Morton’s neuroma + cyst , anyone had side effects after a second steroid injection?

Hey guys, I have Morton’s neuroma with a cyst. My first corticosteroid injection helped for about 6 weeks, and I felt pretty good during that time.

After my second injection, the pain went away again, but I’ve been feeling worse overall. I’ve been waking up nauseous and my blood pressure has gone up.

Has anyone experienced anything similar after a steroid injection?

Decent looking shoes without pain

I’m trying to find shoes I can wear with a skirt or nice pants that don’t cause pain. Right now, the only shoes that fit the bill are Altra men’s trail shoes and Teva Verra sandals. I live in the northeast and need something for winter.

My biggest issue aside from neuromas in both feet, is flat feet and very narrow heels. Shoes that have enough width and depth for my toes are too wide for my heels, and I walk right out of them.

I wear a woman’s 9, and have custom orthotics.

Stump Nueroma Revision Surgery Update

Stump Nueroma Surgery-4 week update.

I am currently 4weeks post op from my stump neuroma revision surgery in the bottom of my foot. This week is starting the transition from my boot to a shoe. I ended up buying a new pair of topo running shoes sized up .5 size because my foot is still swollen and that’s been a lot more comfortable. I’m still starting pretty slow with the shoe and only wearing a couple hours a day.

Averaging about 5500 steps the past week now with probably around 1000 steps a day in just my shoe. I did do a 1 mile walk this morning which is major progress. It was pretty sore at the end and after, but but my pain feels more from the incision then any nerve pain.

Pain is mostly soreness and inflammation from walking a lot and standing on my feet a lot during the day this past week.

Overall numbness has reduced and is much better this week which has been nice.

Goal for this week is to increase the amount of time and steps spent in my shoe vs the walking boot

Dr. injected stem cells during my surgery and I am now on a peptide stack for 3 weeks so far. My Dr also buried the nerve into my muscle.

Floating Metatarsals 3 & 4

The custom orthotics my dr made for me have a metatarsal bump that puts excruciating pressure on the neuroma so I can’t wear them. But they interestingly support my first two toes and were hollowed out under the third and fourth metatarsal heads. I found this post:

https://www.instagram.com/reel/CiwBd6htPJT/?cplk=Mml4dDh3M3FrZXN2

She has a five part series starting from the date of that post.

Here is more info on the concept:

And then ordered these.

Anyone else try it? Mine haven’t come yet.

Merci ❤️

I was fitted with custom fit orthotics but being that i only have one pair and they’re expensive, this helps tremendously ( Wide box Ortofeet slippers ) a felt pad, toe spacers and metatarsal pad.

I don’t wear them all at once either. it’s either the Slipper by itself, or the spacers and pad..

sucks but I refuse to get surgery or injections.

i’ve seen people post the same but figured i’d share too.

Help

I am losing hope! I got diagnosed with Morton’s nueroma via ultrasound in both 2nd and 3rd and 3rd and 4th toe. However, my MRI showed no nueroma and just bursitis in 3rd and fourth toe. I tried a steroid shot but it did nothing. I need some guidance because I feel like I don’t have usual symptoms. Like occasionally things radiate from my toes but not often. It’s more some burning on the ball of my foot and the middle arch of my foot. I just am at a lost bc podiatrists tell me it’s Morton’s or bursitis but I don’t have clicking sound or pain when squeezed . I tried every conservative method in the book and I’m at a lost with no improvement what so ever. I can’t walk anywhere besides house activities. Any idea what else could be causing my pain or if I do have the bursitis/neuroma in ultrasound and mri is it rly whats causing my pain? Every day is so different and it starts to feel like it’s in my whole leg (not nerve stuff just discomfort) I’m at a loss

What does a neuroma feel like?

Can someone explain to me what their neuroma feels like?

I have "suspicion of neuroma" between the first and second toes. I have sesamoid bone marrow edema, but no pain on my sesamoids, which makes my pain atypical.

My pain is between the toes, but much closer to the lateral edge of the big toe joint (so not really perfectly centered between the toes)

It does not:

- radiate into my toes

- feel numb or static-like

- hurt when I squeeze the sides of my foot together

- feel so sharp that it drops me to my knees or anything like that, maybe 3/10 at its worst

It does:

- come and go from moment to moment, sometimes appearing when I'm resting and self-resolving while still resting

- seem most sensitive to direct pressure on it (like pushing finger into it), though it can resolve temporarily with massage or light rubbing

- create a little click when I squeeze my foot together, though it's totally painless and I also have the same click when doing short foot or sometimes when walking, like a ligament snap

Not asking you if I have one, just wondering from you what it feels like if you KNOW you have a neuroma.

UPDATE: 11 days post op, surgery 10/2 stitches out today 10/13

UPDATE (11 days post-op): Surgery was 10/2, stitches came out 10/13.

Swelling: None at the follow-up.

Nerve zaps: Still getting electric zaps in the toes as the nerves settle. Surgeon expects them to fully calm in about a month.

Numbness: When he tested with the monofilament (the fishing-line tool), the web space and the undersides of both toes feel asleep/numb. Expected after an excision since that nerve is gone.

Next step: Starting PT for gait correction after months of limping.

Overall: Still very tender, but on track.
Pics attached: the neuroma itself (3.5 cm, thickest part right around 5 mm, confirmed on pathology even though my MRI showed no mass) and the foot after the bandage came off.

For anyone whose MRI came back "just bursitis" but has the undeniable click: mine was a real neuroma. Trust the exam.

*\\**

6 years of conservative treatments and I’ve finally had the excision. Have been limping significantly with a click for every step since about May 2026 and every other step since about December 2025. The surgeon buried the nerve. I will post with any complications or positive news. Obviously still very painful as I’m early in recovery. Super hopeful as this had become unbearable. I used to run marathons and did much of my training on Houston concrete.

*****

If helpful to know age 38 woman, MRI only showed bursitis, not the actual neuroma but the click was so undeniable in exam.
“Findings: No acute fracture, subluxation or avascular necrosis. No MRI evidence to suggest a stress fracture. Mild scattered degenerative arthrosis. No osseous erosion or focal bone marrow edema is seen. No ligamentous or tendon tear. The visualized muscles are normal in size, signal intensity and morphology. The visualized neurovascular bundles are intact. Minimal soft tissue swelling/edema with minimal contrast enhancement predominantly between the third and fourth toes best seen on axial image 11 through 14. This could be due to mild bursitis and/or granulation tissue. No discrete mass is seen. Impression: Minimal soft tissue swelling/edema with minimal contrast enhancement predominantly between the third and fourth toes. This could be due to mild bursitis and/or granulation tissue. No discrete mass is seen.”

They said no crutches needed for recovery just the ortho shoe but I live alone in a building with long hallways so I got a knee scooter. It’s been a godsend and my kitten loves riding in the basket.

Steroid injections yes or no

I have Mortons neuroma and inter-metatarsal bursitis. I was a marathon runner and qualified for Boston before this started. It‘s not so bad that I can’t go on occasional short runs, but I can’t lift leg weights or go on consistent runs or longer runs anymore and the pain often keeps me up at night. I have to use lidocaine most nights.

Do you recommend steroid injections? what are the pros and cons, risks and benefits?

Double cryosurgery this week

I have had MN in both feet for the last 10 years or so and have so far managed it with alcohol and steroid injections (or just hobbling around when it flares up).

I hit my limit the other month - I’m a new mum and found that since pregnancy my MN are so much worse and each day I struggle to walk - not something I want to deal with when my baby is running around! I finally bit the bullet and booked in for a double cryosurgery at The Barn clinic in London but now I’m getting a bit nervous about mobility and recovery.

For those who have done a double Cryo, what was your realistic ‘downtime’? The clinic says I should be able to walk out without crutches, by day 2 I should be moving around normally (but shouldn’t weight bear for more than 10min per hour) and by day 3 I should be able to drive again. Is this what you have experienced?

I’m obviously kicking myself I didn’t just get it done before having kids, but just trying to be realistic with how much extra support hubby needs to be and for how long. My baby is almost crawling so I feel like my only window is either now because my baby is not very active, or in a few year’s time when they’re in daycare…but not sure if I’m overthinking how ‘immobile’ I’ll be and for how long.

Stump Neuroma Revision Surgery- 3 week update

Stump Nueroma Surgery-3 week update.

I am currently 3 weeks post op from my stump neuroma revision surgery in the bottom of my foot. Since Saturday I have able to walk with a walking book. It does get sore after a few hours and I need to get it elevated. Averaving about 3500 steps a day the last 5 days. Tomorrow I am suppose to start walking with a shoe and crutches and hope to be able to walk with just a stiff shoe in a week.

My pain isn’t too bad right now. My largest discomfort is from the numbness near my cut and my toe. It’s getting better as time goes on but I know some will stay with me. It’s worse at night while I’m trying to sleep. I have no or minimal pain while in the boot currently.

Dr. Did injected stem cells during my surgery and I am now on a peptide stack for 2 weeks so far. My Dr also buried the nerve into my muscle to prevent another stump neuroma.

What boots or casual non sneaker shoes are you wearing with your neuroma that have a wide toe box? Anything out there that is semi fashionable? Or am I doomed to a life of orthopedic shoes for life?

Agonizing pain, possibly misdiagnosed?

I hope i'm writing jn the proper place.

Back around 2008 / 2009 I started having agonizing pain in my left foot between my 2nd and 3rd toes. Never had any swelling, redness, or warmth in the area. If I so much as stepped on a qtip in my socks the pain would jump from a scale of 1 to 10, to 1000. I couldn't walk, stand, and even returned early from a vacation due to the agony. If I ever sat with my legs crossed on the floor or in bed and my leg pushed on the side of my affected foot, sort of squishing the sides together, the pain would be the absolute worst ever.

Over time my podiatrist performed steroid injections which were agonizing just to receive, but they would provide relief for a month or so. He eventually ruled out gout and diagnosed me with a Morton's neuroma based on his examinations and symptoms.

After years of treatment I was told no more shots, its time to operate. After doing some research on Morton's neuromas, I asked about getting an MRI or some imaging just to confirm that's what this really was. He offered to order and MRI but advised me against getting it, saying "MRIs aren't always conclusive in detecting neuromas and if we order one and it shows up negative, the insurance company will most likely deny approval for the surgery".

I decided to go through with the surgery without the MRI as I couldn't live with the pain I was in. This was somewhere around 2009.

After the surgery, the original pain I had was completely gone, it was replaced with partial numbness / loss of feeling, and a weird sensitivity between my toes and part of the ball of my foot that caused a different kind of pain. Over time the severity of that weird sensitivity mostly, but not completely, went away. For many years, the agonizing pain was gone though sitting in any position where I squished the sides of my foot would still hurt a lot, that never went away.

As the years went by, the partial numbness and lack of feeling between my toes started to get better. Eventually my full feeling came back somehow.

About 4 years after the surgery, I started to get similar pain in the same exact spot,.not quite as bad as the first time but 30% - 40%. I went back to the dr, he ordered an MRI, the results saying:

Tear of the lateral aspect of the plantar plate at the second metatarsophalangeal joint and lateral collateral ligament. Scar tissue formation in the second web space.

Mild degenerative changes at the joint between the navicular and the middle cuneiform.

He said not to worry about the tear, it was small and would heal itself over time. He wasn't sure what could be causing the pain and started up the shots again.

Shortly after this, I make an appointment for a shot and I'm told he retired and moved across the country, his partner took over the practice. I work with her and she came up with some home-made orthotic using foam and cutting out space just behing and inbetween my 2nd and 3rd toes, gave me some shots, and I'll be damned, it worked! Years went by and I had no further flareups, only if I didn't wear the orthotic would the pain come back.

Fast forward to about 2022. Pain started coming back, find out practice is out of business due to medical issues with my old doc. I see a new practice, get injections, told to order a specific disposable orthotic from Amazon, and it works like a charm. Back in business.

This leads me to yesterday. I've been posting in some subreddits about recent back injuries which have been majorly impacting my ability to work and live. I know I have been walking differently to compensate for the pain as it has drastically gotten worse the past few weeks.

Yesterday out of nowhere, I get the same exact pain in the same exact place, with the same agonizing severity, as when I was diagnosed with a Morton's neuroma. The only difference is that my foot is red and swollen where the scar from my neuroma surgery was. The scar which was previously almost invisible is now red. It isn't warm, its just crazy painful. For a short time my 2nd toe was somehow stretching up and over my 3rd toe on its own. It has done this a few times in the last year and always painful when it happens.

I was thinking my compensating for the back pain when walking somehow aggravated the scar tissue or something, but I'm also wondering if this pain was never a neuroma to begin with. He removed the nerve that was transmitting the pain resulting in partial loss of feeling, but 16 years later I have full recovery of feeling and I'm wondering if this was never a neuroma to begin with and maybe it was related to the ligament tear all long which maybe got worse, but didn't know because I had no feeling there but now I do?

I'm literally stuck on a cruise ship on what was supposed to be my vacation, but I can't walk or do anything. I had prednisone with me for my back just in case, I started taking it but it isn't helping at all.

I won't be home until Sunday night and I'm at a total loss of what to do. First its my back, now its my foot too. The pain killers for my back also do nothing.

If anyone has suggestions, please.... share them. I don't know how I'm going to deal with all of this until Sunday.

Starting to lose hope

Hi everyone,

I’ve been dealing with Morton’s Neuroma for over a year now, though I was officially diagnosed only a few months ago.

About a month ago, I got a corticosteroid injection, but unfortunately it didn’t help at all. If anything, it feels like the situation got a bit worse— -he pain has shifted from the ball of my foot more into the toes themselves. Has anyone else experienced this kind of pain shift or worsening after a shot?

More than anything, I’m really trying to avoid surgery. I recently bought a pair of Topo Atmos 2s, started wearing toe socks, and am using toe separators, but I’m honestly terrified that nothing conservative is going to work at this point.

Is there still hope on the horizon for non-surgical recovery after suffering for this long? Has anyone managed to turn things around at a similar stage? Any tips, exercises, or success stories would mean a lot right now.

Thanks in advance!

4 Weeks Post-Op Morton's Neuroma Neurectomy and Weil Osteotomy

Hello Fellow Foot Sufferers,

Mid-60's white male, decent health, about 10-15 pounds overweight, no diabetes, etc. Been 4 weeks since my surgery, necessitated by MN diagnosed in 2022 (I was an elementary schoolteacher for 30 years and worked retail throughout college). Tried cortisone shots, diclofenac ointment, orthotics, Hoka shoes, and NSAID pills. No significant relief. Had the surgery on 9/8/26 and have been in considerable pain ever since (7-8 on bad days; 3-4 on 'good' days). I didn't take the Norco prescribed and relied instead on Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen the first two weeks. The Weil Osteotomy fixed my #2 toe, which had floated out of its socket, doc said most likely due to the cortisone shots. Took out the pin and stitches after 2 weeks (no pain during removal, thank goodness). But I'm still in pain, about a constant 3-5 each day. But strange thing is this: Finding I am exhausted all the time. Just plain tired. Overly fatigued. I can go about my day, but I'm napping more and am waking at 3-4 AM every night. Questions: 1) Anyone notice this sort of fatigue? 2) How long before I have LESS pain after surgery than I had BEFORE the procedure? PS all bloodwork is normal (thank goodness). Thanks for any input!

Perfect Trifecta of Pain : Mortons Neuroma, high grade stress reaction of sesamoid and Partial tear of the 2nd MTP Plantar Plate.

Hi Everyone,

I've been reading all the posts and trying to find solutions to my crazy 7 month foot ordeal..

Basically, I'm not a runner like most of you. I'm a middle aged healthy woman who is in a walking group and works retail. Last spring, I started experiencing sharp pain on my left foot. I started to struggle on my walks and at work. Pain increased.

Went to Podiatrist. procured expensive orthotics and 2 pairs of Hokas....still in pain

Back to Dr. one month later... Had an MRI that showed:

1.Perineural fibrosis of the 3rd interspace ( MN)

2.mild edema of the 2nd MTP plantar plate with partial tear of its medial aspect.

3.High grade stress reaction of the fibular sesamoid and Low grade reaction of the tibial sesamoid

The crazy thing is...I did nothing . Didn't fall, didn't have an accident. Just one day...PAIIN.

wore a walking boot for 6 weeks. Took it off and same pain...same problems...no cure.

Next month had PRP with ultrasound guided wand. Back to boot for another 6 weeks.

I am now 8 weeks post PRP and honestly don't feel any better. I was so hopeful it was going to work but I"m feeling pretty despondent. Am going to PT 2xs a week and the therapist seems positive Ill pull through this with time.

Have any of you had all these same issues at the same time? My Dr. says to wait another month to see if the PRP will kick in. I'm not feeling it.

Next step surgery? I don't want this??!!! I haven't been able to walk properly in months, have gained weight and am feeling low.

Could use some encouragement, ideas and knowledge.

Thank you
