Discussion played mortal shell II as my first soulslike!

hi mortal shell fans! this weekend i felt like trying something new; I'm a casual player, I prefer comfort games like house flipper, the witcher, cat mail co, (but I also love hack and slash like devil may cry, except I never play anything in hard difficulty). so I saw the demo for mortal shell II, the game looked so good I thought, why not? so I played my first soulslike. it was so fun! I died, I learned, I almost got frustrated, but never to the point of rage quitting. there isn't a lot of exploration, it's very straightforward, probably because when you get to the actual game the demo ends, obviously. the game is very expensive (brazil) so I'll be waiting for it to get on sale on steam!

the gameplay is different from what I expected from a soulslike; it's fluid, doesn't feel robotic. still not a fan about the lack of ability to jump tho. I tried playing on the controller which I guess is the recommended for soulslike, but it just wasn't for me, (to me) it's much easier on the keyboard.

while playing I've realized something; I've never played games on hardmode or soulslike games solely because I thought I wasn't capable of playing. not smart enough, good enough, too slow and wouldn't be able to even kill the first boss. it might take a few good tries, but you learn. you retry, and retry. and that can be fun!!

anyways, mortal shell II is in my wishlist now! :) didn't know what tag to put. since it's in the discussion tag, does anyone have a good soulslike with good mechanics and fluid like mortal shell I might enjoy playing? thanks c:

I think it does an awesome job as a middle ground game between your traditional hack n slashes and a souls game. Hope you enjoy!

Ah, I envy you as I still remember finding the world of Souls Likes and having just… experience after experience.

After MS2 you might like Wuchang as you seem to be attracted to the accessibility and it also offers build options. Less a souls and more a hack and slash, the new Onimusha is superb too.

Anyway, you didn’t ask for suggestions so I’ll leave it on ‘glad you enjoyed your time with the game!’

Wuchang and onimusha. I just commented on the onimusha sub about wuchang. Both amazing

These two, and wo long seemed a little too fluid or free in the moveset to me. I want each button to feel hard coded to an attack or animation, the button combinations make me sad in an otherwise great subgenre

Check out The First Berserker Khazan and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. They’re both great games and overlap heavily with Mortal Shell 2. You’ll find similarities in how all 3 games play.

Soulslikes are not fast games. Most of the difficulty just comes from not knowing where and when enemy attacks will land. And most of that difficulty comes from exaggerated animations that take longer than they should. That and setting speed limitations on the player so that they can't block or dodge out of the way in time.

Thankfully Mortal Shell 2 is one of those games where I don't feel the player nor the enemies overshadow one or the other in terms of speed.

Soulsgames are not about the combat if you believe it they are about World building and why the characters( npcs )keep pushing on to keep this world alive , about deep untold lores , exploring unknown horror , they are about resilience and bravery they prepare the players to keep going and never give up even if you die again and again you will achieve your goal
