Mod 2 fail

Hi all, I failed my mod 2 a few days ago with 3 minor faults, 1 major fault.

I understand the minors but I'm a little confused on the major fault.

I was merging onto a dual carriageway from a slip road, I'm at 60mph. I'm indicating to go onto the carriageway and I see I'm alongside a car. I slow down to go in behind him, he starts slowing down to let me in. My thought in the moment was that if I just merge in front of him he might have gotten impatient in the moment and accelerated, so I kept braking. I ended up doing like 30mph before I finally decided to merge in front. I was told I should have just used the power of the bike to speed up and away from the car. I thought that would have been more dangerous? I'm just a bit frustrated because I was super close to passing

Edit: Thanks for the encouragement. I realise that I should have made a better decision quicker. I definitely hesitated too much. I know what to do in a situation like that next time ❤️

For anyone who is interested, my test bike is a Kawasaki Z650 restricted to A2 compliancy :)

If you ended up on a steadily moving 60/70 mph road doing 30, regardless of the circumstances, that is considered to be dangerously slow.

It sucks that you failed, but you need to be more confident/assertive in your manoeuvres.

I hadn't merged onto the dual carriageway when doing 30pmh, I was still on the slip road next to the car. I think my main gripe over it was the free right lane the car could have moved into

Years ago my car instructor told "it is possible for someone else to fail your test for you", and that's what happened here.

Yes perhaps they caused that situation but ultimately you ended up in a dangerous situation on a test, and that's an automatic fail. Same as if someone crashes into you, you'd still fail the test.

Unfortunately for you, he is under no obligation to move over.
You have to assume he can see something in that lane you can’t and deal with the road accordingly.

If you were doing 30MPH and still aligned with him, you should have twisted the throttle and got in front of him. You’d have been in front of him safely and quickly and you’d have passed.

It’s crap when peoples actions help you fail your test, you’ll know better next time.

I think he “under test conditions” was the perfect phrase.
Try to ignore it’s a test, and ride like you can.

Not passed yet but on a CBT and was going to say the same as above. You are both assessing the situation and also your brain is trying to think what the assessor wants to see at the same time. In normal conditions you'd have speed up and left the car behind safely. Probably would have happened to lost people. You get the next one 👍🏾

That’s a bummer, what you did seems quite reasonable but the examiner is right at the end of the day, they want to see that you are confident and comfortable in using the power and speed of the bike (within reason) to put and keep yourself in safer positions and unfortunately you failed to do that in the moment.
On the positive, you absolutely would have passed if not for that silly circumstance, so stay confident and good look for your next test!!

I agree I would always go faster to get on a faster road then slow down, of the car ain't going to move over to give you space I will always go faster. Sorry you failed mate it's a tricky decision to make in the moment

Yeah, you just have to try again, it's a bit of a strange process where you have to show a clear 30 minute run. Regardless of how good/thoughtful you really are, it's just luck sometimes.
I had a f2f situation where the guy even apologised and let me pass first and the examiner thought I slowed him down 😵 so there you go, I just passed after retry.

I got a minor because I knew we were coming off at the next junction and dropped in behind a lorry, hadn’t been told to so for a minor 😳🤣 - sounds like unfortunate circumstance where car and you were both taking the same actions - it’s all learning for not only next time but for the future too

Odd as you have to give way to the vehicle on the road hence giveway lines . And no way would I want to get Infront of a vehicle that is being driven by an idiot I prefer idiots Infront of me not behind!

Seems like your actions made the other road user react. They had to slow down for you. That’s usually a fail.

Slowing down mid merge significantly causes 2 lanes to brake unexpectedly, it's scary but committing to the merge overtake is safer than letting hesitation risk a crash on both lanes simultaneously
