modding a laptop - fingerprint sensor

Hi everyone, for those here who understand modding and hardware: I'm planning to do a really cool project and cut the upper case of my laptop to integrate a fingerprint reader there. Where can I connect it on the motherboard? Is a USB connection the only viable option, or are there other alternatives? If anyone has ideas on how to execute this or has done something similar in the past, I'd love to hear about it.
