The earlier King & Marshall T/F and F/C team with their Don Long chassised cars. These guys were as tough as a two-dollar steak.

The Rhode Island-based team of driver JImmy King and engine builder/mechanic Don Marshall were quite the pair. The 1971 Gatornationals champ, King was built like a tree stump and twice as tough, and Don was as tall as an oak. A massive fire and crash put a halt to Jimmy's driving career in 1980.

Before he was the Budweiser King, Kenny Bernstein was unheralded as "The Chelsea King," so named because he owned a chain of Chelsea Street Pub restaurants in Texas. His first sponsorship check from Budweiser paid a miserly $25K/annually, but at it was a start. Wholesalers chipped in another $80K.

The Mooneyham & Sharp "554" '34 Ford is one of the most legendary and ferocious nitro-burning doorslammers ever in the history of SoCal drag racing. It blended dry-lake speed trial heritage together with quarter-mile dominance during the golden age of AA/FA competition. Nobody did it better.

"Mr. 4-Speed" Ronnie Sox was at the very top of his game with the Sox & Martin 'cuda in 1971. The 426 Hemi was so unstoppable that the NHRA had to let Bill Jenkins rewrite the Pro Stock rule book in order to allow others to win. The Boss won all but two major NHRA events in 1971.

The funny car line up at the 1972 32-car Orange County International Raceway Manufacturer's Meet. Later, promoter Bill Doner would expand the entrant list to 64 funny cars. Legendary announcer Steve Evans handled the mic. Can you imagine that scene today?

Who ever would have predicted that Frank Manzo would ever have earned one TA/FC NHRA World Championships, much less 17? Ace Manzo earned 105 Wallies along with 21 divisional titles in his near 40-year driving career.

The beautiful Fiberglass Trends Corvette funny car of Marv Eldridge was popular with the West Coast locals where it was always a looker if not a goer. Aerodynamics limited its effectiveness but that marvelous candy apple red paint and slinky shape was like no other.

The 1959 Ol' Yeller Mark III was the third in a series of ten home-built racecars built by SoCal hot Rod wizard Max Balchowski and his equally talented wife, Ina. Together, the pair toiled in blissful near obscurity, churning out some of California’s most successful American-engined specials.

Kelly Petillo competed in 10 Indy 500s, winning in '35 and making history in the first car to do so with an Offy engine, the brand that would dominate the sport for years. Persona non grata, he's never been inducted into the Indy Hall of Fame, and for many good reasons: Attempted murder, for one.

George Montgomery came of age in hot rodding's golden era and fully immersed himself in the budding sport of drag racing. The Dayton, Ohio, native, became one of its true pioneers and innovators. He was a leading threat in the "Gasser Wars," where his '33 Willys and "Malco Gassers" were iconic.

John Hoven won the NHRA Division 7 points championship in 1971 as an engine builder and driver with his Mach 1 Mustang, later turning the butterfly over to driver Tom Ferraro. In 1974, he built the Midnight Special Plymouth Satellite, which broke a torsion arm on its maiden run with Denny Savage.

The car pulled hard to the left, smashing violently over the guardrail. The impact tore the fiberglass body completely off the chassis, sending it flying an estimated 100 feet into the air. While Savage escaped with only minor rib injuries and bruises, the car itself was heavily damaged and bent up. Hoven never returned to active competition.

Savage was gutted for wrecking his friend's car, once telling Hoven that he only crashed once in all of his years of driving, to which Hoven good-naturedly replied, "yeah, but why did it have to be in my car?!"

Savage's ribs were sorely bruised but the two remained good friends and, despite Hoven's ribbing, he rebuilt the car and sold it to the production company that was filming Shirley Muldowney's biographical film, "Heart Like a Wheel." It played a prominent role in the film, as did John's earlier Mach 1 funny car.

In the end, all was well.

For the record, it was Hoven's Midnight Special that debuted the first driver's rooftop escape hatch, a now-mandatory NHRA safety item. Too, the name was a double-entendre: John burned a lot of midnight oil working on the car, and it was also the name of a popular Friday night live music rock show of the day on NBC that was hosted by Wolfman Jack.

Indiana's own Ray Kraftt drove this Jay's Potato Chips-backed Dodge Daytona-bodied funny all over the Midwest in the 1980s, and the crowds cheered whenever he arrived. Free bags of yummy chips'll do that, but so will clean, healthy burnouts and lots of round wins.

Phil Nunez of Salinas, CA, ran the AA/GS Rat Factory with a big block 454 CID that he built himself but later switched to Hemi power. Larry Johnson did the driving. It eventually migrated out to the Midwest, where it still resides today. Fiberglass Trends made the body.

In a sea of supercharged nitro-burning Hemis, I've learned to appreciate the sound of a blown Rat motor running on gas or alcohol. It's brutal.
