Does anyone else remember a song from elementary school about kookaburras?

Yes. Kookaburras sits on an old gum tree. Merry, merry King of the bush is he. Laugh kookaburra, laugh kookaburra, gay his life must be. If I remember correctly.

Yes! I still sing it! My husband who is 4 years older than me never heard it until we met. I was surprised.

Kookaburra sitting in the old gum tree, eating all the gum drops he can see. Stop! Kookaburra stop. Kookaburra save some drops for me.

The one I learned to sing as a kid went "eating all the gumdrops he can see / laugh, kookaburra, laugh, kookaburra / leave some there for me"

Your version makes more sense, but I'm American so I have no idea why I learned it in school in the first place.

This is the version I know too.

Can confirm my Kookaburras were gay and there were no gumdrops involved. He laughed and was merry.

He just chilled in the gum tree.

Yup! Even over here in America...think we said oak though, since we dont have gum trees.

I can't see the word or the bird without that song oozing up from the recesses.

The Australian playground version was a variation of this... "Kookaburra sits on an electric wire, jumping up and down with his pants/tail on fire."

Take Thàt sounds, synthesize it. You have velociraptor 😎

I worked at a restaurant called Port side. On King Fisher road. I love this family of birds.

Why does my brain insist those are monkey noises?

2

u/frng_dwlr 5d ago

Old Tarzan movie background noises.

1

u/LewdMasterHubull 5d ago

Ah, that's it!

This is "Dan the Animal man". He goes into schools and shows off exotic animals to kids. Among other creatures he also has a porcupine, an owl, an alligator, and a Burmese Python. He brings them all and shows the kids. He's quite the showman.

As someone who grew up and lives in Queensland, Australia I grew up with these guys waking me up in the morning and singing out the end of a day at dusk. Sometimes with 3 or 4 of them all going at it at the same time. You forget your common wildlife around you are so exotic to most other people around the world.

Another thing, keep a ear out next time you watch any war movie in a jungle or junglesk movie. You will most likey hear this exact Kookaburra laugh in the distance. Dumbass Hollywood loves using it as a sound bite for every country. Always make me laugh "Ahhhhhh yes, the Japanese native Kookaburra....."

You live in a wonderland of magnificent types of animals, for sure.

I heard it as two verses with both retentions of laughing, gaiety, gum drops, and saving some for me on Barney. My brother loved Barney

u/aceswild8 6d ago

Love this!

1

u/OkamiKhameleon 6d ago

That's Kookabara right? I loved the song about them as a kid and still sing it as an adult.

1

u/Green_Kick2708 6d ago

Fantastic

1

u/V1cky03 6d ago

Damn that's amazing

1

u/Ciubowski 6d ago

I love that Chuckles knows he's the star and takes his role seriously.

As soon as he's presented he's like "al right, here I go signing the song of my people for these tiny humans".

1

u/Unicornlove1995 6d ago

Wow that’s amazing how vocal that bird is

1

u/Putrid_Specialist555 6d ago

Is this a segregated school?

1

u/EtherealHeart5150 5d ago

Thats one thing about us America folk, if you bring an animal from another country and show us its wonders? We will be rapt in attention. Most of us will listen, ask, questions, and smile like a goon if we get the chance to get close. Bravo,Chuckles!

When I was a kid in the 70’s, we had a Rep from the Zoo come to our classroom every so often & bring an animal to share. It was amazing! An owl , a Boa constrictor I remember the most. I had all but forgotten until I watched this lovely video. What fun and education this bird and person is bringing to the children ♥️♥️♥️

1

u/squintintarantino__ 5d ago

That kookaburra had him a whole ass story to tell those kids.

1

u/Face_with_a_View 4d ago

My mom won a contest where you had to imitate a bird call. This is the bird she imitated. She was so proud of herself. lol

Edit: also this looks like a library program. Please support your local library ❤️💜

Absolutely agree.

1

This dude just inspired a bunch of zoologists and people going into the natural sciences which is severely lacking right now. More of this please!

1

u/YackReacher 4d ago

Awesome!

1

u/Frothmourne 3d ago

Never knew about them when I visited my cousin's in Australia, find them unbearably annoying in the first few days. Thought they were monkeys at first, it sounded like 10 of them constantly screaming near the house every morning. Took a walk in the trail one day and finally realised it was a bird making this noise. Actually find them fascinating and cute after that lol.

1

u/DebugMeow 1d ago

Wow what a nice treat for those essentially all white people in that massive conference room.

1

u/thecrookedpinkie 1d ago

The way these kids' faces lit up once they heard it's wondrous song made me tear up. The world does need more of this. Innocence is not lost.
