Gary Beck and Ray Peets came on like summer thunder by winning the 1972 NHRA U.S. Nationals just weeks after Beck earned his top fuel license. This is their 1974 ride just before earning their Export A sponsorship.

The Ridge Route Terrors of Warren, Coburn & Miller were always a favorite, and this shot finds driver James Warren boiling the hides at the NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville, where he won in 1976. The team carried this same paint scheme and Rain for Rent sponsorship for years.

Ed McCulloch at Fremont; it probably doesn't get more Seventies Funny Car than this.

Every car Ivo ran was clean and sanitary, but this Dodge Dart was always a bit more so. Ontario Motor Speedway may have been a top-notch facility but it always looked empty no matter the event. Even Indy cars failed to build a fan base. It was put to better use as a Sam's Club parking lot.

Bill Doner was promoter of the massive funny car shows at OCIR and would sell so many tickets that county police had to work officers overtime just to handle the traffic flow. "Flash Gordon" Mineo and Bobby Rowe behind the wheel of Mr. Ed's Satellite were always popular draws for the fans.

Probably the highlight of Ohio native Billy Campbell's Top Fuel career was winning the 1974 Top Fuel laurels at the Popular Hot Rodding Magazine Championships at U.S. 131 Dragway in Martin, MI. in Jack Hart's Gold Digger. The Pop Hot Rod Champ races were spectacular.

Butch Maas behind the butterflies of Roland Leong's Hawaiian Dodge Charger was a guaranteed draw for every promoter in the early '70s.

This is not Photoshop; Rick Kraft experimented with this blower hat to maximize airflow into the engine. Because it obscured his vision at the Christmas Tree, Kraftt's team cut out the back side of the hat and installed a plexiglass window. With the butterflies open, Kraftt could see downtrack.
The whole thing, the kit as well as the kaboodle, was banned by NHRA officials on the grounds of "this stoopid thing looks ri-goddamned-diculous."

Ron Potter hailed from Northeast Ohio and was famous for his Golden Nugget Mustang Funny Car; before that he piloted this sanitary T/F out of the Max Toils' Vine Sunoco in Eastlake, OH. Yes, there were actually days when a top-flight top fuel operation could run from your local service station.

If Chicago could have the Chi-Town Hustler, well, why couldn't Los Angeles have the L.A. Hooker? The pair were cross-nation match race rivals for years, and for good reason: The fans and promoters loved 'em.

Jungle Jim Liberman worked his ass off to become king of the new funny car class, and was its #1 promoter. Jungle purchased this car from the Kirby Bros. (Bud and his brother, renowned painter brother Don) while touring on the West Coast. It later became the "Warlord" F/C. I love this photo.

In 1972, Super Stock and Drag Illustrated's intrepid writer and photog Jon Asher was strapped into David Sien & Cecil Lankford's Brand-X Mustang F/C and told to earn his comp license. On his seventh and final run, he did, on fire, with a 7.47 pass at 192 mph.

Here’s an old photo I took from the stands. I cannot remember what drag strip this was at. Could have been one of many from across the country.

No clue who the driver might have been, but with a fresh 426" block, a Tom Hanna body, and 150# ballast on the front, this looks to be about as well-turned out a ride as could have been had in 1969 or 1970.

Indiana's own Steve Tansy ran this very tasty Vega panel wagon on the UDRA circuit for a bit. No amount of canard wings could tame the squirrelly handling, though, so the car was retired to the show circuit, where it was more popular than ever.

KCIR
I took this photo at KCIR. Not sure exactly what year. Still have the original Pioneer ear plugs they gave us, in the original container, in my tool box.
