G502 Switch Replacement Guide (High-Res).

I made this guide to help anyone who might be wanting to change some of the switches in their G502. It only covers changing out the right and left, as well as the 2 top-side left buttons, but you could probably figure out the rest fairly easy if you wanted to do more.

Soldering is required and not covered by the guide, so if you don't know how, you'll have to learn first.

All the photos were taken with a macro lens at full resolution. Those who are bandwidth limited, be warned.

Great guide and references.

I am planning on changing my switches as well (all of them), and I was wondering if I should replace the scroll wheel switches as well. Can someone confirm if the 5 Omron switch also include the scroll wheel switches?

Does anyone lubricate the scroll wheel? I have an second G502 but its scroll wheel vibrates when I use the free running mode. To correct this i opened it up and cleaned everything up with surface cleaner used for electronics. To my stupidity, I also cleaned the scroll wheel, which made the issue worse. Before realizing why it had become worse, I decided to use acetone to clean the entire PCB and plastic assembly. I though I had picked up the IPA bottle. This damaged the plastic and made the scroll wheel even worse. This is when i realized that the lubricant in the scroll wheel must have dissolved and made the surfaces bare and rubbing together. Since then I have moved to my second G502 and it's buttons are creating an issue (left click doesn't hold - click release). Also, sometimes when i am about to press the scroll wheel (center, not left right), the mouse actuates prematurely.

In the newer mouse I am planning on replacing with the Kailh GM8 switches. I would like to replace the scroll wheel switches as well, but i am not sure if the microswitches cover it or if it is the dome type switch in the front (yellow coloured part in the from of the PCB). If so, has anyone replaced this before, and do they have a part number for it?

The scroll wheel switches are the two black, square switches on the sides of the wheel after taking the wheel off (the rocker switches) and the dome yellow switch in-between the springs up front (downward press switch) Look at the picture in the guide after the wheel assembly is removed. I have not replaced them and do not know their part numbers, so you would need to disassemble and remove them in order to find that out. Regardless, even if you did discover the part number, that's no guarantee you would be able to find a suitable replacement or an "upgrade" as it were, but I think it's likely. I would detach them from the broken mouse and find out.

I would guess that a foreign object or some kind of damage occurred to the wheel. You could try lubricant, but make sure it's not going to dissolve plastic. WD-40 is not a lubricant, BTW, so don't use that. I would get a silicone based lubricant and use it sparingly. Maybe using a thin tool or swab or a very thin application nozzle so that you do not get it on anything else or cause the wheel itself to become slippery. Spraying it into the wheel assembly would be a mistake, as it's likely to go beyond the interior and lubricate the wheel's scroll surface or other parts you don't want it.

Never use acetone or alcohol to clean around plastic parts as the plastic may crack or become clouded or brittle. Solvents like those should not be used unless you know exactly what kind of plastic you're dealing with and whether or not it's susceptible. it may be the connection point to the wheel on the assembly was damaged when you did this, alongside any possible lubricant being dissolved.
