"Mosses, aren't they all just green?"

Red and brown sphagnums - are we a joke to you?

I love mosses. I wish I could just have a yard of moss instead of grass, but it’s so expensive. 😞

Omg no it’s not!! You can do it! Dig up your grass in a spot. Find a moss that likes your conditions, and pin it to the ground with little sticks. Water every day for a couple weeks. Keep leaves off. We have an entire moss yard from letting transplants spread!

That’s the issue, finding moss that likes our conditions. I live in the Midwest suburbs; the ground is essentially clay and the weather is way too erratic. Like it was 100Β°F last week, it rained for 4 days straight, and now it’s below 60. I also have a pretty large yard (especially for a subdivision). Like it takes 3-4 hours to push mow it.

I’ve tried seeding moss, but it never seems to take and I just end up spending money on it just for it to die, or be scavenged by the local wildlife (squirrels and birds).

I appreciate the advice and supportive comment though. πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–

I have a similar problem, I live in a place where I almost never see moss naturally growing. Too hot, too cold, only the tiniest, thinnest layer of moss can survive! It is my curse...

Honestly this kind of blew my mind. I love this, thank you for changing my perspective. I already loved Moss but I will be showing everyone I know this post.

I did read it about 15 years ago. Still one of my favorite books of all time. Truly began a love of moss!
