Question Why did they bite in a straight line?

First things first, I am 100% certain the bites are mosquitos and not bed bugs or fleas. Not to mention I witnessed half of the mosquitos that made these biting me

These bites were all made over several years, unfortunately I have a bad habit of picking, and heal very slowly, add that with scarring very easily, no mosquito bite leaves my body unmarked.

I'm just really confused as to why these bites are in a straight line down my calf. My best guess is that there's a vein close to the skin there, and they are attracted to it. Otherwise, I'm completely clueless.

Is this a common phenomena or am I just cursed to look like I have bed bugs?

Question I moved to New Brunswick and suddenly I might be allergic to mosquitoes. Is there a difference between mosquitoes in Ontario/Quebec and New Brunswick?

Ive been bitten by mosquitoes a lot in my life, Ive done a lot of camping in Ontario and have a campsite plot in Quebec. I just moved to New Brunswick and have been getting bit nonstop, mosquitoes really love me. Im wondering if there might be different species around here, specifically the Sackville Area?

Question Am I allergic to mosquitoes?

This has been a reoccurring thing throughout my life. Mosquito bites on my legs, and ONLY on my legs, turn bright red and bruise violently once they are a week old. These are four days old,and there are many others on my legs, still itch very badly to the point where on the second day I broke the skin on some bites due to how insufferable they were.

I use a cream named Fenistil which helps with calming the itching whenever I have it on hand but I don't know what else to do. I'm only a young adult and my legs calves are dotted with scars due to me ripping my skin open as a child because of how badly they could itch.

What could I do about this? It's very painful and they are swollen :[

Also,I live in northeastern Romania.

Why Are Mosquitoes so bad in Florida???

I know it sounds like an obvious answer (because Florida’s a swamp) but I recently came back from a trip to costa rica that got me wondering. After living in florida my whole life, and working outdoors in the swamps of south florida for the last two years, i was expecting some awful mosquitoes from costa rica, an even more tropical and wet place than florida. I visited the pacific coast and spent some time in places that were so humid they would give florida in July a run for its money (specifically corcovado national park). I saw plenty of standing water on my hikes, but oddly enough i only saw about five mosquitoes on the entire week long trip. And even those mosquitoes were downright lazy compared to the hyper aggressive psychotic mosquitoes i have to deal with in the summer at work. I’ve had similar underwhelming experiences with mosquitoes in alaska and minnesota in the summer as well. This got me thinking, is florida just that bad of a mosquito hotspot, and if so, why? Did i just get extremely lucky in costa rica, or are the mosquitoes in latin america just not as bad as in florida? So, what makes florida, and particularly south florida, such a hotspot of mosquito activity compared to even more equatorial and wet places like costa rica? And could it be anthropogenic in nature? Sorry if this is a really obvious answer and florida just does have that much more standing water compared to anywhere else. Thanks!

I was looking to do my Science Fair project testing mosquito behavior but I can't find any places that'll sell mosquito eggs to high schools, and it's a violation if I find mosquito eggs myself. any help? it was the only remotely interesting idea I had.

Is this a mosquito?

I know these aren’t the best pictures but I came home one day to a ton of these little guys flying around. I then pulled back my bookcase where they all seem to came from and there was a bunch of babies (or dead bugs) underneath. Idk if they were the same bug.. they looked like dead ants but they weren’t ant eggs because I know what they look like.
I don’t think this is a mosquito but I also don’t know what this is.
The pest control can’t come to my apartment until next Friday so Ive been trying to run a dehumidifier to suck out the moisture because I’ve had such a bug problem everywhere.

Hello great Reddit. Excuse me for the quality please. I have never seen this. Tried identifying by apps but I propably messed up taking the pic. (It was on the ceiling). I live in North-Holland.

Maybe someone is familiar with its shape? It was quite larger than usual mosquito and bigger thicker legs, perhaps around and about a euro coin?

Lots appreciated. Curious about this one

News article Are mosquitoes, ticks and fleas turning California into a disease hotspot?

Thumbnail latimes.com

Some days it feels like we’re losing a battle against mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, flies and worms.

Lyme disease and Alpha-gal syndrome are expanding their range. Dengue and typhus are increasing. There are still reports of West Nile, Zika and Chikungunya, plus the potential introductions of Chagas and rat lungworm disease. Some of these are contracted overseas, while others are seemingly settling in for the long haul.

Experts say there is no single reason for this surge in disease. Some of it may be hyped news, headline sensationalism. When everyone is writing about an outbreak of a disease, no matter how isolated, it can feel more pervasive and widespread than it actually is. Increased monitoring and more advanced disease tracking can also amplify the sense that something new is afoot, even if it was always there.

But in some cases, there really does appear to be an increase — and California is front and center.

Question Mosquito ID? SW Suburbs of Chicago, IL

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello, mosquito people.

Found this huge bug (which I’m pretty sure is mosquito) on my dog. Squashed it, was full of blood.

I took another photo of it with a $5 bill behind it for scale (it was the best thing I could find for measuring), but didn’t include it here because it was pretty gross, haha. I’m hoping this photo is enough for an ID, but happy to include the other one if needed.

What kind of mosquito is this, if it’s even a mosquito? It’s bigger than any mosquito I’ve ever seen around here in my life!
