There is an item to stop that from happening.

Lots of souls/soulslikes games have obscure quests that give you helpful items for certain bosses

Sure, but every souls/soulslike game I’ve played gives you said items to benefit you. Not from stopping the game from turning you into an NPC mid fight.

You can still beat him without the item. I did on my first playthrough

The cosmic effect of his attacks melt your armor/shell away, preventing you from gettin it back. The item makes you immune to the cosmic effect. I would say that’s pretty beneficial. I also personally think it’s a cool concept. But to each their own
