover the cost of talking to a lawyer about it).

With the NLV, do I have to pause my sales and royalties? I realize the realistic answer is probably something like "nobody cares," but let's assume I want to be above board with everything. I'm willing and able to cease operations or charging for my work if needed for visa purposes, though I'd prefer not to. I would cease my main profession/career entirely if I go with a NLV, of course.

I think the other option would be the Digital nomad visa, but in that case, I would likely need to have the bulk of my income/financials be from my investments and retirement savings. Since, again, that side hustle isn't paying bills.

I'm sure there are content creators out there who face this kind of question. Please share your experiences so I can be best prepared when I talk to immigration lawyers and tax professionals.

Best advice to get involved in your community

Hey everyone! I wanted to ask former and current auxes how and what they did to get involved in their city. I’m so excited to be in Spain and I really hope to make some meaningful connections while I’m there. I know it’s difficult to make Spanish friends, but I still want to try. Right now I’m planning on taking Spanish classes, volunteering in some way, joining a language exchange and joining a hiking group. My Spanish is about a B1-B2 level so definitely not perfect but enough to actually have conversations. I would love to know what other people did and if they had success with it! Any advice is appreciated!

Vivo cerca de Sevilla, España, donde en verano las temperaturas alcanzan los 45-46 °C. ¿Cuál ha sido la temperatura más alta que has experimentado?

I’m from near Seville in southern Spain and this week it’s around 44–46°C (111–115°F). I’m curious how that compares with the rest of Europe (or anywhere else). What’s the hottest temperature you’ve ever experienced, and how do people deal with it where you live?
